Methods of Applied Force is a Faction Quest in The Outer Worlds 2. The Faction Quest Methods of Applied Force is a Major Faction quest related to the Order of the Ascendant Faction. To complete this quest, players need to find a way to capture Spireton and reclaim control of the Archive to obtain the Calcaduceus and give it to the Order while dealing with Protectorate forces.

 

The Presiding Bishop has offered to help you gain access to the Archive to analyze your rift data if you can get her troops inside and reclaim the Archive for the Order.

How to Start Methods of Applied Force in The Outer Worlds 2

The Faction Quest Methods of Applied Force can be picked up while progressing the Faction Quest An Equitable Arrangement. After you have successfuly improved your standing with the Order of the Ascendant and helping Artificer Laureate Enola Kraft, you will be able to speak to Presiding Bishop Ruth Basar in Laplace's Garden on Cloister.

Go through the door after climbing the main staircase. You will be greeted by the head of the Order of the Ascendant, Ruth Basar. She will formally introduce herself. As the conversation progresses, she will mention noticing secret communications happening between Laplace's Garden and the ACS Undisputed Claim and you will be presented with the following options to choose from.

• I'm working with Gertie and Alden to negotiate a truce between you and Auntie.
• Vicar Levin has expressed the desire to resume negotiations. I think he's right.
• Your delegate wants the Order and Auntie's Choice to make peace. I think that's a mistake.

To side with the Order, choose option 3 and tell Ruth that you think working with Auntie's Choice is a mistake. She will agree and tell you that the risks of a negative outcome from the negotiations are too great. She will inform you that she will speak with Levin and tell him to cease all communication with the Undisputed Claim and that the Order does not need the help of a corporation to win the war.

 

 

She will move on and tell you that The Archive is an important matter that is at the forefront of her mind.

• You're right. I've acquired rift data that I believe may be key to saving Arcadia.
• Why is the Archive at the forefront of your mind?
• That's a big assumption.

She will then ask how you came about to acquiring said rift data and you can either tell her how you obtained it or keep it to yourself.

• I'd rather not say.
• Not easily. I tracked down a former colleague who did not part happily with it.
• Took it off a corpse. I acquire a lot of things that way.

She will point out that you had difficulty with what you had to to get the data.

• I wanted to resolve the situation peacfully, but she forced my hand.
• Yes. If I had the chance to do it all over, I'd make different choices.
• I'm an Earth Directorate agent. I can't let myself be ruled by feelings.
• Not really. De Vries was a traitor. She deserved what she got.

  

Ruth will say sympathize and say that it must have been a difficult choice, but will also mention that difficulty is not a useful metric in judging a decision as right or wrong. She will then ask what you plan to do after you process the rift data.

• I'm hoping the processed data gives me better insight into how to close the rifts.
• I don't know. I'll play it by ear.
• That's for me to know, and you to find out.

Tell her that you plan to use the data to learn how to close down rifts. She will say that the priority should be to retake The Archive and bring it back under the Order's control; until then, the discussion is at pause.

• I take it you already have a plan. That is your Order's whole shtick.
• All right, then. How can I help?
• You were the one who wanted to pry.

 

She will say that the Plan has brought you to deliver The Archive out of the Protectorate's subjugation and back into the Order's hands. She will also tell you that by aligning yourself with the Order, you will be under threat from Auntie's Choice as they will see you as a threat of your own against their own interests. She will ask you to make sure if you are sure you are prepared to face the consequences of making such a decision.

• Yes. I'd rather not make an enemy of Auntie, but I suppose there's no way around it.
• I'm happy to help the Order, Presiding Bishop, so long as the Order is willing to help me.
• I'm here, aren't I? Just get on with it.
• Let me think about it some more first. [Leave Conversation]

She will assure you that the relationship will be mutually beneficial. She will then move on to explain the plan and requirements that need to be met in order to successfuly reclaim The Archive. She will start by pointing out that you must also reclaim Spireton from the enemy. She will explain that Spireton used to serve as the Order's headquarters due to its proximity to The Archive.

