In Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Mounts provide a fast and efficient way to traverse the open world. Unlike some previous titles in the series, the game exclusively features horses as mounts, with no functional differences between them. However, Animus Store mounts introduce more fantastical, folklore-inspired designs, though these changes are purely cosmetic.
Mount System Overview
Mount Speed & Handling
- All mounts run at the same speed, roughly twice as fast as Naoe’s sprinting speed.
- There is no stamina system, meaning mounts can gallop indefinitely without slowing down.
- Unlike Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, mounts in Shadows do not require upgrades.
- Mounts can swim by default, allowing for seamless travel across bodies of water.
- Mounts will not jump off cliffs, and will instead turn back when encountering impassable terrain.
Mount Interaction & Features
- Pathfinder Navigation: When mounted, players can enable Pathfinder mode, which highlights roads leading to the current quest objective or waypoint marker.
- As Naoe, players can switch between sitting and standing on the saddle.
- Standing on the saddle lowers maneuverability but allows quick dismounting, enabling a seamless transition into combat or parkour.
- Mounts automatically flee when combat begins or if the player is knocked off by a ranged attack.
- Players cannot attack from horseback in Shadows.
Mount Customization
- While mounts have different rarities, their differences are purely cosmetic.
- Saddles can be equipped to horses, but these are also purely visual and do not affect performance.
- The Hideout features Stables, but these do not function as a mount management system.
- Unlike some previous Assassin’s Creed titles, mounts are not stored or managed at the Stables.
How to Obtain Mounts
Although the mounts don’t offer major gameplay differences, they provide an important visual element, allowing players to customize their experience. A smaller amount of special mounts can be acquired through:
- Completing specific quests
- Buying premium mounts from the Animus Store (Note: Saddles cannot be purchased separately in the Animus Store; they come bundled with their respective mount).
But aside from that, most mounts can be acquired from two specific ways:
- Horse Archery: Completing Horse Archery courses with a perfect score.
- Purchasing from Vendors: Buying mounts from vendors in towns and settlements.
In the following sections, you’ll find maps detailing where to locate each mount, as well as a full list of mounts with specific acquisition methods for each:
