Monoco is a Character in Clair Obscur Expedition 33. Monoco, a scholarly yet bloodthirsty Gestral, joins the Expedition for the sheer thrill of battle, embracing combat as meditation. Characters are various members and allies of Expedition 33 who are on a quest to stop the "Paintress" from painting death. These characters are mainly party members who can fight in combat and explore the world of wonders inspired by Belle Époque France.
Monoco is a Gestral, a group of friendly beings who enjoy the thrill of battle and view competition as a form of meditation. As one of the few Gestrals who speak the human language, Monoco has adopted a scholarly demeanour which belies a bloodthirsty spirit. Though Gestrals are untouched by the Paintress, the prospect of combat entices Monoco to join the Expedition.

Monoco is a unique Gestral that allows him to shapeshift into a Nevron and use its skills. For Monoco to learn his Skills, he must be in an active party and defeat enemies that have this unique icon 
next to the enemy's health bar. Upon defeating the enemy, Monoco will acquire the foot and unlocks a new skill.
Moving to the unique combat mechanic, Monoco features a Bestial Wheel (see below), Monoco's skills will have designated "turns" that will move the Bestial Wheel pointer forward upon using the skill. The Bestial Wheel features various masks, clockwise in order 
Caster Mask, 
Agile Mask, 
Balanced Mask, 
Heavy Mask, and the 
Almighty Mask. Each mask, except Almighty, occurs twice in succession, for 9 total possible positions.
Each Skill of Monoco is tied to specific Masks, which means that before using a skill, players should look at where the Bestial Wheel Pointer is currently on to maximize the effects of the skill. For example one of Monoco's staring skills is Stalact Punches, which is tied to a Heavy Mask, players can use this at any time as long as he has enough AP, but it's more effective to use the skill when the Bestial Wheel Pointer is on a Heavy Mask to further increase its damage. On the other hand, the Almighty Mask is an "all-round mask" which also provides the same effect by buffing all of Monoco's skills.
Relationship Guide for Monoco in Clair Obscur Expedition 33
Upon reaching Act II of the game, Verso can start to build his relationship with his allies by spending time with them back at Camp. The primary factor in how to progress each character's story or to increase the level is by progressing the main story of the game. Each time you complete a major objective, progress the game, or clear out any explorable locations, it's a good practice to go back to the expeditioner's Camp and check up on the team.
Another factor is to choose "check up on others" by interacting with the bonfire to trigger any cutscenes, which can also contribute to unlocking the option to "spend time" with a character to increase the relationship level. As soon as you reach Act III, we highly recommend maxing out all the Relationship Levels with all the characters before finishing the last location of the main campaign.
- The Max Relationship Level is Level 7.
- Building Relationships becomes available in Act II.
- Before reaching Relationship Level 3, Verso will talk to Monoco about cutting his hair. Make sure to choose the following dialogue options:
- "Yes, my hair is impeccable."
- "Fine!" When Monoco tells Verso "You first then." to unlock the following: Samurai Haircut (Verso) and Viking Haircut (Monoco).
- Before upgrading your Relationship Level with Monoco to level 4, you'll have a 1v1 duel. Win the fight to acquire the following: 3x Resplendent Chroma Catalyst and 1x Recoat.
- At Relationship Level 4 with Monoco: Unlocks Gradient Attack for Monoco, Sanctuary.
- Before you can rank up to Relationship Level 6 with Monoco, you must complete his side quest, which is to accompany him to the Sacred River to resurrect Noco. Head to the Sacred River > Fight Golgra > Resurrect Noco >> return to Camp. See Expedition 33 Map Requires Esquie's ability to fly to reach the location.
- At Relationship Level 6 with Monoco: Acquire the "Monoco" Music Record.
- At Relationship Level 7 with Monoco: Unlocks Gradient Attack for Monoco, Break Point.
- Acquire the "Monoco" Trophy/Achievement for reaching Max Relationship Level with Monoco.

