Assassin's Creed Shadows elevates the art of combat with a dynamic system that adapts to both stealthy shinobi tactics and the relentless prowess of a seasoned samurai. Featuring two protagonists—Naoe and Yasuke—combat scenarios vary dramatically based on character choice and weaponry.
Combat Basics
Light Attacks
Quick and fluid, light attacks deliver small but reliable damage. These strikes allow for rapid chaining into combos, though certain foes can shrug them off if not countered effectively.
Heavy Attacks
Heavy attacks deal increased damage and are designed to stagger enemies, creating crucial openings. Although slower than light attacks, they are essential for breaking through enemy defenses.
Posture Attacks
Charging an attack by holding down the input boosts its damage significantly. Posture Attacks can be maintained indefinitely, letting you adjust your approach and target selection. They are especially effective for shattering enemy guard stances. As noted by the game director Charles Benoit, "Light attacks can be postured a bit faster than heavy ones, but heavy posture attacks pack one hell of a punch if timed correctly." Combining light, heavy, and posture attacks is key to crafting complex, devastating combos.
Vulnerable State
Perfect dodges can render enemies vulnerable for a brief period. This window allows the deployment of a posture attack or active ability to inflict massive damage.
Defense Basics
Dodge
Both Naoe and Yasuke perform directional dodges. Naoe relies on agile rolls, while Yasuke’s dodge-steps keep him upright. Note that Yasuke’s second consecutive dodge has a slight recovery period.
Parry / Deflect
Yasuke's parry sends enemies rebounding in a straight line, leaving them open to counterattacks, whereas Naoe's deflect pivots her around the foe to expose their flanks. These nuanced differences ensure each character’s defensive style aligns with their unique combat roles.
Block
Exclusive to Yasuke, blocking allows him to withstand incoming strikes—including arrows and kunai—by turtling behind his weapon. However, even his block cannot mitigate unstoppable attacks.
Skills and Abilities
Active abilities in Shadows offer powerful gap closers, armor-breaking strikes, and even health regeneration. Earning Mastery Points by leveling up or defeating foes lets players invest in weapon-based skills via detailed Mastery trees. In addition, passive skills such as enhanced adrenaline regeneration and time dilation improve overall combat efficiency.
Dual Protagonists' Dynamics
Both Naoe and Yasuke share core combat mechanics, yet their playstyles diverge significantly:
- Naoe excels in quick, agile combat. Her abilities favor rapid strikes and versatile weapon choices that often open up stealth opportunities.
- Yasuke is built for sustained, heavy combat. His combos feature powerful finishing moves capable of breaking enemy guard stances. Unique to him is the link-attack ability, which allows seamless mid-combo weapon switching for continuous offense.
Naoe's Arsenal
- Katana: Balanced, offering swift strikes and the ability to stagger foes.
- Kusarigama: Perfect for crowd control, with a chain mechanism to push back groups.
- Tanto & Hidden Blade: Designed for rapid, precise assassinations and executing double kills.
Yasuke's Arsenal
- Long Katana: A versatile weapon for both offense and defense.
- Naginata: Excellent for managing groups by keeping multiple enemies at bay.
- Kanabo: A heavy-hitting weapon ideal for breaking enemy defenses, though it requires precise timing.
- Yumi Bow: Offers long-range precision and the ability to eliminate targets from a distance.
- Teppo Rifle: Combines high lethality and armor penetration for powerful ranged attacks, albeit with slower fire rates.
Enemy Archetypes
Recognizing enemy behaviors is crucial. Enemies employ flurry attacks, unstoppable strikes, and coordinated defensive actions that require careful timing to counter. Mastery of dodging, parrying, and using the right mix of light, heavy, and posture attacks will allow players to exploit enemy vulnerabilities effectively.
Outlaws
Opportunistic fighters who rely on unconventional tactics. Despite their often lower skill level, their unpredictable behavior can surprise you.
Ashigaru Soldiers
The backbone of any army, these conscripts are aggressive and relentless. They are more likely to target Naoe due to her agility, while Yasuke’s imposing presence tends to intimidate them.
Ronin
Masterless samurai who, despite their rough appearance, are highly trained. They patrol unpredictably and will attack on sight, requiring precise timing to dispatch.
Samurai
Elite warriors with comprehensive skill sets and robust defenses. When unaware, they can be taken down swiftly; however, once alerted, their coordination and counterattacks make them formidable foes.
Samurai Daisho
Found primarily in military castles, these specialized samurai employ a blend of techniques that demand careful observation and precise counterplay.
Guardians
An elite cadre of samurai reinforcements distinguished by their white manes and face masks. They are used to fortify defenses and pose some of the toughest challenges in combat.
Enemy Tactics
Flurry Attacks
Marked by a blue glint on the enemy's weapon, these rapid-fire strikes come continuously. Successful parrying of each blow can expose the enemy’s vulnerability; however, missing even one may result in a relentless barrage.
Unstoppable Attacks
Identified by a red glint, these high-impact moves should ideally be dodged. While blocking or parrying can defuse some of their energy, doing so may compromise your guard and leave you open to follow-up strikes.
Defensive Actions
When faced with an attack, enemies can choose from a range of responses to try and turn the tide in their favor. These are known as defensive actions, ranging from a simple step back that sidesteps a single blow to lightning-fast, unstoppable counterattacks that will test your nerves.
Typically, when more enemies join a battle, each one tends to take fewer defensive measures, believing that their sheer numbers will be sufficient to overpower you. In a one-on-one duel with a highly skilled warrior, you will find yourself engaged in a flurry of defensive maneuvers, almost non-stop. This will challenge you to vary your attacks and make the most of every technique you have mastered throughout your journey.
