Oblivion Remastered Wiki Guide: Everything about Oblivion Remastered

What is Elder Scrolls Oblivion Remastered?

Elder Scrolls Oblivion Remastered is a refreshed version of the classic role-playing game The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, first released in 2006. This remaster aims to bring updated visuals and improved gameplay mechanics to modern platforms, appealing to both new players and long-time fans.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is a cornerstone of the RPG genre, known for its expansive open world and deep narrative, released initially for Xbox 360 and PC, with a later port to PS3 in 2007. As the fourth installment in The Elder Scrolls series, it immerses players in a richly detailed world where they rise from a prisoner to a hero tasked with thwarting a demonic invasion led by the Daedric Prince Mehrunes Dagon.

With its expansive landscapes, dynamic NPC interactions, and deep lore, Oblivion offers unparalleled freedom to explore, quest, and shape your character’s destiny through skills, factions, and moral choices. The game includes iconic DLCs like Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine, expanding the adventure with new realms and stories. Renowned for its groundbreaking AI and lush visuals at the time, Oblivion remains a beloved classic, setting the stage for modern RPGs and continuing to captivate players with its timeless charm.

Set in the lush, sprawling province of Cyrodiil within the Elder Scrolls universe, Oblivion invites players to embark on an epic journey as a prisoner-turned-hero, tasked with stopping a demonic invasion by the Daedric Prince Mehrunes Dagon. Renowned for its immersive open world and deep gameplay systems, it remains a cornerstone of the RPG genre.

Open-World Fantasy in Elder Scrolls Oblivion

Oblivion’s open world is a breathtakingly diverse and dynamic rendition of Cyrodiil, featuring rolling hills, dense forests, towering mountains, and bustling cities like the Imperial City. The world is handcrafted yet feels alive, with NPCs following daily schedules powered by Bethesda’s Radiant AI system, making interactions unpredictable and organic. Players can explore:

  • Nine major cities, each with unique architecture and culture, such as Anvil’s coastal charm or Chorrol’s wooded serenity.
  • Hundreds of locations, including dungeons, ruins, forts, and Oblivion Gates—portals to fiery Daedric realms.
Seamless exploration, with no loading screens across the open world, encouraging discovery of hidden quests, artifacts, and lore.
  • Dynamic quests from factions like the Mages Guild, Thieves Guild, Dark Brotherhood, and Fighters Guild, blending scripted narratives with emergent gameplay. The inclusion of DLCs like Shivering Isles adds a surreal new realm ruled by the Daedric Prince Sheogorath, expanding the world with unique landscapes and stories.

Players can choose from 10 distinct races, each with unique bonuses and abilities. Players can choose from 21 premade classes (e.g., Warrior, Mage, Thief) or create a custom class by selecting major skills. There are 21 skills (e.g., Blade, Destruction, Sneak) level up through use, shaping character progression. 13 birthsigns grant unique bonuses or abilities, like the Warrior’s strength boost or the Mage’s magicka increase.

New Gameplay Features in Oblivion Remastered

  • In the Deluxe Edition, you will be able to complete two new questlines, which are named "Burning Trail" and "A Wound in Time." These two quests will reward players who finish these storylines with new armor, such as the Akatosh set and pieces inspired by Mehrunes Dagon's equipment.
  • The Clairvoyance skill from The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has now been added to Oblivion Remastered. You will now be able to briefly see a line of energy that leads to the next objective, making it easier for you to explore Cyrodiil.
  • Some races with reused voice actors in the original game will now have new voice actors, some with even new lines. This adds a layer of freshness and a more immersive experience as you play your unique character in Oblivion Remastered.
  • Gender-based differences have now been changed to reflect based on the player's chosen origin. The body types have been changed to Type 1 and Type 2 and have become a non-factor in the player's stats, making it a flexible option for players wanting to roleplay in Cyrodiil.
  • Beard and mustache styles have been added in Oblivion Remastered, allowing players to have a more personalized customization experience during Character Creation.

Bug Fixes in TES IV: Oblivion Remastered

  • The infamous Scroll duplication glitch has been patched.
  • Paint brushes were used as ledges to reach unreachable places in the original game, which is now impossible to do in Oblivion Remastered.

