Masterworking in Diablo 4 is the new End Game crafting system introduced in Loot Reborn. Masterworking allows players to increase the value of existing Affixes through 25 Masterworking ranks. These upgrades are done at The Blacksmith and require special crafting materials acquired from the Nightmare Dungeon called The Pit of the Artificers. Masterworking improves the overall strength of all existing Affixes and every 4th Rank will give a massive 25% boost to a random affix currently equipped. It is ideally done after you have acquired your desired Affixes through Tempering and only works on Ancestral Legendary and Unique Items.

Masterworking General Guide for Diablo 4

What is Masterworking?

Masterworking is an endgame crafting system in Diablo 4 that allows players to improve the Quality of their gear. It can be used by anyone once unlocked via the Blacksmith in any town. Quality, on the other hand, is a stat that boosts an item's base values and affixes by 1%. Additionally, each item can have a maximum cap of 25 Quality, granting your item stats an increase of up to 25%. Masterworking also requires various materials to pull off.

How to Unlock Masterworking?

Masterworking is automatically unlocked after acquiring the base material Obducite. Additionally, unlocking Masterworking will also unlock Tempering at the Blacksmith.  These can be found occasionally in Nightmare Dungeons and Infernal Hordes

How to Masterwork in Diablo 4?

 Diablo 4 Masterwork Materials

Masterworking requires various materials to work with. Each Masterwork or upgrade will cost players Gold, Obducite, Forgotten Souls, and other base materials. The quantity of materials also scales with the current Quality of the item. This means that players will need to acquire loads of Obducites to fully Masterwork an item. When the maximum quality has been reached, an option to reroll is available as a last resort to achieve a Capstone Bonus. The Capstone Bonus will provide a random affix upgrade on the item by upto 50%, which includes Greater Affixes. This will also allow you to re-roll the Masterworked Greater Affix without resetting or losing your Masterworking quality. An Obducite and Neathiron is required if you choose to re-roll your current Masterworked Affix. Neathrions can be obtained from endgame Bosses, Bartuc, Belial, and Astaroth.

The crafting materials required can all be obtained in Nightmare Dungeons, Kurast Undercity, and Infernal Hordes. The materials can be dropped by enemies, chests, and events. Do note that upgrading through Masterworking does not fail. It will, however, increase the required materials rather quickly. Be sure to acquire numerous Obducites before Masterworking to maximize its level.

Masterwork Quality for Diablo 4

Each item can be upgraded up to Quality 25. Each Quality increases the base stats, armor, damage, resistance, and all of their corresponding affix by 1%, which players can maximize up to 25%. Additionally, capping an item to Quality 25 will grant you a large Capstone Bonus. This grants a 50% bonus to any of the affixes you have on that item. Do note that Tempered Affixes can also gain this 50% bonus. Greater Affixes can also be affected, further increasing their bonus.

To further explain, let's take an armor with a base armor of 1,000, for example. Upgrading the armor's quality by 1 increases its base stats by 1%, thus giving us 1,010 base armor. Upgrading it to Quality 25 will grant us a total of 1,250 armor.

Masterwork Rerolling: How Does It Work in Diablo 4?

Once you acquire the Capstone bonus for that item, 1 random affix will be increased by 50%. This is random and cannot be chosen by players; there is, however, a chance to reroll that specific capstone bonus. Do note that rerolling the capstone bonus will not refund all of the spent resources from before.

To reroll, players can click on the reroll button right next to the item to be Masterworked. Additionally, rerolling will also change the required materials. Players will now have to spend Neathrion instead of Forgotten Souls.
