General Covenant Notes, lore and tips in Dark Souls 3

  • The Duality of Mad of Mound-Makers: The Mound-Makers are the only covenant governed by two entirely different sets of engine mechanics depending on how they enter a world. As their covenant item states, they become "mad spirits whether summoned as co-operators or invaders." If a Mound-Maker uses a White Sign Soapstone, they spawn as a pseudo-cooperator, they can lock onto and kill the host, but they can also attack and be attacked by the level's standard PvE enemies.
  • The Sunless Realms Questline Lockout: Players must exercise extreme caution when interacting with the Rosaria's Fingers covenant. Sirris of the Sunless Realms is sworn enemies with this faction. If you offer a Pale Tongue to Rosaria specifically to Deepen your devotion by rank up the covenant, Sirris will immediately abandon the Firelink Shrine, permanently locking you out of her questline, armor set, and the Silvercat Ring. She warns you: "We are of diverging paths. The next time we cross, it may be as adversaries." Note that utilizing Rosaria to re-allocate your stats or change your appearance does not trigger Sirris's hostility; only actively ranking up the covenant causes the questline to fail.
  • Mechanical Redundancy  of the Sentinels and the. Darkmoons: Players frequently wonder about the difference between the Blue Sentinels and the Blades of the Darkmoon, as they both serve the exact same engine function: auto-summoning to protect Way of Blue members. Mechanically, there is no difference in matchmaking priority. You can equip either item to farm Proof of a Concord Kept, they are functionally identical in the game's code.
