Locked chests are a common sight in RPGs and often contain useful rewards, rare items, or valuable resources. Having a lockpick on hand can open up plenty of opportunities that would otherwise remain inaccessible. Out of all the RPGs out there, Gothic 1 Remake might have one of the most brutal lockpicking systems.

There is very little room for error during the early stages of the game, and some locked chests can take anywhere from 10 to 15 minutes to figure out and successfully open. The guide below explains how lockpicking works in Gothic 1 Remake and where you can find more lockpicks when you inevitably run out.

After reaching the Old Camp, players can start exploring the various huts occupied by Diggers and members of the Brotherhood. Many of these huts contain personal belongings, useful loot, and most importantly, locked chests waiting to be opened.

If you already have a lockpick, interact with one of these chests to get familiar with the lockpicking system. Depending on the difficulty of the lock, you will be presented with five or six sliders. Each slider contains a pin that moves depending on the direction in which the slider is pushed.

Your objective is to align every slider so that the pin sits directly in the center. When positioned correctly, the pin will turn bronze, indicating that the slider is in the correct position, which is always the middle. While this sounds simple on paper, the reality is far more complicated.

The biggest challenge comes from the fact that not every slider operates independently. In many cases, moving one slider will also move one or more additional sliders. Sometimes they will move in the same direction, while other times they will shift in the opposite direction entirely. Because of this, your first task should be understanding which sliders are linked together before attempting to solve the lock.

To make matters worse, the early stages of the game are extremely unforgiving. At the beginning, you can only make a single mistake. The next failed attempt will usually result in a broken lockpick, forcing you to start over. Because of this, it is highly recommended that you save your game before attempting any locked chests.

As your lockpicking skill improves later in the game, the system becomes significantly more forgiving. Higher lockpicking levels allow for additional mistakes before a lockpick breaks, making difficult locks much easier to manage.

The earliest you can improve your Lockpicking skill is by talking to Fingers near the Arena area. He asks for 100 Ore Nuggets and 10 Skill Points, and going through with this will make it so that you can make up to 4 mistakes. You also won't lose progress if a lockpick breaks.

Another important detail to keep in mind is that a slider may appear isolated at first but still be affected by another slider elsewhere in the lock. For example, you might move the final slider into the correct position only to discover that adjusting a different slider later causes it to shift again. This means you constantly need to pay attention to how every component interacts with the rest of the mechanism.

The best approach is to work through the sliders one at a time, gradually moving each pin toward the center while observing how the other sliders react. If a pin reaches the edge and can no longer move in the desired direction, switch your focus to another slider before returning to it later.

While the system can often feel frustrating, especially when the rewards inside the chest are mediocre, successfully opening a lock preserves your lockpick. This allows you to continue opening additional chests without consuming extra resources. Because of this, improving your lockpicking skill whenever possible is highly recommended.

Lockpicks can be found throughout the Colony inside chests, hidden stashes, and various containers scattered around the world. As you explore new areas, make sure to search abandoned camps, huts, and secluded corners, as many of them contain useful supplies, including additional lockpicks.

The easiest way to stock up early, however, is by visiting Fisk in the Old Camp. Fisk can be found sitting outside his house in the marketplace area and sells up to 12 lockpicks. Each lockpick costs 15 Ore Nuggets, making him the most reliable source if you plan on opening multiple chests. You can also purchase the lockpicks from Mordrag or Dexter, who are also near the marketplace.
