Sleeping is an important part of Gothic 1 Remake. Not only does it allow players to recover and prepare for their next adventure, but it also serves as one of the easiest ways to pass time. Unfortunately, finding a place to sleep is not as straightforward as you might expect.

During the early hours of this open-world RPG, most beds will display a red marker, indicating that they belong to someone else. This prevents players from using them freely and can make it seem like there is nowhere to rest. Since Gothic 1 Remake offers very little guidance, you are largely left to figure things out on your own. Thankfully, there is a simple solution.

Gothic 1 Remake doesn't hand players a map right away. Find out where to buy maps and the quickest way to navigate the Colony.

Once the opening scenes are over and the game finally hands control over to you, your first major goal is reaching the Old Camp. Thankfully, getting there is fairly simple. Follow the main path leading away from the starting area and continue through the Colony. Before long, you'll arrive at the Old Camp, which serves as one of the first major hubs in the game.

After entering the camp, take some time to explore. You'll notice numerous huts scattered throughout the area where Diggers and members of the Brotherhood spend their time. Most of the beds you encounter here will be marked as belonging to someone else, making them unavailable for regular use.

Keep walking around the camp and look for an open entrance that has a ladder on the left side leading up toward the smithy. Inside this small area, you'll find two beds. One of them is marked as owned, while the other does not have the red ownership marker. This unclaimed bed is available for use whenever you want.

Once you've discovered it, you essentially have a free bed that can be used throughout your stay in the Old Camp. Whenever you need to pass time, heal up, or skip to a different part of the day, simply return and use it.

Additionally, you can make your way to the Arena area and talk to Guy, who will tell you that there is a hut that has just been cleared out next to the Arena. It has a red awning out front, which makes it very easy to spot, and you can use this bed at any time.

That said, these are not your only options. You can technically sleep in beds owned by NPCs as well. While the game makes it sound like this should lead to serious consequences, the residents of the Colony are surprisingly forgiving. In my experience, most NPCs will simply warn you and move on with their day rather than escalating the situation.

I even experimented by lockpicking chests with NPCs standing nearby and found that they rarely reacted in any meaningful way.

The same logic applies to sleeping. Even if someone tells you to get out of their hut, you can often wait for them to leave or simply use a nearby bed anyway. Since many NPCs follow daily schedules and spend large portions of the day away from their homes, it's surprisingly easy to take advantage of an empty bed and sleep until morning without any real trouble.

Because of this, finding your own bed is convenient but not strictly necessary. Still, having a guaranteed place to sleep makes managing time much easier, especially during the early stages of the game when resources and safe locations are limited.