She will also inform you that there is a lift in Spireton that can send troops into the Archive to assist you against facing Protectorate forces. You will need to unlock and call the lift, but it can only be done from within the Archive. Because of this, you need to infiltrate the Archive in other ways. One such way is to cross the bridge connected to Newton.

 

You will have already taken care of the cultists in the town by completing A Study in Disruption, which was required to improve your standing with the Order. Ruth, however, will say that you still need to find a way to cross the bridge as there is a small rift blocking the path across.

If you already possess the Rift Anomaly Modulator by completing the Main Quest An Instrument to Unfold Space and Time, you can tell her that you already have a device to deal with it.

You can then ask her what else is needed to complete this plan of her and she will tell you that there is a special computronical key that you will need to find within the Archive called the Calcaduceus. She will tell you that once the Calcaduceus is back in the Order's hands, the Archive will have full control of the Archive and its systems. Let her continue until more dialogue options appear.

• How am I supposed to reclaim Spireton?
• Any other ways you can help me once I"m inside the Archive, beyond additional firepower?
• The Archive will be back in Order hands before you know it. [Leave Conversation]

  

You can exhaust all dialogue options from here to learn more information and ideas to go about reclaiming Spireton and infiltrating the Archive. If you ask Ruth how to reclaim Spireton, she will give you the Spireton Access Override Card. It will allow you to open and enter a discreet side entrance on the western side of Spireton through a broken portion of the outer wall. She will direct you to a terminal that can divert power from the Protectorate's turrets. You will be able to enter the building where the terminal is located by using the same override access card she just gave you.

If you ask her what additional support she can provide outside of firepower, she will initially tell you that she has nothing in her mind that you benefit you but if you have a 7 in Speech you can push the conversation.

• Are you sure? Any help could end up being the difference between success and failure. [Requires Speech 7]
• Too bad. I expect it's goign to be a real challenege down there.
• If you're holding out on me, it's only going to hurt us both.

Using your Speech skill, she will tell you that she has hidden caches around the Archive for emergency use should you need it. She will also give you a passcode to access them. After the conversation ends, Methods of Applied Force will be added to the quest log in your Journal and you can move to completing the next objectives. Note that this will lock you out of progressing through An Equitable Arrangement any further.

 

Capture Spireton (Optional)

After speaking to Presiding Bishop Ruth Basar, make your way Spireton from Laplace's Garden using the fast-travel point. Just outside of the location, you will be able to meet Exemplar Levesque accompanied by Order troops who will assist you in reclaiming the Spireton from the Protectorate forces. Speak to him, after his initial greeting tell him that they need to wait until you've disabled the turrets before they engage.

• Yes, let's go. Time to attack Spireton. [Leave Conversation]
• Wait until I've disabled the turrets. Once that occurs, you're clear to attack. [Leave Conversation]
• Not yet. I need more time to prepare. [Leave Conversation]

  

During our playthrough, we chose to go with option 2 and disable the turrets first before sending Levesque's troops in. He will say that while the change in plan is unanticipated, it is a strategic refinement and will confirm that they will await for the signal, unless the situation deteriorates, they will intervene.

Make your way to the left side of the Spireton before the path that leads up to it and enter through the broken section of the wall. There will be a locked door a little to the left after you enter through the wall. You can unlock it using the Spireton Access Override Card that Ruth Basar gave you.

  

Once you're through to the other side. climb up using the scaffolding and at the top will be more Protectorate forces. Pay attention to your minimap so you can be aware of their locations. Sneak around them to eliminate them discreetly, then you can use Auntie's Acidic Dematerializer to get rid of the corpse.

  

There will also be two cabins on the upper level. One of them you need to unlock using a Mag-Pick and a 17 in Lockpick, the other is left unlocked that you can enter to find a data log outlining the Repositioning Directives in Case of A Predicament written by an Exemplar Lehwalder. You will also be able to find a few more items inside, along with a safe you can lockpick. Around the cabin outside will also be a bunch of ammo and other items you can use along the way as you reclaim Spireton.

 

You can then go back down and continue to sneak past the enemies, and your goal for now is to disable the turrets by the entrance by hiding behind structures, distracting or eliminating nearby enemies with sneak attacks, and then disabling the turrets from a distance while staying hidden by using your Hack skill of 9.