Glaise Earthquakes
This skill can be unlocked by obtaining the foot of a Glaise enemy, which can be found in foresty areas such as Yellow Harvest and Falling Leaves. The Glaise Earthquakes skill costs 4 AP points to cast, which makes it suitable for early fight skills while you're building up your AP. It deals medium Earth damage to all enemies. Although is not a large amount of damage to each enemy, it is still decent as it spreads out to multiple enemies instead of a single target, especially if the enemies or bosses you are up against have shields that need to be taken care of. Additionally, casting this skill will apply Powerful 
to yourself, and can be applied to all allies if you cast this skill while the pin is pointed to the Heavy Mask icon on the bestial wheel.
Portier Crash
This skill can be unlocked by obtaining the foot of a Portier enemy, which can be found in Spring Meadows and the tainted version of it in The Monolith. The Portier Crash skill costs 8 AP to cast and deals high Physical damage to all enemies with only 1 hit. This skill may be better to use later in the fight compared to the Glaise Earthquakes skill, as it deals higher in damage and can also Break when the meter is full. This can be beneficial later on in the fight to deal heavy damage to defeat the enemies. If this skill is cast while the pin of the Bestial Wheel is on the Heavy Mask icon, it can increase the damage of the attack.
Recommended Caster Mask Skills for Monoco
Creation Void
This skill can be unlocked by obtaining the foot of a Creation enemy, which can be found in Lumiere during Act III, making this skill a late-game skill to obtain. The Creation Void skill costs 9 AP to cast and deals extreme Void damage to random targets, dealing 3 hits. However if the same target is hit multiple times, more damage will be dealt. Additionally, if you cast this skill while the pin on the Bestial Wheel is on the Caster Mask icon, it will increase the damage dealt to enemies. This skill is best used at the end of the round if you are trying to defeat the final enemy or going against a single boss. Take advantage of the single target and the bestial wheel to maximize this skill's damage and defeat an enemy.
Bruler Bash
This skill can be unlocked by obtaining the foot of a Bruler enemy, which can be found in Flying Waters and the tainted version of it in The Monolith. The Bruler Bash skill costs 4 AP to cast which makes it suitable for the early sections of combat. It deals medium physical damage to a single target, landing 3 hits, while also being able to Break when the bar is full. Additionally, the damage for this skill can be increased if you cast this skill while the pin is on the Caster Mask icon on the Bestial Wheel.
Pelerin Heal
This skill can be unlocked by obtaining the foot of a Pelerin enemy, which can be found in the later game locations such as Frozen Hearts and Renoir's Drafts. The Pelerin Heal skill costs 5 AP to cast and applies Regen 
to all allies. Additionally, it can Heal 
40% of the team if this skill is cast when the pin lands on the Caster Mask icon on the Bestial Wheel. This is more of a support skill if you wish to have a different character be the main source of damage, it can also be added to the list of Monoco's skill as a safety net for the team.
Recommended Balanced Mask Skills for Monoco
Contorsionniste Blast
This skill can be unlocked by obtaining the foot of a Contorsionniste enemy, which can be found in later-game locations such as Visages, Act III of Lumiere, and Renoir's Drafts. The Contorsionniste Blast skill costs 6 AP to cast and deals a medium amount of physical damage to all enemies with only 1 hit. It will also Heal all allies by 10% for each enemy that gets hit with this attack. This makes the skill more useful in early stages of combat against enemies, the more enemies, the more you will be able to heal your allies if you were not able to block or evade coming attacks. Additionally, you will be able to deal more damage to enemies if you cast this skill while the pin is on the Balanced Mask icon on the Bestial Wheel.
Clair Enfeeble
This skill can be unlocked by obtaining the foot of a Clair enemy, which can be found in The Monolith as early as the Tainted Meadows section. The Clair Enfeeble skill costs 5 AP to cast and deals medium light damage to all enemies on the field with only 1 hit, which will apply Powerless
for 3 turns to each enemy. This will weaken the enemy's attack damage for 3 turns, giving you the upper hand for those few rounds. Additionally, if you cast this skill while the pin o the Bestial Wheel is on the Balanced Mask icon, the damage you deal from this skill will be increased.
Recommended Agile Mask Skills for Monoco
Chapelier Slash
This skill can be unlocked by obtaining the foot of a Chapelier enemy, which can be found in Visages. The Chapelier Slash skill costs 7 AP to cast and deals high physical damage to all enemies on the field and landing 3 hits each while also applying Mark
on each enemy. This lets you deal extra damage to the enemies, allowing you to defeat them quicker if you have a member on your team who is your main dps. Additionally, if you cast this skikll while the pin on the Bestial wheel is on the Agile Mask icon, it will increase the damage dealt to each enemy.
Chevaliere Piercing
This skill can be unlocked by obtaining the foot of a Ceramic Chevaliere enemy, which can be found in Old Lumiere and in the Tainted version of Lumiere in The Monolith. The Chevaliere Piercing skill costs 3 AP to cast and deals physical damage to a single target. If the target has shields, it will be able to attack the enemy through the shields, the damage will increase for each shield that the target has. This is useful in situations where you are against enemies that can apply shield multiple times. Your teammates can rid the shields while you can still deal damage to the enemy. Additionally, the damage will increase you cast this skill while the pin on the Bestial Wheel is on the Agile Mask icon.

