Here's how the largest independent SSP got built: In 2021, they acquired SpotX (now part of Magnite) for $1.17B. At the time, the SSP market was still on the back foot with streaming. Magnite was already ahead of it. By the end of 2025, $714M ARR with CTV growing 17% year on year. That same instinct is now pointing at gaming. CTV is the hottest topic in ad tech for 2026. Digital audio is also gaining traction, and both are worthy of the attention they're receiving. But there's a bigger story here... 🎮 ~65% of the US population are gamers 🎮 ~87% of Gen Z are gamers 🎮 2.5x more attention than social and open web 💰 Less than 5% of media investment That gap is already starting to close. Garrett McGrath liked thisGarrett McGrath liked thisA few sharp takeaways from Chris Kane’s kickoff at the Jounce SPO Summit this morning: The premium web is facing real headwinds and they’re not cyclical. We’re seeing structural shifts: • The open web is consolidating • Buying behavior is moving toward a default “off” mentality • Traffic is declining overall — but concentrating among a smaller set of scaled, trusted publishers • And demand itself is concentrating — with a handful of platforms controlling a large share of spend, even on the open web That last point really stood out. Even as traffic shrinks, a growing share is flowing to the top 100 “bellwether” publishers, including Mediavine. Scale, signal, and trust are becoming even more important in a constrained environment. And on the demand side, a disproportionate share is flowing to known, trusted partners. That dynamic is a big part of why we’re continuing to expand who we represent — it’s critical not just for our business, but for the long-term health of a diverse web. The implication is pretty clear: this isn’t about waiting for things to bounce back. The model itself is changing. Looking forward to Amanda Martin’s talk later today on how publishers are adapting — specifically the shift away from commoditized, AI-answerable content and toward truly irreplaceable experiences. That feels like where the next wave of value will be created.

Our CEO Erik Svilich went (his first time attending) and kept telling me how amazing it was. Sounded like one of those events that reminds you why this industry is so exciting to be a part of. He spent a lot of time talking to folks about what we’re building at Encypher and came back energized by the level of interest and curiosity. Always a good sign when you leave something like that with more ideas than you came in with. Credit to the Prebid team for putting together a wonderful event.

Increasing ad spend does not fix weak fundamentals. It magnifies them. If conversion rate is unstable, more traffic makes instability worse. If targeting is loose, more budget accelerates waste. If messaging is unclear, scaling amplifies confusion. Before we scale any account, we ask one question: Would we confidently double this tomorrow? If the answer is no, the system is not ready.