Once you disable one of the turrets, enemies will become alert and you will be more easily detected. You can go back and leave the compound through the broken section of the wall you initially entered through. Then cross the main entrance of the Spireton all the way to the right side and climb the ice formations up to the platform back into the compound.

 

Once you're up on the platform, turn left and enter the building. From broken section of the wall inside, you can then hack the other turret from a safe distance. After a short while, your allies from the Order of the Ascendant will begin their attack on Spireton to assist you in dealing with the Protectorate forces and you can fight the remaining enemies head-on with their help.

  

 

Secure the Archive for the Order

Infiltrate the Archive

 After clearing out Spireton and reclaiming it for the Order if you choose to do the optional objective, your next task is to head to the town of Newton. You can use the fast-travel point to get to Newton if you already have it unlocked. This objective is also related to the Main Quest A Complication with the Computronic Cerebrum. If you set it as your active quest, you can easily follow the marker that appears on the screen to help you navigate towards the location. Refer to the map below for the location.

Once you get to Newton, go through the town and approach the bridge where the small rift anomaly is located, then use the Rift Anomaly Modulator to temporarily close the rift so you can cross the bridge over to The Archive and enter the building to use the elevator to go down.

 

 

 

Activate the Spireton Lift

After going down to the Archive, you will need to complete the Task The Starving Remainder. This will allow you to obtain the Spireton Lift Control Components from Auxiliary Dabbler Hoyt Schermerhorn, which is necessary to complete this objective. You then need to activate the Spireton lift from the control panel using the Spireton Lift Control Components you received from Auxiliary Dabbler Hoyt Schermerhorn. Then, call in the reinforcements from the Order by calling the Spireton Lift. On the bridge will be several Protectorate forces that you will need to get rid of with the help of your allies.

  

 

Obtain the Calcaduceus

Once you have killed all the enemies on the bridge, you will then need to continue progressing the main quest, A Complication with the Computronic Cerebrum. Make your way inside the Central Interface building. You will then hear a voice saying that the Calcaduceus is not detected if you approach the door. To your left, Assessor Torbert Ostergard will come out of a room and he will be visibly sick. Speak to him and you will be presented with the following choices:

•  Er... Hate to interrupt. Have a moment?
• Pull it together. You're going to help me get into the Archive.
• Void damn. Are you alright?!
• Protectorate scum! Surrender now or face the consequences.
• [Requires Medical 9]

He will explain that he's been irregularly indisposed. You will get more dialogue choices from there and you can ask him who he is. He will tell you that he is the Archive's current Operator, and the bearer of the Calcaduceus, the item you need in order to get through the door.

• Give me the Calcaduceus or else.
• Shouldn't you be in the Archive?
• What the **** is a Calcaduceus?!

  

With option 2, he will explain that the reason for his absence from within the Archive is because of the latest batch of Crabble rations, and—like many of the others—it did not agree with his body, and the closest place of relief was outside the secure door. He will tell you that he will gladly give you the Calcaduceus as long as you grant him safe passage, and once you have it, the machine will recognize you as its Operator.

• You can't leave. I may need your help with the Archive.
• Really? Seems like you'd be more concerned about facing punishment from the Protectorate.
• Sounds like a deal to me.
• Wait. You said others here fell ill, as well?
• I'll take it off of your corpse. [Leave Conversation]

Choosing option 3, he will continue to explain that the last batch of Crabble rations delivered had caused a widespread ailment to those who had taken it, and some who had fallen ill died. He will then ask to leave to seek out a Protectorate Curativist to help him. Once the conversation ends, you will receive the Calcaduceus and he will begin to walk away before he too, dies. You will be able to loot his body and obtain Breath of the Sovereign Silver, Fried Crabble Patties, and a Music Box.

 

You will then need to use the Calcaduceus to enter the room and you will discover the U E N I A C. Interact with the machine and you will be given the following options:

• So, you're the Archive. Its voice, at least.
• Are you some form of... artificial intellect?
• Right! Since when do computronics talk? Whoever's speaking better show themselves!

Choosing option 2, the machine will explain that it is more accurate to think of the Archive, or U.E.N.I.A.C., as "Applied Statistics". It will then ask you how it can help you.