Lampmaster Light
This skill can be unlocked by obtaining the foot of a Lampmaster enemy, which can be found in the Painting Workshop and in Stage 2, Trial 3, and in Stage 11, Trial 2 of the Endless Tower. The Lampmaster Light skill costs 5 AP to cast and deals high light damage to all enemies on the field with only 1 hit. Each time this skill is casted, the damage for this skill will be increased. Since this skill only takes 5 AP, it can easily be used multiple times in a battle. Additionally, if you cast this skill while the pin on the Bestial Wheel is on the Almighty Mask icon, it will further increase the damage of this skill.
Sakapatate Fire
This skill can be unlocked by obtaining the foot of the Ultimate Sakapatate enemy, which can be found in the Ancient Sanctuary, in the Gestral Village, in The Monolith, and also the Endless Night Sanctuary. The Sakapatate Fire skill costs 9 AP to cast, making this best for mid to late sections of the battle. It deals extreme Fire damage to all enemies with 3 hits, as well as applying 3 Burn 
per hit. Burn is a beneficial ailment to apply onto enemies as each round they can be damaged by the ailment, if paird with the right pictos, you may be able to apply burn as often as possible to enemies. Additionally, the damage for this skill can be increased if you cast this skill while the pin on the Bestial Wheel lands on the Almighty Mask icon.

Tips for Monoco's Brumaro Weapon
The Brumaro weapon for Monoco can be obtained by defeating the Choromatic Aberration boss in the southern section of The Continent. This weapon deals physical damage, has a max power of 3390 and scales an S in Vitality and an A in Agility, you will need to level up these attributes for Monoco to maximize the potential of this weapon. The passive effects for this weapon rely fully on when the Bestial Wheel lands on the Almighty Mask icon, when it does, it will have various effects that you can take advantage of, such as if given the chance, you die while the Bestial Wheel is on the Almighty Mask icon, you will revive with full health. Though this only occurs once per battle, it will save you from using items or having other teammates use their turn to revive you.
Tips for Monoco's Nusaro Weapon
The Nusaro weapon for Monoco can be obtained upon exploring Old Lumiere. This weapon deals Dark damage, has a max power of 4197, and scales an A in Vitality and an S in Agility, so you will need to level up these attributes for Monoco to maximize the potential of this weapon. The full passive effects of this weapon will allow you to manipulate the Bestial wheel by successfully parrying attacks, doing so will let you move the wheel where you want it to land by parrying the attacks, and then dodging the rest so it does not move or reset the wheel. Secondly, all of your upgraded skills will gain an additional increase in damage. Finally, each time the mask changes on the Bestial Wheel, you will gain +1 AP. So you can parry attacks to either gain 1AP or to change the mask on the Bestial Wheel, depending on your build and your playstyle with Monoco and the rest of the party.
Tips for Monoco's Baguettaro Weapon
The Baguettaro weapon for Monoco can be obtained by defeating the Mime in Verso's Drafts. This weapon deals Fire damage, has a max power of 3745, and scales a B in Defense and an A in Luck, so you will need to level up these attributes for Monoco to maximize the potential of this weapon. The passive effects for this weapon revolve around increasing damage and also increasing the effects of Burn on enemies, though you will need the Bestial Wheel to land on the Almighty Mask icon for the 2 effects to trigger.
Tips for Monoco's Esquiaro Weapon
The Esquiaro weapon for Monoco can be obtained in Verso's Drafts. This weapon deals Earth damage, has a max power of 3745, and scales an A in Vitality and a B in Defense, so you will need to level up these attributes for Monoco to maximize the full potential of this weapon. The passive effects for this weapon put a little more focus on defending Monoco and the party, as you can manipulate the Bestial Wheel to be on the Heavy Mask, what that does is give your team 1 shield and also reduces the damage they take.

