General Locations Notes, Lore and Tips

  • Global Triggers: The locations within Dark Souls 3 are not entirely static, they are subject to massive, global visual shifts based on the Ashen One's progression. Defeating three Lords of Cinder triggers a global world state alteration known as the Darksign Eclipse. Once this threshold is crossed, the skybox in the High Wall of Lothric, Lothric Castle, and the Undead Settlement will permanently shift from a pale sun to a bleeding, dark eclipse. Additionally, the lighting and enemy placements in certain transitional areas will change to reflect the encroaching darkness. Recognizing these triggers is crucial, as revisiting early locations late in the journey will yield a drastically different, significantly more hostile atmosphere.
  • Bosses and Multiplayer Availability in Locations: Every location utilizes a background flag regarding its designated boss. When the Ashen One defeats the primary boss of a specific region, that area is immediately designated as "cleared." This status permanently disables the ability to summon friendly phantoms via the White Sign Soapstone within those boundaries and eliminates vulnerability to hostile random invasions. However, the Ashen One may still summon hostile phantoms via the Red Sign Soapstone for dueling. It is essential to complete desired cooperative exploration or covenant objectives within a given location before slaying its final boss, as these multiplayer functions cannot be restored until the following journey.
  • Entering Locations and deaths: Entering specific locations acts as a hardcoded trigger that silently advances the state of various non-hostile characters. Crossing the physical threshold into areas such as the Catacombs of Carthus or Irithyll Dungeon causes certain individuals to relocate, vanish, or perish if prerequisites remain unfulfilled. For instance, entering the Catacombs without first exhausting Yoel of Londor's services causes his immediate death at Firelink Shrine, permanently locking the Ashen One out of a specific game ending. To avoid these outcomes, it is vital to finalize all dialogue and quest steps within existing areas before venturing into new territories.
