Runes in Diablo 4 are special Items that can be inserted into Weapons and Armor that have sockets on them. Runes are divided into two categories: Ritual Runes and Invocation Runes. When combined, Runes can form "Rune Words" that provide additional effects. Runes can now be crafted using the Horadric Cube found in Temis, Skovos. The cube becomes usable after completing the main campaign of the Lord of Hatred DLC, then the player can walk over to the item to start using it. Rune Crafting requires different materials, but will generally use a fixed amount of runes.

Diablo 4 Runes Guide

Crafting Runes in Lord of Hatred Diablo 4 DLC

The Horadric Cube is returning to Diablo 4, and this tool lets you modify gears, transmute items and materials, and craft runes. The Horadric Cube comes accessible after completing the main campaign of the DLC. Then, once you return to Temis in Skovos, you can find the Horadric Cube to the right of the waypoint.

When it comes to crafting runes with the Horadric Cube, you need to scroll to the bottom of the list to find the Rune Crafting Category. The list includes select Ritual Runes and Invocation Runes. The right hand side of the UI will show all the Materials needed to craft these runes.

Removed Runes in D4 Lord of Hatred

In the Lord of Hatred expansion, Blizzard has removed several runes that were not being used much in the game. This will make the system feel smoother and easier to understand for players. With fewer runes in the game, the setup is now simpler and more clear to use.

Because of this change, all of the remaining runes now fit in the Socketables inventory tab. This makes it easier for players to keep track of them and manage their runes without using stashes.

Smoother Runes Farming in D4 Lord of Hatred

Because of the removed Runes and the smoother Rune system, it is now much easier for players to find what they actually need when farming for Runes. If you are focused on a specific build, you can expect your needed Runes to show up sooner. This helps your farming save more time when you are trying to get the right Runes for your build.

Diablo 4 Vessel of Hatred Runes and the Offering System

Runes in this system operate based on a resource called Offering, which is generated by Runes of Ritual upon meeting specific conditions. Once enough Offering is accumulated, Runes of Invocation consume it to trigger their effects. The more challenging the requirement for the Rune of Ritual, the more Offering it will produce. On the flip side, stronger Runes of Invocation will demand more Offering to activate, creating a balance between the two systems.

The Overflow Mechanic

In some cases, players may generate more Offering than is necessary to activate a Rune of Invocation. When this happens, the Overflow mechanic comes into play. Many Runes of Invocation are designed to benefit from Overflow by applying an additional bonus to their effects, temporarily increasing their power for a short duration. This adds an extra layer of strategy when managing Offering.

Crafting Runewords in Diablo 4 Vessel of Hatred

To create a Runeword, players need to socket both a Rune of Ritual and a Rune of Invocation into an item that has two Sockets. Items such as Chest, Leg, and Two-Handed weapon slots are eligible for Runewords, and now even Helm slots can hold a Runeword thanks to the addition of a new Socket.

Rune Rarities

Any Rune of Ritual can be paired with any Rune of Invocation, offering great flexibility. There are three rarity tiers for Runes—Magic, Rare, and Legendary—and as their rarity increases, so does the strength of their effects, making higher-tier Runes incredibly powerful when paired strategically.

Invocation Runes are the effect part of Runewords. Placed in the bottom socket, they activate once enough Offering from the Ritual Rune are generated. Some can be enhanced by Overflow Effects if extra Offerings are collected, adding to the strategy of pairing them with the right Ritual Rune.

Typical blizzard, they will probably add this as an expansion because its not in the main game. Just like TBC on WoW was ripped out of the launch version and sold as an expansion...

agreed like in diablo 2 getting like cta (call to arms ) for buff skills hp def atk increase it was cool ! and nice to use ... same for the merchants with like might or cold aura and giving them the polearm that made ress - 70* they increased talent and skill and they looked super cool kinda miss it

This system looks very promising, but it would be very good if you can add the rune word system to it. For example you get conditions and effects for 2 runes, but for some combinations of runes you get new unique effect like in Diablo 2
