NPCs or Non-Player Characters in Dark Souls 3 refer to the many pre-designed inhabitants that players meet throughout their journey. These NPCs often provide valuable information that helps players piece together the lore of the game. Some are quest givers or are related to each other in various ways, while many are merchants with whom players can trade for equipment, magic, and items. Below is a list of all these characters, with names taken from the game credits, provided via dialogue, or, if nothing else was available at the time of creation, described by the community. Each NPC contributes uniquely to the player's experience, offering assistance, challenges, or deeper insight into the game's world.

General NPCs Notes, Trivia and Tips in Dark Souls 3
- Hostility and NPCs: Most friendly NPCs in Dark Souls 3 maintain a hostility threshold; while a stray hit may be ignored, sustained aggression will cause them to turn permanently hostile for the duration of the current playthrough. If an NPC becomes aggressive, the Ashen One should avoid killing them if they wish to continue that NPC's questline. Instead, they can travel to the Statue of Velka located in the Undead Settlement sewers. By paying a soul fee based on their current Soul Level, the Ashen One can request Absolution. This action resets the hostility of specific NPCs who have been provoked, returning them to a friendly state. Note that Absolution does not grant a global reset for every NPC in the world, and it cannot revive any NPC who has already been killed.
- Merchant death and NPC Ashes: If merchant NPCs is killed, their unique inventory is not necessarily lost, provided they drop their specific "Ashes" upon death. By delivering these ashes to the Shrine Handmaid in Firelink Shrine, she will expand her own inventory to include the items previously sold by the deceased NPCs. The Ashen One should exercise caution, however: killing the Shrine Handmaid will cause her to respawn, but her prices will permanently increase by 20% for the remainder of the current playthrough. Blacksmith Andre, conversely, cannot be killed; if provoked, he will simply refuse to provide his services until the Ashen One seeks Absolution at the Statue of Velka. The Shrine Handmaid page holds a table of all the Items the Shrine Handmaid will gain depending on whose Ashes you give the Shrine Handmaid.
