Knowledge Activities are one of the main activity types that you'll find in the open world of Assassin's Creed Shadows.
As you are exploring the open world of 16th-century Japan, you will come across many different activity types that Naoe and Yasuke can partake in to either earn new loot, unlock a new fast travel point, or, in the case of Knowledge Activities, better their abilities. Most activities will appear on the map as question marks (?) before changing to a unique symbol that signifies the type of activity once you discover them. New unknown activities can be marked on the map by performing a Synchronization at a Viewpoint.

What are Knowledge Activities?
Knowledge Activities are a group of activities in Assassin's Creed Shadows that all award 
Knowledge Points. These activities are all easily identified by their bright orange color-scheme, which is the same color as the Knowledge Points.
There are a total of seven distinct activities that award Knowledge Points. Two of these activities can be undertaken by either Yasuke or Naoe, whereas the other five are exclusive to one character or the other. However, even though some of the activities may be character-specific, the Knowledge Points earned from them are universal, meaning that you will increase the Knowledge Rank of Naoe and Yasuke simultaneously.
Why are Knowledge Activities Important?
Finding and completing Knowledge Activities is an extremely important part of Assassin's Creed Shadows, as they are your primary method of progressing Naoe and Yasuke's abilities. Even if you have all of the Mastery Points required to unlock a new Ability, you won't be able to purchase it until you reach the required Knowledge Rank, of which there are eight. The Knowledge Points earned from completing Knowledge Activities are how you increase these Knowledge Ranks, unlocking access to new, more powerful abilities and bonuses as well as the open-ended Knowledge Path system.
Additionally, some Knowledge Activities - namely Kofuns and Hidden Trails - will award special rewards, such as exclusive Legendary and Epic gear, to those able to complete them. Some of these items are extremely powerful and build-defining, making them a great thing to keep a lookout for when exploring the wilds of Feudal Japan.

Shrines
Sites of religious worship where you must pray to a certain number of Shrines to receive a Knowledge Point.
Temples
Iconic areas of Japanese culture. Find Lost Pages within these Shrines to receive a Knowledge Point.
Kofun
Rare underground tombs that test your knowledge and puzzle-solving abilities and reward unique pieces of Legendary gear at the end.
Naoe Exclusive Knowledge Activities
Kuji-kiri
Tranquil meditation spots where Naoe can take a moment to breathe, receiving a Knowledge Point if she is able to successfully meditate.
Hidden Trails
High-octane platforming sections where Naoe must use all of her shinobi tricks to reach a chest at the end containing special Assassin-themed loot and a Knowledge Point.
Yasuke Exclusive Knowledge Activities
Kata
Yasuke can train with masters of samurai armaments in these areas, bettering his skills in precise rhythm mini-games to earn a Knowledge Point.
Horse Archery
Specialised arenas where Yasuke must hit certain targets with his Yumi Bow while on horseback. Achieving Legend status on each will award a new Mount.
