Diablo 4 Tempering Guide: How the System Works
What is Tempering in Diablo 4?
Tempering in Diablo 4 is a gear upgrade system that grants massive early and late game improvements. It allows items of Rare, Legendary, and Unique rarities to add Affixes using Temper Manuals. This allows players to customize their characters to suit their game style and improve their specific builds.
Diablo 4 Tempering Item Caps
It's important to consider that while the bonuses for a Temper stack, they do, however, have a hard cap and limit. Some Tempers will not let you go beyond 100% of the said bonus. Players should plan their builds strategically to not waste a Tempering slot.

How to Use the Tempering System in Diablo 4
After acquiring your first Temper Manual, right-click on the item to learn it, and it will show up on your Tempering Recipes in the Codex of Power. Players can then visit the Blacksmith to start Tempering. First, choose the item you want to temper with. Once that's done, choose the Temper Manual you want to attach to the item and confirm tempering. Moreso, Tempered Affixes can also be upgraded into Greater Affixes. Do note that successfully tempering an item will deplete 1 Temper Charge. Additionally, items can only be tempered under their own category. (Example: Weapons can only attach Weapons and Offensive Temper Manuals).
The following categories are as follows:
- Weapons: Weapons
- Offensive: Weapons, Amulets, Gloves, and Rings
- Defensive: Shields, Helms, Chest, Pants, and Amulets
- Utility: Shields, Helms, Chest, Pants, Amulets, Gloves, and Boots
- Mobility: Amulets and Boots
- Resource: Amulets and Rings
Diablo 4 Understanding Temper Manuals
To temper an item or equipment, players are required to have Temper Manuals. These Temper Manuals contain a fixed set of Affixes and come in 3 rarities: Magic, Rare, and Legendary. Do note that the rarity of a Manual does not affect the set of affixes. Instead, it affects the range of bonus stats you can apply. Additionally, some Temper Manuals can be used by all of the available classes, but in most cases are class-specific, which means they are tied to a certain class and cannot be used by the others.

Tempering Costs and Reroll Charges in Diablo 4
While tempering an item does not cost Gold, it does require a few materials. The amount and materials required are dependent on how powerful the item is. Each tempering will require a Veiled Crystal, Forgotten Soul, and one of the following, depending on what item you are tempering: Baleful Fragments, Coiling Wards, or Abstruse Sigils. Do note that rerolling a bonus will require the same amount of materials.
Diablo 4 Rerolling and Temper Charges
After a player has tempered an item, you'll automatically see its effect. Players will then have the ability to reroll the item if the range or value does not satisfy their needs. Do note that rerolling consumes a Temper Charge. Once a player has used up all of an item's tempering charge, players can restore a charge by using a Scroll of Restoration. This allows players to regain lost charges and reroll again to try to get a better range value or change the Temper altogether. Additionally, items with Greater Affixes provide an extra Tempering Charge per Greater Affix.