Quality of Life Changes and Rebalances

  • Once over-encumbered, players are now able to walk instead of being unable to move. Players, however, still cannot sprint once over-encumbered.
  • Skill points can now be distributed freely once the player levels up, making it easier for players to build their character however they want to play the game.
  • Game physics has been updated so that it would feel more realistic, such as being slower when moving uphill and slowly being immersed when standing on water.
  • Changing difficulty will now have five presets instead of a slider.
  • Opening the loot menu with an arrow nocked in your bow will now make the arrow automatically go back to your quiver.
  • Containers will now have an indicator showing if they are empty.
  • You will now gain experience from using minor skills.
  • Plants are now guaranteed to be harvested.
  • Smaller plants are now easier to pick up, as it is not required to directly hover over their model to interact with them.
  • Third-person view and controls have been improved.
  • The Lord Birthsign has been rebalanced — you no longer get the "Blood of the North" lesser power along with a permanent 25% weakness to Fire. Instead, you now get +15 Armor Rating and 15% Magic resistance.
  • There is now a Field of View (FOV) slider that can be adjusted by the player for both first-person and third-person view.
  • Enemies scaling to the player's level have been rebalanced, as the difficulty spike is much less aggressive compared to the original game.

HUD Changes

  • A filter has been added while viewing the World Map — you may now choose which categories will show up if you are looking for something on the map.
  • The Stealth indicator has been improved, as it now shows if you are visible to an enemy or if you are close to being detected.
  • An outline on the focused item will now show, making it easier for players to distinguish which item will be picked up.
  • When persuading an NPC, after finding out what they prefer, options will now have a color highlight depending on the NPC's disposition.
  • Some tutorial pop-ups are now shown in the corner of the player's screen, allowing for a smoother gameplay experience.
  • The compass will now show the distance between your character and markers, such as objectives, cities, or a pinned location.

Oblivion Remastered Release and Availability

Oblivion Remastered was both announced and released on April 22, 2025, as part of a surprise reveal during Bethesda’s official livestream. The game is available immediately across multiple platforms, including PC via Steam, Xbox Series X|S via the Xbox Game Pass, PlayStation 5, and Cloud Gaming through Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. It is also included with Xbox Game Pass for subscribers on PC and Xbox Series X|S.

The remastered edition is not available on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, or Nintendo Switch, as the game has been developed with current-generation hardware in mind.

A Physical Deluxe Edition has been confirmed for Xbox Series X|S, which includes the game along with exclusive digital content. As of now, there are no confirmed physical editions for either PlayStation 5 or PC.

The Oblivion Remastered Editions

The Oblivion Remastered release comes in multiple editions, each offering different levels of content. The Standard Edition, priced at $49.99, includes the base game along with all official DLCs released for the original game. This means players will have access to fan-favorite expansions like Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine, as well as smaller content packs such as The Thieves Den, Wizard’s Tower, Vile Lair, Mehrunes’ Razor, and even the infamous Horse Armor Pack. Additionally, this edition includes the full suite of graphical and gameplay enhancements brought by the remaster.

The Deluxe Edition, typically priced around $59.99 (depending on the platform), builds on the Standard Edition with exclusive digital bonuses. These include Akatosh- and Mehrunes Dagon-themed armor and weapon sets—plus matching horse armor—as well as a digital artbook and soundtrack app. For Xbox players, Oblivion Remastered is also included with Xbox Game Pass on both PC and Series X|S consoles. However, Deluxe upgrades can still be purchased separately if desired.

Combat Changes in Oblivion Remastered

Aside from the visual improvements in Oblivion Remastered, the game also delivers changes in terms of Combat to improve the player's overall experience. One notable change is related to spell users, wherein they can no longer cast Spells without blocking. You can view other combat changes below:

  • Your character's HP will now regenerate when not in combat, with the recovery rate depending on Endurance.
  • Your character can only be staggered once you block without Stamina.
  • Bound weapons will no longer vanish if players sheathe them before the duration of the spell ends.
  • Auto-aim has been added, with players being able to turn it on or off.
  • Players are now unable to cast spells while blocking.
  • Attacks that hit an enemy's head will now deal additional damage.

Visual and Technical Upgrades

The remaster introduces a significant visual overhaul thanks to the power of Unreal Engine 5. This includes high-resolution textures, revamped models, and modern lighting systems that bring new life to environments like the Imperial City and the chaotic Oblivion Gates. Character models have been rebuilt with more natural faces and smoother animations, correcting one of the most criticized aspects of the original release.

