Random Events in Grand Theft Auto Online
Random Events are encounters and short missions which spawn randomly throughout the state of San Andreas in Grand Theft Auto Online, first introduced in The Diamond Casino Heist update.
Description
[edit | edit source]Random Events can occur in any Free Mode session type. Usually, there will be a 20-minute delay after the session is initiated before the first Random Event(s) can start appearing. Each Random Event is triggered independently, therefore some can occur simultaneously.
Most Random Events will only appear when a player is near the target location. Once an event is triggered, it will have an independent active time limit and a cooldown timer at the conclusion of that active timer before another event of the same type can be triggered. As each Random Event can have a different active timer and cooldown time, they will appear more and more randomly as the session duration increases.
Actively participating in one Random Event will not prevent triggering other Random Events, however players actively engaged in any other Free Mode work including Freemode Events and Freemode Challenges will not see a Random Event until that work is completed, but they can still trigger one by getting within range.
Events
[edit | edit source]Police Rescue
[edit | edit source]Added in The Diamond Casino Heist update.
The player may encounter a Police Transporter with its siren on, driving around various locations on the map, containing an arrested Packie McReary whom the player can rescue for a reward of $10,000, 2,800 RP, and the "Gunman" award. Lester Crest will then send a text message suggesting McReary owes a debt to the player that can be repaid by recruiting him for participation in The Diamond Casino Heist.
This random event has been removed as a part of A Safehouse in the Hills update, making Packie as an available Casino Heist crew at the beginning.
Drug Vehicle
[edit | edit source]Keep an eye out for anything suspicious by the roadside. You never know when you'll happen across a deal going down and be in a position to mount a hostile takeover. Once it's yours, why not return it to its illegal owner for a reward...”
Added in Los Santos Summer Special update.
The player may encounter an active drug deal between two Street Punks, which the player may interrupt, after which they can steal the drug vehicle. After collecting the vehicle, the player receives a text from either Al Carter, Edgar Carlos, or The Families Boss giving a delivery point. The player earns $25,000 and RP for delivering the vehicle.

Upon inspecting this flare, another flare location is given, along with a message asking the player to follow the trail of flares towards a Smuggler Cache. This trail may branch off in one of three possible directions from the initial flare. The player must follow this trail soon after discovering the first, or it will disappear soon after. There are five total flares to be followed and collected before the Cache is discovered, which rewards the player with $25,000 and
2000RP when opened.
