Conversations in Baldur's Gate 3 get a lot more interesting when you have the ability to speak with a whole other kind of being: animals. Speaking with animals can open (or close) a range of doors for you along your adventure across the Sword Coast.

From wacky, chaotic conversations with squirrels to uncovering secrets with Faerun's strongest enemy (the dreaded Frog), you'll be tripping over yourself to get your hands on this ability. Thankfully, it's not too difficult if you know where to look and have the right members in your party.

How To Speak With Animals

You can speak with any animal creature through the use of these methods:

With any of these methods in hand, you can freely speak with any animal like you would a person. Some will have dialogue options, others will merely give you a line or two before dismissing you.

The Speak with Animal Spell can be learned by these classes:

  • Barbarian (Wildheart only)
  • Bard
  • Druid
  • Ranger
  • Paladin (Oath of the Ancients only)
  • Warlock (Beast Speech invocation only; does not expend spell slot)

Both it and the Potion of Animal Speaking last until your next Long Rest.

The Potion of Animal Speaking is generally sold by random merchants. It is currently unknown if this will eventually be a craftable item.

Important Animal Conversations

There are a few animals worth noting to speak with in your early encounters. While this does not nearly encompass all the notable conversations, these will open opportunities for new areas and possible companions.

Scratch, the dog

Found near the Blighted Village. Can be recruited to the camp and pet.

Owlbear Cub

Found first in the Owlbear Cave between the Blighted Village and Druid's Grove. Later encountered and can be recruited at the Goblin's Camp.

Tuffet, the Bear

Found snoozing on the elevator in the Druid's Grove. Allows use of the elevator.

Bored Cow

One of the oxen in the Druid's Grove will point out a small treasure in the haystack.

Territorial Squirrel

Near the entrance of the Druid's Grove and on the level with the front gate's lever mechanism (up the ladder), there is a tree guarded by this squirrel. Can convince the squirrel to show you a treasure hoard.

Deep Rothe (Grymforge)

Found clearing rubble in Grymforge. Allows easier access to deeper Grymforge and the Adamantine Forge.

Addled Frog

Found in the Fetid Bog near the River Teahouse (Auntie Ethel's home). Tells you secrets about Auntie Ethel and leads you to treasure if she's defeated.
