Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition review

System: Switch 2
Release date: June 9, 2026
Developer: Monolith Soft
Publisher: Nintendo

It’s well-known that Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition stands strong as one of the greatest JRPGs of all time. It’s got a great story, fantastic voice acting, memorable music, well-written characters, an interesting battle system that may remind some of an MMO, and much more – in other words, it’s an absolute must-play if you like JRPGs at all. And all of this was true back when the Definitive Edition first released for Nintendo Switch in 2020 as well. Now Nintendo has released a Switch 2 Edition for Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition, promising better performance and visuals while simultaneously giving the game an incredibly wordy title. For the most part, this upgrade is a hit – but it does struggle in a few specific areas, which we’ll go into detail on in a moment.

Best Switch 1 games to replay on Switch 2

It’s no secret that brand-new games are taking longer and longer to develop – both because they’re becoming more ambitious and because they render in much higher resolutions, which warrants higher-quality assets. In between brand-new Nintendo Switch 2 releases, one of the console’s main draws is to replay Switch 1 games with higher frame rates, resolutions, or both.

Of course, not every game has a dedicated Nintendo Switch 2 patch yet – we’re hoping to see many, many more in the near future. In the meantime, here are some Nintendo Switch 1 games that play great on Switch 2 – which makes them great candidates for a replay.

Another set of backwards compatibility fixes for Nintendo Switch games on Switch 2 are now available.

There aren’t as many heavy hitters this time around, but it’s still a solid batch. Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove is the biggest name out of the bunch – previously, Nintendo said that players may encounter audio issues in some areas.

The full list of June 2026 backwards compatibility fixes is as follows:

Pikmin 4 sound effects

In a post on Nintendo’s recruitment site, Pikmin 4 sound design lead Taiyo Furukawa reflected on his work for the game’s sound effects.

This entry in the series shifts the camera to put players closer to the action, and that required a new type of approach. For example, we previously heard from Nintendo about how players can clearly hear Pikmin’s voices and footsteps loud and clear when the camera is close to the ground.

Good-Feel is one of Nintendo’s most trusted development partners. In 2008, the studio was tasked with creating Wario Land: Shake It as the very first game it made specifically for the Big N. It received good reviews, and Good-Feel then followed up with Kirby’s Epic Yarn in 2010 and Yoshi’s Woolly World in 2015.

Since then, however, its track record has been a little bit inconsistent. Both of its 2019 releases, Yoshi’s Crafted World and Kirby’s Extra Epic Yarn, were met with mixed reception. And although Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is generally well-liked, a lot of Good-Feel’s recent releases are missing something that made their games so special in the first place: the music.