All of this runs smoothly across platforms. On Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5, the game targets a consistent 60 FPS, while PC players can achieve even higher frame rates based on their hardware. Other technical improvements include support for 4K and ultrawide monitors, enhanced particle effects, and a redesigned audio system with cleaner sound, improved ambient effects, and additional voice lines. The result is a game that looks and sounds far more modern, while still preserving the charm of the original.

Gameplay Modernization

While Oblivion Remastered retains its core RPG systems, it introduces several modernized mechanics. Combat, for instance, now features Souls-like blocking, allowing for reactive defense and counterattacks, while archery has been completely revamped for smoother aiming and better feedback. New mechanics like dodging and sprinting have also been added, making stamina a more dynamic part of gameplay. Stamina usage now ties into your Endurance and Willpower attributes, influencing how you manage movement and actions during combat.

Stealth has also received a usability boost with highlighted detection icons, making it easier to tell when you’re hidden or spotted. These icons enhance clarity during sneaking, which pairs well with perks like silent movement or sneak attack multipliers. The third-person camera has been overhauled as well, offering better controls and animations to make it feel as responsive as first-person view.

Oblivion Remastered Content and DLC

Oblivion Remastered includes all official downloadable content and expansions released for the original game in both the Standard and Deluxe Editions. This includes the full expansion Shivering Isles, which introduces a new Daedric realm and questline, and Knights of the Nine, a storyline centered around a religious order and the recovery of sacred relics.

26 homepage oblivion remastered wiki guide 600px

Additional smaller DLC packs are also included: The Thieves Den, Wizard’s Tower, Vile Lair, Mehrunes’ Razor, Horse Armor, Spell Tomes, and The Orrery. These add various gameplay elements such as new items, player housing, and side objectives, but do not alter the main narrative structure.

No new quests, areas, or skills have been added in the remastered version. The Deluxe Edition includes exclusive digital content such as Akatosh- and Mehrunes Dagon-themed armor, weapons, and horse armor. These items are cosmetic and gameplay-enhancing but do not include additional story content.

All original dialogue from the base game and DLCs has been retained. New voice lines have been added to supplement NPC interactions, with the stated goal of improving audio consistency and immersion while keeping the overall structure and tone of the original intact.

Oblivion Remastered Skill System Overview

The Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion Remastered retains the original set of 21 skills, organized into three specializations:

  • Combat: Armorer, Athletics, Blade, Block, Blunt, Hand-to-Hand, Heavy Armor
  • Magic: Alchemy, Alteration, Conjuration, Destruction, Illusion, Mysticism, Restoration
  • Stealth: Acrobatics, Light Armor, Marksman, Mercantile, Security, Sneak, Speechcraft

Each skill is governed by one of the game’s eight attributes: Strength, Endurance, Intelligence, Willpower, Agility, Speed, Personality, or Luck. Skill progression follows the same structure as the original game, ranging from level 5 to 100. New abilities and gameplay perks are unlocked at the following thresholds: Apprentice (25), Journeyman (50), Expert (75), and Master (100).

The core mechanics for advancing skills remain unchanged. Skills increase through use, attacking with swords improves Blade, casting Destruction spells increases Destruction, repairing gear raises Armorer, and so on. Perks tied to mastery levels, such as paralyzing arrows in Marksman at Master level, are fully preserved.

While the skills themselves have not been structurally altered or replaced, several have been updated in how they are experienced through gameplay refinements:

  • Block now benefits from a reactive, timing-based combat system, aligning with perks like Master-level counterattacks.
  • Marksman has improved aiming accuracy and arrow physics, supporting features like zooming (Expert) and target paralysis (Master).
  • Sneak includes new visual detection indicators, making it easier to assess visibility during stealth. The effectiveness of stealth-related perks remains consistent.
  • Athletics is now tied to a sprint mechanic, reducing stamina costs as the skill increases and maintaining perks like fatigue regeneration (Journeyman).
  • Acrobatics integrates a dodge mechanic, complementing existing perks such as dodge rolls (Journeyman) and fall damage immunity (Master).

These enhancements adjust the way players interact with certain skills but do not affect their underlying progression, perk unlocks, or balance. The result is a system that maintains compatibility with the original design while aligning with updated control schemes and modern gameplay standards.

The expansion introduces a unique storyline separate from the main quest, featuring new quests, enemies, dungeons, and locations across Cyrodiil. Players can embark on a righteous crusade, assemble a band of holy warriors, and face moral challenges that test their virtue and faith.
