Tsunku shares emotional story behind Rhythm Heaven Groove and why he stayed loyal to Nintendo

After 11 years without a new entry, the Rhythm Heaven series finally returned with Rhythm Heaven Groove, which launched for Nintendo Switch on July 2. The release also marked the return of Japanese musician, composer, and producer Tsunku, who worked with Nintendo once again after creating the music for the original game.
In a post on his blog, Tsunku reflected on the 11 years leading up to the game’s release. He revealed that he occasionally received offers from other companies to create games similar to Rhythm Heaven, but declined them out of gratitude toward Nintendo and because he believed he would one day have the opportunity to work with the company again.

Rhythm Heaven Groove icons added to Nintendo Switch Online

July 1: Rhythm Heaven Groove fans can now celebrate the game’s release with new icons on Nintendo Switch Online. They’re available now for both Nintendo Switch 2 and Switch.
You can claim designs for characters, backgrounds, and frames. If you’re going for a character, it’ll cost you 10 Platinum Points on My Nintendo. Backgrounds and frames are 5 Platinum Points as usual.

Most rhythm games set their reflex-based gameplay against pulse-pounding electronic soundtracks, covers of popular rock songs, or even music from other video games. There’s really only one rhythm game series whose gameplay is layered against a cacophony of girls whistling at dogs, men grunting as they flex their biceps, and an evil moon that sneezes to the beat. Rhythm Heaven is one of Nintendo’s weirdest franchises, never afraid to one-up itself with minigames designed to surprise above all else. Rhythm Heaven Groove is the first new game in the series in over a decade, and arguably introduces the largest variety of new minigames and modes that the series has ever seen. And while not every portion of the package totally lands, I always found myself eager to see what baffling concept I’d get to groove to next.

Rhythm Heaven Groove is finally launching on Nintendo Switch this week, and going along with that, the first set of reviews are now in.
We’ve actually been waiting on this one for a pretty long time. Nintendo announced the title back in March 2025, promising a 2026 launch. For a company that often tends to stick with small announcement to release windows, this was a big irregular.

Rhythm Heaven Groove now has a release date. The game is due out on July 2, 2026, the company just announced.

Nintendo hasn’t shared too much thus far – likely given how fact away it is – but there’ll be plenty of mini-games to get involved with. Also, renowned Japanese musician Tsunku♂ is confirmed to be involved.
