Undead Bone Shard is a Consumable in Dark Souls 3. Undead Bone Shards are valuable items that grant players a boost to their Estus Flasks, increasing the amount of HP restored by regular Estus Flasks or FP restored by Ashen Estus Flasks. Burning these shards at a bonfire strengthens your flasks, making them more effective and vital for your ventures in Dark Souls 3.
Undead Bone Shard Dark Souls 3 Usage
- Burn in the Firelink Shrine bonfire to increase the amount of HP/FP recovered when using the Estus Flask and Ashen Estus Flask.
- Trade with Picklepum The Crow for the Porcine Shield in return.
Undead Bone Shard Dark Souls 3 Locations
- Undead Settlement - Starting at the Dilapidated Bridge bonfire, travel near the white birch tree where the giant fires arrows. To the right of this tree is a platform you can jump to with the Undead Bone Shard on a dead body.
- Farron Keep - From the Keep Ruins bonfire, head down the walkway towards the door that opens once you light the three bonfires. Before reaching the door head to the right and look for a tower full of slugs. It is in the center of that tower. Video location (fextralife video starting at 1h 22m 27s)
- Cathedral of the Deep - From the Cleansing Chapel bonfire, head out and through the graveyard. Head across the bridge and up some stairs past a Grave Warden and to the right. The shard is on a tombstone that is laying out over a gap, near a white birch tree.
- Catacombs of Carthus - From the Abyss Watchers bonfire go down the stairs and to the right side of the ledge overlooking the level. Drop down on the series of platforms below, be careful of the two archer skeletons. Head through the doorway and kill the skeleton with a hat immediately to the right. This will cause the first Skeleton Ball, to break on impact with the wall and reveal a shard.
- Smouldering Lake - Kill the Carthus Sandworm.
- Smouldering Lake - From the Demon Ruins bonfire, head down the stairs into the long room filled with floating fireballs and demons. Head left towards the far end of the room past the enemies and the boneshard is located near the bodies of dead demons. Beware of a Fire Slime that will attempt to fall on you. (Video)
- Irithyll of the Boreal Valley - Starting at the Church of Yorshka bonfire, go down the hallway stairs, and go right along the cliff. The Undead Bone shard is located behind the large tombstone at the end of this path. (Video)
- Profaned Capital - After you fight the first Gargoyle of the area, it will be on the corpse of Laddersmith Gilligan next to the bonfire.
- Lothric Castle - Starting at the Dragon Barracks bonfire, go up the stairs and to the bridge where the two dragons are. Run almost all the way across the bridge and drop off at the end. The Undead Bone Shard is underneath the bridge.
- Grand Archives - Once you reach the rooftop area, head down the ladder and straight ahead until you can turn left to head up the rooftops. Head up and take a right and remain along the top until you can jump back into the archives. Defeat the Lothric knight and Thralls, walk past the wax pool, and find it on a corpse sitting in a chair. There is a ladder you can kick down here that will go back into the archive area where you will find the corpse of Orbeck (if you buy all his spells/defeat the Princes), and contains a number of Priests. It is also near the doorway that leads to the 3 NPC Hunters.

Dark Souls 3 Undead Bone Shard Notes & Tips
- Upon burning all of the Undead Bone Shards, you will unlock the Achievement "Ultimate Bonfire"
- Healing Scaling for the upgrades of Estus & Ashen Estus: While Dark Souls 3 does not explicitly detail the growth of the Estus Flask, the restorative values scale according to a fixed, diminishing returns progression rather than a constant linear rate. A base (+0) Estus Flask restores 250 HP, and a base (+0) Ashen Estus Flask restores 80 FP. Burning Undead Bone Shards at the Firelink Shrine bonfire increases these values at predetermined intervals, with early upgrades providing substantial boosts and later upgrades providing smaller, incremental gains. By the time the flask reaches the maximum level of +10, a standard Estus Flask restores exactly 600 HP, while an Ashen Estus Flask restores exactly 200 FP. These values are flat and independent of the Ashen One's Vigor or Attunement stats, meaning the healing amount remains consistent regardless of the player's maximum health or focus pools.
- Synergistic Equipment: The restorative power of a fully upgraded (+10) Estus Flask can be further enhanced by equipping the Estus Ring or Ashen Estus Ring. Dark Souls 3 calculates these ring bonuses as a multiplicative 20% increase applied to the flask's current restorative value. A +10 Estus Flask, which normally restores 600 HP, is amplified to 720 HP when the Estus Ring is equipped. Similarly, a +10 Ashen Estus Flask is boosted from 200 FP to 240 FP with the Ashen Estus Ring equipped. Because these rings provide a percentage-based bonus to the flask's flat healing values, their utility increases in absolute terms as the Ashen One upgrades their Estus Flask, making them highly effective tools for maximizing recovery efficiency throughout the playthrough.
- Trade Restrictions: Undead Bone Shards cannot be traded. If an Ashen One attempts to drop an Undead Bone Shard, the game engine prevents the item from appearing in the world of any summoned phantoms or invaders. Because these shards are classified as essential progression items, they are strictly tied to the host's world state and cannot be transferred between characters.
