Aaron Morrison liked thisAaron Morrison liked thisLast February, a spinal cord condition put my ability to walk in question. Today I'm back on my feet, and my one-year scan came back clean. I don't usually post personal news here, but enough people have asked that it's worth sharing. A spinal dural AV fistula in early 2025 cost me sensation and strength from the waist down. I was completely paralyzed below the waist. Sixteen months of physical therapy later, I'm walking, standing on my own, and most days getting around without a cane. The recovery continues, and so do I. I'm grateful to be back to the work I care about. Through Strategy & The Machine, I help small businesses in Las Cruces and El Paso use AI in practical, no-hype ways, and I also practice as a licensed mental health counselor at Nexus Counseling. Outside of work, I still run weekly tabletop gaming groups here in town. There is a quiet calm that comes with feeling like you are where you are supposed to be... and I feel it. The last year and a half was a nightmare. Getting my family through each month felt like a magic trick. It was an incredible amount of work, and ever more sacrifice. But it would be a bold face lie to say that I did all that by myself. SO many of you played an invaluable role to get us here, and I wanted to take a moment to thank some of you. This is NOT an exhaustive list, and I am sorry if there is anyone who feels like they were left out. There are SO many people I could thank, and its just hard to hold everyone in my head all at once. Also there is a maximum number of mentions on a LinkedIn post 😅 This also doesn't cover my new incredible team at Apple Arcade. Recruiting Tip of the Week: Do Your Research! Want a simple way to stand out with a recruiter? Do your homework! It sounds obvious, but you’d be surprised how many candidates come into interviews knowing little more than the job description. As a recruiter, I’ve had countless conversations with applicants who couldn’t explain what the company actually does, who it serves, or how the role they’re applying for contributes to the bigger picture. That’s a missed opportunity. Taking time to research a company isn’t just about impressing your interviewer. It’s about positioning yourself as someone who is thoughtful, intentional, and genuinely interested. When you understand the business, you ask better questions. You connect your experience more clearly to their needs. You show that you’re not just looking for any job. You’re interested in this one! And let’s be realistic for a moment. The job market can be tough, and many candidates are applying broadly. But how many interviews are you actually landing each week? Two? Maybe three? That’s a small number of high-value opportunities. So why not maximize them? A little preparation goes a long way. Spend time on the company’s website. Read recent news. Understand their products, services, and customers. Think about how your role would make an impact. Because at the end of the day, hiring managers are asking themselves one simple question: Why should we hire someone who hasn’t taken the time to understand what we do? And just as importantly, you should be asking yourself: Why would I want to work somewhere I know nothing about? Do your research. It’s one of the easiest ways to separate yourself from the crowd. And one of the most overlooked. How do you feel about researching a company before interviews? Necessary?

One thing I've learned through working with Hiring Managers at Wargaming is that successful hiring rarely happens when recruitment is treated as a simple handoff. We often talk about hiring processes as if they are strictly defined from the very beginning. In reality, the strongest hiring outcomes come from continuous collaboration between Talent Acquisition and Hiring Managers. What stood out to me was how engaged Hiring Managers are throughout the entire process. They don't just define requirements and step away. They actively participate in discussions, share the reasoning behind their expectations, and remain open to adjusting priorities when market realities or team needs evolve.🤝 That experience reinforced an important lesson: hiring is not a static process.✅ Even when a role is clearly defined at the start, the best decisions often come from ongoing conversations, transparency, and a shared willingness to adapt when necessary. Talent Acquisition and Hiring Managers are not two separate sides of the process. We are working toward the same goal.🍀 How involved are Hiring Managers in your organization once recruitment starts? Do they stay engaged throughout the process or mainly participate during the intake stage?🤔

After I shared a post last week about judgement in Talent Acquisition, a few conversations followed that really stuck with me. Most weren’t about tools, metrics, or process design. They were about moments. Moments where a recruiter knew the brief wasn’t quite right but pushed ahead anyway. Moments where speed won over substance. Moments where everyone felt the urgency, but no one stopped to ask whether it was actually justified. It reinforced something for me: judgement in TA rarely shows up in dashboards. You see it in the decisions people make when there isn’t a clear answer. Do we pause this hire, or force it through? Do we challenge a hiring manager, or keep the peace? Do we wait for the right person, or fill the seat because the pressure is loud? Those calls don’t feel dramatic at the time. But they compound. Good judgement isn’t about being cautious or slow. It’s about knowing when a decision will cost more later than it does today. In 2026, I think the best TA teams will be the ones trusted to make those calls....and supported when they do. Because judgement can’t be automated. But it can be encouraged, protected, and modelled.
