George Lucas Officially Announces New Star Wars Installation Coming This Fall

George Lucas just announced a major new Star Wars installation.

As the Star Wars creator gets ready to open the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art on September 22, 2026, Lucas announced that one of the first 30 exhibitions will be Star Wars in Motion, featuring an array of props, costumes, illustrations, and vehicle designs from the original Star Wars trilogy and the prequel trilogy.

Alongside this announcement, the Lucas and Mellody Hobson-founded museum released a 30-second teaser video that compiles several scenes from the Star Wars films. After text appears on the screen saying, "Inaugural Cinema Exhibition: Star Wars in Motion. On September 22, we ride," the video ends by showing a rendering of the museum's exterior. Through the use of visual storytelling, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art's exhibitions will feature prehistoric cave paintings, ancient sculptures of gods and goddesses, Renaissance paintings, photos, comics, and modern cinema to show how human culture has evolved over time.

Star Wars in Motion will debut with other exhibitions like Architecture, Benton (about Thomas Hart Benton's work), Children's Stories (featuring Beatrix Potter, Leo Politi, E.H. Shepard and Jacob Lawrence), Cinema (with Lucas Archives props and costumes), Everyday Life, Civic Life, Comics (with featured artists Mœbius, Marie Severin, Jack Kirby, Alison Bechdel, Jim Lee, Frank Miller, and Rafael Navarro) and Manga/Anime.

Other exhibitions include Frazetta (featuring select illustrations by Frank Frazetta), History, Jessie Willcox Smith, Murals (by Judith F. Baca, Diego Rivera and JR), Narrative Forms, Parrish (focusing on illustrator Maxfield Parrish), Photography (with images by Robert Capa, Gordon Parks, Alfred Eisenstaedt and Dorothea Lange), Rockwell (about illustrator Norman Rockwell), Wyeth (with illustrations by N.C. Wyeth), and Western Stories.

The museum, which will feature over 1,200 objects and artifacts at launch, is located at Exposition Park in Los Angeles, California. The building is situated on an 11-acre campus that's surrounded by trees and gardens. As of May 4, memberships are available to purchase, with prices that range from $140 to $600.

Lucas directed and wrote the very first Star Wars film in 1977. After it grossed $775 million at the box office, the filmmaker created an entire franchise, first by finishing the original trilogy with The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

Sixteen years later, Lucas directed the prequel trilogy, which shows how Anakin Skywalker became the villain Darth Vader. After wrapping up that series of films with Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, Lucas created and produced the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

Disney bought his production company, Lucasfilm, in 2012 and secured the rights to multiple properties, including Star Wars and Indiana Jones. This led the Mickey Mouse company to increase Star Wars output like never before.

On the big screen, J.J. Abrams and Rian Johnson directed the sequel trilogy (The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker), with Gareth Edwards and Ron Howard overseeing the spinoff films Rogue One and Solo.

Several Star Wars TV shows have been released in recent years as well, including Star Wars Rebels, The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Andor, Ahsoka, and Maul – Shadow Lord.

Beginning this month, Disney is shifting its priorities back to the big screen with the release of The Mandalorian and Grogu on May 22. Another film, Star Wars: Starfighter, will arrive in theaters in May 2027.

Despite this massive expansion of the franchise in recent years, the Star Wars exhibit at the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art will focus solely on the six initial films that Lucas was directly involved in while he still ran Lucasfilm.
