While electric cars are associated with modern times, station wagons are straight out of their peak in the 80s. Station wagons like the Cadillac CTS Sport Wagon from 2010-2014 proved that practical cars could be fun, too, while the Volvo V60 and V90 Cross Country models have offered some ruggedness off the beaten path over the years. But wagons were quickly abandoned when the SUV wave came in at the start of the millennium, as they offered more versatility and confidence off-road.

Still, station wagons such as these magnificent specimens still exist in 2026 - and you even get some exceptional hybrid wagons - but what about all-electric versions? With electric cars, however, range is one of their main drawbacks. That means the aerodynamic shape of a station wagon can actually work in its favor to eke out as much mileage as possible. Electric wagons might be rare with only one manufacturer brave enough to offer them right now in 2026, but we're sure more will come with time as more customers choose electrons to get around.

With only two EV station wagon models, it's no surprise that they both come from Europe and from the same manufacturer. Wagons are much more popular across the world than in the US, and Porsche have committed to making them with the Taycan sedan's bigger brothers. The regular Taycan Cross Turismo comes in two flavors, and both have AWD as standard and a lightly reinforced design.

The regular Taycan 4 Cross Turismo has a range of about 277 miles, and the main difference between it and the 'S' version is the power, which starts at 429 horsepower both under regular driving and launch control. Speaking of, the Cross Turismo can accelerate to 60 miles per hour in just 4.5 seconds. As standard on this model, there are heated seats in the front, adaptive air suspension and wireless charging for your smartphone.

The 4S takes everything one step further in the power department, with 509 horsepower in normal driving and up to 590 when you're launching. The extra power at launch means this EV wagon can get to 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds. Extra power doesn't hurt range much either, with 272 miles available for you at 100%. It doesn't take long to charge, either, with 10-80% happening in just 18 minutes. That's great when you need to do a road trip in your EV station wagon.

Compared to the regular Taycan and Taycan Sport Turismo, the Cross Turismo is a bit more rugged with plastic wheelarch trims, extra ground clearance and protection underneath. There's even a gravel mode, which makes this wagon extra comfortable when the going gets a bit tougher.

If you want one of the best electric station wagons to do everything you ask from it, the Turbo line of Taycan Cross Turismo models may be the answer. Power is the obvious extra here, but these Turbo models also have a lot more standard features than the '4' versions. That means you find a Bose sound system, a heated steering wheel and the Sport Chrono package. The latter adds a special steering wheel, a stopwatch, and a 'push-to-pass' function that increases power when you demand it.

The base turbo has a massive 871 horsepower and a 2.6-second launch to 60 mph, but the 'S' goes up to 938 horses and allows for a 2.4 second time. That's plenty impressive, but when you mix that in with a 41.4 cubic feet maximum carrying capacity in the back (not counting the 2.9 cube frunk), this best electric station wagon makes a lot of sense as a daily driver.

The Turbo S does come with a slight compromise to range (making it only 261 miles), but when you pay this much for a station wagon, you'll become addicted to launching it and not caring.

With any EV station wagon though, a big consideration is how it looks. Many wagons simply look better than their SUV counterparts, and the Taycan is one of them. The low and wide stance makes it feel much more sporty and the modern Porsche design language lends itself well. While there are only two models for now, we think that electric station wagon models may rise with customer demand in the future.

The Characteristics Of An EV Station Wagon

These are the characteristics that define an EV wagon:

  • Powertrain: You can’t have an EV wagon without an electric powertrain, which comprises electric motors and high-capacity batteries. These potent, silent setups deliver excellent performance and fuel economy ratings. Getting to full charge does take much longer than refueling a gas tank, but the savings are worth it.
  • Performance: Electric motors are known for their instantaneous kick, which is a defining quality of the EV class. These wagons are particularly enjoyable to drive, with rapid 0-60 mph times of under four seconds in some derivatives.
  • Appearance: New electric vehicles tend to turn heads with their futuristic designs that buck traditional style trends. Now, combine that with the wagon body style, and you get something truly unique. Whether or not this is for the best will depend on the shopper, as taste is subjective.
  • Pricing: The cost of EVs is still one of the biggest barriers buyers have to overcome, especially in markets like the USA, where people want the most value for their money. However, as more and more brands get on board the electrification bandwagon, the price is dropping significantly.

What To Consider When Buying An EV Wagon

Though we don’t have a great many models to examine, electric wagons have proven that the benefits of the technologies used do outweigh the disadvantages.

Pros

  • Improved fuel efficiency
  • Strong, instantaneous power
  • Quiet, comfortable ride quality
  • Excellent passenger and cargo capacity

Cons

  • Higher price tags than gas-powered cars
  • Not many options in the USA
  • Limited all-electric range