• I have a large cache of rift anomaly data that I need to process immediately.
• What just happened? Are you... okay?
• Did you say you're "nonsentient?" You seem pretty self-aware to me.
• Be back later

After the machine has reviewed the contents of your data, it will then ask you what the goal of your query is.

• I seek the means to permanently close the rifts.
• The Protectorate input similar data before? How long ago? I need the same results.

The UENIAC will explain that with its current suboptimal performance, it will take more time to do the calculations needed to give you an answer. You can ask if it can shave down the processing time and it will tell you that it needs to be repaired to address the damage it has sustained. Ask the UENIAC what you need to do for the repairs and it will point you towards to the Cold Storage and Thermal Transfer located in the Cloister Underlands. These objectives are part of the Main Quest A Complication with the Computronic Cerebrum.

As the interaction with the UENIAC ends, it will also tell you that it has unsealed one of the display cases in the main room outside. After you leave the room, you may obtain the Emanating Enlightened Seer Tutelary and you will have successfully regained control of the Archive.

 
 

 

Hand over the Calcaduceus to the Order

You then need to progress through A Complication with the Computronic Cerebrum and repair the UENIAC by going to Cloister Underlands. After clearing the objectives, you can make your way back to the Archive Central Interface and solve the personality crisis of UENIAC by setting it to the Actuational Priority (leaving the blue nodes active). After doing so, you will find a representative of the Order of the Ascendant. Junior Seer Amaryllis will be by the door and you can give the Calcaduceus to her as discussed during your conversation with Presiding Bishop Ruth Basar. This will complete the Main Quest A Complication with the Computronic Cerebrum.

 

Completing Methods of Applied Force

After you hand over the Calcaduceus to Junior Seer Amaryllis and hand over control of the Archive to the Order, you can make your way back to Laplace's Garden to report back to Ruth. She will not be in her office by the main stairwell; instead, you will be able to find her in an office to your left after you enter the area where you spoke to Artificer Laureate Enola Kraft.

  

Speak to Ruth inside the room and she will congratulate you for your success with the mission. You will receive x2000 Bit Cartridge and +10 Reputation with the Order of the Ascendant, as well as the usual quest XP. She will also say that she hopes that archaic methods of communicating with the Archive will soon not be necessary.

• I'd be happy to help. Whatever I can do to further the Order's cause.
• I rather enjoyed my chats with the Archive, actually.
• Wait? That's it? A quick pat on the back? I was hoping for a little more praise than that.
• Before we continue, you might be interested to hear the results of the data I processed.

Ruth will then tell you that while the Archive is an infinitely complex machine, it requires an equally complex tool to interact with it. Unfortunately, the tool bears a great toll on the wearer, and a certain remedy is needed to survive the effects. Ruth will mention that she lacks the chemicals needed to finish manufacturing the panacea.

• Chemicals? Sounds like something Auntie's Choice might have.
• That sucks, but what do you want me to do about it?
• Does this "panacea" have any relation to the drug in the water of Laplace's Garden? [Requires Information]

 

She will explain that the chemical is not intended for mass use. She will give you a Chemical Container and tell you that there is a plant on Praetor under Auntie's Choice that carries the chemicals she requires. She will tell you to infiltrate the facility and collect some of the chemicals for her treatment.

• How am I supposed to gain access to an Auntie's Choice plant?
• These chemicals you want me to retrieve... what do they do, exactly?
• Sounds violent. Count me in.
• If I have time, I'll look into it.

She will explain the possible effects of the chemicals if mixed with other agents, and if all goes according to her plan, she will be able to create something that eases the negative effects and discomfort of wearing the apparatus needed to utilize the Archive.

• This apparatus you've mentioned - it doesn't sound very safe.
• Thanks for taking the time to indulge my curiosity. I'll be going now. [Leave Conversation]
• [Requires Observation]

She will confirm that the apparatus used to communicate with the Archive is indeed not safe, but that human evolution and progress require risk. Ruth believes that it was better for her to take the responsibility than ask someone else to do so. Once the conversation ends, you will have officially completed Methods of Applied Force and also unlock the Faction Quest Agenda for Altered States.