SOS Healing Tint
This Picto scales in Defense and costs 10 Lumina points, you can obtain this Picto by defeating the Franctale enemy patrolling the woods left of the Gingerbread Door in Verso's Drafts. The lumina effect of this picto allows you to automatically consume a Healing Tint when you fall below half health. This effect will be able to keep you alive for a little longer, as long as the attack that you receive does not exceed 50% of your health.
Empowered Healer
This Picto scales in Health and Critical Rate and costs 10 Lumina points, you can obtain this Picto by completing the parkour challenge in Verso's Drafts. The lumina effect of this picto grants you 50% more damage for 1 turn after you use a healing skill either on yourself or for the team. The increase in damage right after a heal is a bonus as it can increase your chances of surviving the fight against heavy hitters.
Attack Lifesteal
This Picto scales in Health and Critical Rate and costs 15 Lumina points, you can obtain this Picto by picking it up in a cave within the Ancient Sanctuary. The lumina effect for this picto recovers 15% of your health with each Base attack you land. If you are low on health and have run out of consumables, you can perform a Base attack to slowly regain your health while dealing a small amount of damage to enemies. This can easily be used on smaller enemies or enemies that are close to being defeated.

Quick Break
This Picto scales in Speed and Critical Rate and costs 3 Lumina points, you can obtain this Picto by defeating the Chromatic Cruler Boss within the Endless Night Sanctuary. The lumina effect for this picto allows you to play another turn if you successfully break your target. This works well with Monoco's skills as he has several skills that can Break the target, which further gives you the upper hand to deal heavy damage to the Broken target.
Fueling Break
This Picto scales in Speed and Critical Rate and costs 5 Lumina points, you can obtain this Picto by picking it up by the portal to The Carousel in The Continent or completing Stage 7 Trial 3 in the Endless Tower. The lumina effect for this picto doubles the Burn amount on your target after you break them. As Monoco has several skills that can inflict burn and several skills that can break a target, this works well in his kit to further increase the damage, whether actively or passively.
Energising Break
This Picto scales in Speed and Critical Rate and costs 3 Lumina points, you can obtain this Picto by picking it up behind the Chromatic Troubadour within Flying Waters. The lumina effect for this picto grants you +3 AP upon breaking a target. If paired with the Quick Break lumina effect and Monoco's list of skills and attacks that can break a target, you can gain 3 extra AP to land a deadly attack to defeat the enemy.

Monoco's Story in Clair Obscur Expedition 33
Monoco Outside the Canvas
Within the canvas, Monoco is known as the intelligent, bloodthirsty Gestral who enjoys fighting and collecting feet. This character is actually inspired by one of the Sandfall developers' dogs, Monoco. Who can be found on the Team tab on the Sandfall page, listed as the Happiness Manager under Production & Operations. Monoco is a black and white Border Collie Britt who enjoys biting on people's feet, which became the sole combat mechanic for Monoco as he requires feet from various enemies to unlock skills.
Monoco the Dog can actually be found all around The Manor. The most notable spot is on a dog bed with a smaller dog, who is also a gestral in the canvas known as Noco. This dog bed can be found in front of the fireplace, you will learn that his name in the game is actually Monoco the Third and is sat by Noco, peacefully sleeping. Another notable instance is in a secret room within the manor that you can access by jumping through a painting on the left side of the staircase upon reaching the Entry Hall. A large painting of Monoco the Dog can be found at the end of the room, where you can also pick up a Shape of Life. In other smaller instances, you can find small picture frames of Monoco the Dog in various rooms.
Monoco the Gestral
You meet Monoco in Monoco's Station in Act II. He is very loyal to Verso and will stick by his side, whether he agrees with his views and choices or not. Monoco is created by Verso to have a recreation of his beloved dog as a gestral within the canvas. Later in the game, Noco is injured, and this visibly hurts Monoco. He persistently brings Noco to the Sacred River to revive him, even though he knows that they will never come back the same. The idea that this place has been created by Verso and Clea could have been due to experiencing the loss of their dog, Monoco. Hence, why they now have Monoco, the Third by the fireplace.
Monoco's loyalty towards Verso and Noco is strong but different. Monoco is loyal to Verso, and though they have scenes where he is hesitant, he still supports Verso, especially when Verso chooses to erase the canvas. He is aware that he, too, will be erased, but he accepts it. On the other hand, his loyalty to Noco is out of love and duty. As dogs, Noco took care of Monoco the Third. As they both age, Monoco the Gestral believes this responsibility lies on him to care for Noco, as Noco was there for him.
