After a year of significant reductions in the federal workforce, the administration is now ramping up hiring again- but under new rules designed to give the White House more influence over who is hired and retained. Regardless of where you sit politically, this moment highlights something those of us in executive search see every day: Talent strategy is strategy Who you hire, how you evaluate performance, and how much independence leaders have to make decisions fundamentally shapes how organizations operate. Having worked both inside large global companies and now as a Partner at a women-owned executive search firm, I’ve seen how leadership priorities quickly translate into hiring priorities. When leadership changes, the definition of “the right talent” often changes too. Three reflections this article sparked for me: 1️⃣ Workforce design is rarely static. Organizations often move between contraction and expansion depending on strategy shifts. 2️⃣ Hiring criteria always reflect leadership priorities. Whether in government or business, the competencies leaders value determine who gets hired and promoted. 3️⃣ Talent decisions shape culture faster than almost anything else. Who you bring in (and who leaves) ultimately determines how an organization executes. At 24, I had just lost my job and was trying to figure out what came next. My dad helped me land a temporary role at Challenger (mainly because I was unfortunately “off his payroll” at that point 🙄 ). At the time, it was simply a paycheck. I had no idea it would turn into a 20-year career and a calling. Over the past two decades, I have had the privilege of working with incredible organizations and leaders during some of the most pivotal moments in their companies’ histories. Outplacement is often misunderstood. It is not just about helping someone find their next job. At its best, it is about helping companies navigate difficult transitions with dignity and helping individuals move forward with confidence and hope. Being trusted to play a small role in those moments has been one of the greatest honors of my career. Along the way, I have had the chance to partner with extraordinary HR leaders, CEOs, and teams who truly care about their people. Your trust and partnership have shaped how I think about leadership, business, and humanity in the workplace. The difference between Talent Acquisition vs Staffing Agencies? Reactivity vs Proactivity TA is great if used correctly, but 99% of companies out there don't understand how to utilize them. High quantity positions that can afford to be reactive are phenomenal for TA to work on and fill. High level, niche roles can start to be worked on by TA for a period of time (dependent on urgency level), but those really should be given to a staffing agency that specializes in that sector and ideally has the relationships to identify the ideal candidate quickly and efficiently. In summary- "saving cost" by avoiding agencies can be doable, but don't shoot yourself in the foot by sending your TA team to war with a butter knife as they just flat out don't have the resources or head start that agency recruiters have! #staffing #recruiting
