Traditional sedan cars, as we know them, have had a tough time of late, with sports utility vehicles eating up market share in the USA, alongside ever-popular pickup trucks. But for many of us, the three-box still holds plenty of appeal, being lighter on fuel and offering a more engaging driving experience than heavier trucks and crossovers. This also means that they can double down on the strengths of new innovations such as electric powertrains, delivering some of the most exciting driving experiences on the road while still boasting superior overall range.

However, the move away from V8 and V6 engines may spell the demise of popular segments, like old-school muscle cars. For the time being, however, these three-box cars top our rankings as the best sedans of 2026.

1 2026 Hyundai Sonata

You'll see throughout this list that there's a lot of variety, and we're starting off with the Hyundai Sonata, which promises a more engaging driving experience and efficiency than its SUV rivals in the sub-$30k range. This is one of the cool-looking sedans that you don't need to spend a fortune on, and its base spec comes with 191 horsepower, a large touchscreen and lots of standard safety features. It might not be the most premium sedan here, but it certainly continues the dying trend of stylish yet affordable sedans.

"Hyundai continues to do what it does best: It offers attractive vehicles with competitive pricing and surprisingly upscale interiors. It's not that the Hyundai Sonata looks like a luxury car, but that it still looks more luxurious than you'd expect for the price. 2 2026 Hyundai Elantra

The Elantra is the value proposition from Hyundai, and we know that the Korean car brands are great at making premium cars, including sedans, at a low price point. It has a sharp design, which feels a notch above its Corolla and Civic competitors, and in hybrid form, it gets over 50 mpg easily. Our test drivers loved its power delivery too, as even though it's not the most powerful in its class, the 195- lb-ft of torque hits very low in the rev range, making it zippy around town.

It blends stylish looks, peppy performance, and outstanding fuel economy at an affordable price. 3 2026 Honda Civic Si

The Honda Civic Si is part of a dying breed of fun-to-drive sedan models, especially thanks to its manual gearbox and sheer pleasure-to-drive nature that's so common on modern Hondas. The 2026 momdel comes with a 1.5L turbocharged four-cylinder pumping out 200 horsepower, which might not seem like a lot, but it weighs less than 3,000 lbs. Honda knows exactly what its customer base wants, and has equipped this car with auto rev-matching and a short-throw gear change. This is what a true driver's car in sedan format looks like in 2026.

4 2026 Lucid Air Sapphire

The 2026 Lucid Air Sapphire is one of the craziest - and best sedans - money can buy right now. It's also one for the numbers, giving you 1,234 horsepower at your disposal, a 1.89 second 0-60 time, and a 427-mile range. You can also charge to 200 miles in only 15 minutes, making long journeys a breeze. Being the top trim in the lineup, massaging seats, generous materials and heated wipers are all included in the eyewatering $249k starting price.

5 2026 Mercedes-Benz S-Class

While the gap has narrowed, the S-Class used to be what every other sedan wanted to be. It introduced ABS, crumple zones, night vision and even massaging seats into the motoring world. Now it sits at the top of the Mercedes-Benz range with available hybrid power for an even smoother ride. It can even scan the road ahead to prepare the car for upcoming bumps and make disruptions to your nap in the backseat a thing of the past. Mercedes also knows that many people will be in the back — that's why they've introduced rear cabin airbags for extra safety.

6 2026 Porsche Taycan

The Porsche Taycan proves that a Porsche doesn't have to have a flat-six to stay engaging and interesting to drive. You might think you need the crazy 1,019-hp performance of the Turbo GT to have great performance, but even the most affordable Taycan still has 402 horses and a sub-five second 0-60 time. You can also spec a wagon version of the Taycan, which maximizes cargo space in the back, as the sedan only gives you 14.3 cubic feet of space. This is one of the best sedans for electric power.

7 2026 Lucid Air

The Sapphire might steal all the spotlight for sheer performance, but the regular Lucid Air sedan is still a compelling buy in a growing electric sedan market. The Pure is the base variant, but it packs 400 horsepower and 400 miles of range, which is better than most electric vehicles on the market today. It also doesn't hurt that it's one of the best-looking sedans, too. When we drove it, we appreciated the fit-and-finish of the Air, especially in the high-traffic areas of the cabin you touch most. Folding the rear seats also gives you 64.8 cubic feet of space, impressive for this shape of car.

8 2026 Kia K5

A bit more down to Earth after the Lucid Air, the Kia K5 is a great buy thanks to unique styling and a generous array of interior equipment. That sedan shape also gives you 35.2 inches of legroom. Unlike its Hyundai rivals, it cannot offer a hybrid powertrain, but there are two powertrain options: either a 191-hp 2.5L four-cylinder, or the same engine with a turbo that makes 290 hp. Unfortunately, though, it can't be considered a 'proper' sporty sedan as it's only front-wheel-drive, but when you need to punch it at the lights, it has the power to do so. It's also an attainable buy, with a sub-$30k starting price.

9 2026 Genesis G90

A relatively new player in the luxury market, the Genesis G90 sits at the top of the Korean luxury sedan market. It's one of the last non-performance vehicles you can find in the US with a supercharger, and it makes sure to stay efficient with a mild-hybrid setup. Inside is where the magic happens, though, as you get a heads-up display, massaging seats for all passengers, and Bang & Olufsen 3D audio. It might not be exactly a cheap buy, but when you consider the S-Class at over $100k, the Genesis should also be on your radar as one of the top-rated sedans for value for money.

10 2026 Toyota Camry

The Toyota Camry used to mean you didn't care much if your car was particularly exciting, but the latest Camry gives you an actually attractive car and a powertrain that sips fuel. It's one of our top sedans because of its interior technology and design, which includes a wireless charger, a driver's display and a nine-speaker JBL sound system. All Camry models are now hybrids, and you can get it in FWD or AWD flavor, which ups power to 232 hp. It's not the highest rated sedan for driver dynamics due to the CVT, but it's decently good to drive and provides a no-frills experience.

With a long and storied history, the sedan has evolved a lot over the years. However, there are fundamental traits that define the body style. Though how much any single model leans into or away from these inherent characteristics is dependent on the brand and the target market, you can be assured that most sedans will still have a lot in common, such as:

• Driving dynamics: While larger vehicles like crossovers and pickups might be able to go where a sedan can’t, they can’t compete when it comes to nimble handling and high-speed agility. Sedans deliver some of the most thrilling dynamics on the road, especially in their sportier specifications.
