1 Honda Civic SI Sedan

Starting our list of the best sedans under 50k is the Honda Civic SI. Honda is known for relatively affordable dependability, which is exactly what you'll find in this front-wheel-drive sports car. The Civic SI is the sportiest version of the Civic sedan, but not quite as powerful or aggressive as the Type R hatchback. It's powered by a 1.5-liter turbocharged inline-4 that makes 200 horsepower and 192 lb-ft of torque. Flooring the accelerator from a standstill launches the car to 60 mph in 6.6 seconds with its standard 6-speed manual transmission. Buyers can get all that and more for its starting price of $31,495.

2 Kia K5

Not all of our favorite sedans under 50k have to be particularly sporty or luxurious - the Kia K5 is simply a well-balanced, affordable four-door sedan. Kia is continuously proving with its sales data that Americans want and need cheap cars. We appreciate the K5 for offering two engines in a lineup of five trims. The cheapest option is the LXS FWD for $27,490 that comes with a 2.5-liter inline-4 making 191 hp and 181 lb-ft of torque. On the higher end, the GT trim gets a turbocharger that boosts power to 290 hp and 311 lb-ft of torque for $33,590, which might make it the fastest sedan under 50k. Even the most premium trim (the EX) stays well under $50k, too.

3 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Sedan

One of the best luxury sedans under 50k is the humble C-Class sedan. The C-Class is about as basic and common as a Mercedes-Benz can get; they're everywhere for a reason. This piece of German luxury doesn't come cheap, as it starts near the boundary of this list's budget at $49,650 before destination, options, taxes, and other fees. Only the base model, the C300, starts below $50k. This version has a 2.0-liter turbo inline-4 mild hybrid that makes 255 hp and 295 lb-ft, allowing it to sprint to 60 mph in 6 seconds. We also enjoy it for its standard features, like heated front seats, remote start, sliding/tilting moonroof, and more.

4 Genesis G70

A competitor to the C-Class with better reliability, a lower starting price, and great styling is the Genesis G70. There are so many Mercedes-Benz models on the road that we would rather stand out in an equally luxurious model like the G70. Genesis offers eight trims of the G70, with the first three falling under $50k. The model starts at $43,450 for the 2.5T RWD variant. It finds 300 hp and 311 lb-ft of torque from a 2.5-liter turbocharged inline-4 paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Moving up to the 2.5T Prestige RWD means spending $48,450, but it comes with heated and ventilated leather front seats, Brembo brakes, Smart cruise control, and more.

5 Volkswagen Jetta GLI

Another nimble sedan under $50,000 is the Volkswagen Jetta GLI. You can think about this model as being a sedan variant of the Golf GTI. It directly rivals the Civic SI at the top of this list, as well as the Kia K4 GT-Line Turbo. We think it outclasses the K4 by a long shot with its 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 that makes 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. It's only available with front-wheel drive, but buyers can choose between a 6-speed manual and a 7-speed automatic transmission. The base model, called the Autobahn trim, starts at $33,745.

6 Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class

The standard C-Class is a great way to spend $50k on a new luxury car, but Mercedes-Benz also offers the CLA-Class sedan. We think it's worthy of an entry here. It's an all-electric model with respectable range and power for its class. Not only do we appreciate it for its specifications, but we're impressed that Mercedes kept the price of its two trim levels within our budget. The CLA 250+ with EQ Technology starts at $47,250 and the CLA 350 4Matic starts at $49,800. The cheaper option has 268 hp and the pricier model has 349 hp. The latter can also sprint to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds.

7 Cadillac CT5

Cadillac is still around with some incredibly fast, exciting models like the CT5-V Blackwing. However, this entry focuses on the basic CT5. The CT5 earns a good BuzzScore of 8.3 out of 10 with ease as it rivals the MB C-Class, BMW 3 Series, and the Genesis G70. Under the hood is a standard 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 that makes 237 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. The CT5's 0-60 mpg sprint ranges from 6.6 seconds with RWD to 6.9 seconds with AWD, since the AWD system adds to the sedan's weight. In its most basic setup, the model starts at $49,200.

8 BMW 3 Series Sedan

BMW makes it onto our list of the best sedans for under $50k with its 3 Series. The 3 Series sedan is just as popular and widespread as its main rival, the C-Class. Excluding the M3 and its variants, there are four trims to choose from. The M340i models are out of our budget, but the 330i and 330i xDrive start at $48,000 and $50,000, respectively. They're both powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 mild hybrid that makes 255 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque; the xDrive model is barely quicker, though, with a 5.4-second 0-60 mph sprint.

9 Audi A3 Sedan

In the past, we would have included the S3 as our favorite Audi sedan for under $50k. Unfortunately, the automaker pushed its price past our limit, so the standard Audi A3 is taking its place with a starting price of $40,100 before destination. It might not be as fast, but we're not disappointed by the A3's standard Quattro AWD being driven by a simple 2.0-liter turbo inline-4 that makes 201 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque. It can reach 60 mph in a reasonable 6 seconds flat, and its 7-speed automatic transmission is smooth. As the cheapest Audi on sale, the A3 does a good job representing its brand.

10 Cadillac CT4

This might be surprising, but the most affordable rear-wheel-drive sedan in America this year is the Cadillac CT4. While there are plenty of sedans left between budget brands and luxury automakers, Cadillac takes the cake for having a relatively cheap RWD model at a base price of $36,000. The CT4 is smaller than the CT5, but remains a luxurious entry point to the brand. It's powered by the same 2.0L turbo I4 as the CT5's base model, which gets tuned for the same 237 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. It's also a bit quicker than the CT5, since it has less weight to push around - it can sprint to 60 mph in 6.2 seconds.

Characteristics Of Sub-$50k Sedans

It is hard to find specific similarities between the different cars ranging from $15k-$50k aside from having four doors and an engine. But, there are certain expectations as you approach the $50,000 mark.

• Performance: You can get your hands on some pretty high-performance vehicles, with some of the fastest sedans under $50k including sporty models like the all-electric Mercedes CLA and BMW 3 Series sedan. Small-capacity turbocharged engines help keep costs down while still delivering great power outputs. Most of these are small cars, too, so that helps with handling.
• Features: Since you can get a luxury sedan for under $50k, there aren’t too many features that aren’t available at this price point. Dual- or even tri-zone climate control, heated and ventilated seats, and electrically assisted seat adjustments are all common features that help make these cars more comfortable. The infotainment and safety suites are usually quite extensive, too.
• Value: Obviously, a defining quality of these vehicles is that they won’t cost you an arm and a leg. Yes, it’s still quite a lot of money, but many of the top sedans under $50k deliver a lot more value for money than a six-figure model would. Similarly, a cheap $20k car might cover most of the bases and arguably deliver better value, but it also comes down to where your priorities lie. If you want a good combination of performance, comfort, safety, and practicality, it’s hard to beat a midsize 4-door sedan approaching the $50,000 mark.

What To Consider When Buying A Sedan Under $50k

Sadly, you do need to spend a lot more money if you want to approach automotive perfection, so cars that cost less than $50k are still going to require some compromise. Sure, they have their strengths, but there will be a few weaknesses that you’ll have to weigh to determine which model will be the best for you. But knowing what to look out for will help you capitalize on the good and minimize any shortcomings.
