Gems in Diablo 4 are socketable upgrade items. Diablo 4 Gems can be inserted into Weapons, Armor, and Jewelry to add different bonuses depending on the equipment slot. In Lord of Hatred, Gems become a much more important part of character building because weapon sockets now grant multiplicative damage bonuses tied to specific damage types. Gems are handled through The Jeweler, where players can craft higher-quality Gems from Gem Fragments, add sockets to eligible equipment, remove socketed Gems, and manage socket interactions with Runes. Each D4 Gem family keeps a distinct identity: weapon sockets are used for damage scaling, armor sockets add defensive or attribute bonuses, and jewelry sockets improve resistances.
Diablo 4 Gems Comprehensive Guide
How Gems work in Diablo 4 Lord of Hatred
Lord of Hatred changes Gems from minor support bonuses into a core gear optimization system. Each Gem family now supports a specific damage type when placed in a weapon. Builds that focus on a single damage type can use matching Gems to reinforce that damage profile, while Diamond remains the broad option for builds that need an all-damage multiplier instead of a single-element bonus.
- Amethyst Shadow damage.
- Diamond All Damage.
- Emerald Poison damage.
- Ruby Fire and Holy damage.
- Sapphire Cold damage.
- Skull Physical damage.
- Topaz Lightning damage.

Jewelry bonuses also become more important in Lord of Hatred because Gems provide larger resistance values. The Horadric Cube can also amalgamate Gems, giving players another Gem-focused crafting route alongside the Jeweler.
Diablo 4 LoH Gem Families and Socket Roles
Gems change their effect based on where they are inserted. Weapon sockets are the main offensive choice in Lord of Hatred, armor sockets provide attribute or survivability bonuses, and jewelry sockets are used to solve resistance needs.

Horadric and Flawless Horadric Gems in Diablo 4 Lord of Hatred - NEW!
Horadric Gems and Flawless Horadric Gems are the highest Gem tiers in Diablo 4 introduced with the Lord of Hatred DLC. They are endgame socketable items created through the Horadric Cube, using the Amalgamation recipe. These Gems are stronger than Grand Gems and are mainly used to push late-game damage, core stats, and resistances.
Their strongest use is in weapon sockets, where they provide major damage multipliers. Flawless Horadric Gems are expensive to make, so players should prioritize the Gem that best matches their build’s main damage type before investing in secondary sockets.

Horadric and Flawless Horadric Gems are not crafted directly at the Jeweler. Players must first obtain Grand Gems, then upgrade them through the Horadric Cube.

All Grand Gems in Diablo 4 Lord of Hatred
The following table lists the Grand Gem bonuses for each Gem type in Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred. The largest change is that Gems socketed into weapons now provide multiplicative damage bonuses. This means weapon Gems scale with the rest of a build instead of acting as small additive stats. Weapon bonuses use the new multiplicative damage format.

How to Craft Gems in Diablo 4
Gem crafting is performed at the Jeweler. Players unlock the Jeweler through the priority quest that introduces Kratia in Kyovashad. Once the Jeweler is available, Gem Fragments and gold can be used to craft higher-quality Gems. Gem Fragments are obtained as drops while playing, including from enemies, world content, and reward caches. Higher-quality Gems require more Fragmetns, with Grand Gems also requiring Forgotten Souls.
IMPORTANT: Unlike lower Gem tiers, Horadric and Flawless Horadric Gems are not crafted directly at the Jeweler. Players must first obtain Horadric Gems, then upgrade them through the Horadric Cube.

How to Add Sockets in Diablo 4
D4 Gems can only be inserted into items with sockets. Some items drop with sockets already available, while other eligible items can have sockets added at the Jeweler. Adding a socket to a non-Ancestral item requires basic Crafting Materials, Veiled Crystals, and a legendary salvage material matching the item type. Adding a socket to an Ancestral item uses a Scattered Prism.
Socket limits depend on the equipment slot.

| Cap | 1 |
| Tunic | 2 |
| Pants | 2 |
| Amulet | 1 |
| Ring | 1 |
| 1-Handed Weapon | 1 |

How to Remove and Replace Gems in Diablo 4 Lord of Hatred
Gems can be removed at the Jeweler, but direct replacement is often enough when upgrading to a better Gem or changing a build. Salvaging an item also returns socketed Gems, so it is not necessary to remove Gems before salvaging gear. Gems and Runes interact with the same socket system. A Gem can be replaced directly, and the removed Gem is returned.
If a Gem is inserted into an item that already contains a Runeword or a Rune, the Runes are removed. If a Rune is inserted into an item that contains Gems, the Gems are removed. On two-socket items, inserting a new Gem into a filled item removes the bottom socketed Gem and places the new Gem in the top position.
Best Use of Gems in Lord of Hatred
In Lord of Hatred, weapon Gems should match the main damage type of the build. Shadow builds use Amethyst, Poison builds use Emerald, Fire and Holy builds use Ruby, Cold builds use Sapphire, Physical builds use Skull, and Lightning builds use Topaz. Diamond is the flexible option when a build benefits more from All Damage than from a single damage type.

Armor Gems are chosen for the defensive or attribute bonus they provide, while Jewelry Gems are chosen to patch resistance needs. Because Grand Gems have the strongest bonuses, endgame characters should prioritize upgrading the Gems used in their highest-impact sockets first.
Types of Gems in Diablo 4
In your journey throughout Sanctuary, you will encounter a variety of Gems that can provide different benefits depending on the slot they are socketed into. These benefits range from increased damage for weapons, defensive bonuses for armor, and resistance bonuses for jewelry. By crafting and using Gems effectively, you can greatly enhance your character's capabilities in combat.
