Renoir Fight Strategy
The Best Tips for Renoir:
Renoir does not have any Shields at the start, and you can focus on building up your damage. Buffs like Powerful can greatly improve your damage, and you can pair this with the Mark effect to amplify the damage that Renoir will receive. You can use a combination of attacks from either Sciel and Monoco to inflict the Mark effect with Marking Card or Echassier Stabs, respectively. Another great skill, like All Set from Sciel, can also be used to get the Powerful, Shell, and Rush, all in one skill. After that, once it's Maelle's turn, use Momentum Strike or Percee, which allows her to deal bonus damage to a target with the Mark status effect.
Maelle has a good attack pattern that she can perform on her own (but will require at least 2 turns) or with the help of another party member. The first requirement of this attack is to apply the Burn effect against Renoir. You can use Wildfire from Lune, use Monoco to start up the fire by using skills Danseuse Waltz or Braseleur Smash (it is better to use either of these skills when the pointer is at Balanced Mask, or use Maelle to cast Rain of Fire. After this turn, you can use Swift Stride on Maelle so she switches to Virtuose Stance (target must be burning). Then, finally, you can get Maelle to use Fleuret Fury, which will deal 200% Damage when she's on Virtuose Stance. After building up multiple burn effects on Renoir, you may also use Combustion or Burning Canvas from Maelle, which can can increase damage based on the current Burn effects.
You might also want to equip Rebirth on Lune for an option to revive your teammates, or prepare the Grim Harvest on Sciel. Grim Harvest is more useful when you need to heal all allies by 30%, and this also deals medium Dark damage. However, using Grim Harvest is better when you have Foretell charges, so try to build it up with each turn if you're using Sciel. For Lune, the main objective is to collect stains, which you can do by casting skills, while there are also skills that consume skills to become more powerful. Make sure to balance her skills in every turn. To create stains, you can use skills like Wildfire, which will also contribute towards the Burn effects that Maelle needs for Combustion.
When using Monoco, you may want to take advantage of his skills that can apply Break or start by building up the Break bar with Moissonneuse Vendange, Stalact Punches, Duallist Storm, or Bruler Bash from Monoco. Make sure to check the pointer of Monoco's Bestial Wheel and see if they match the skill that you are about to use.
Renoir Attacks & Counters
| Attack | Description | Counter |
| Old Lumiere Encounter | ||
| Chroma Waves |
A pool of white chroma will surge into Renoir, before he unleashes a wave of energy at the party five times. The first four happen in quick succession, and the final one is delayed. Note: He will also have this attack within the Monolith. |
Parry once you see the chroma finish coalescing into Renoir, as he will instantly slash at your party. Remember the 5th attack is slightly delayed, so don't press parry too soon. |
| Chroma Pool |
Renoir will crouch and then fly upwards. After a brief pause, he will crash down and Chroma will explode in the nearby area. Note: he will also have this attack within the Monolith. |
You can avoid this by pressing Jump when you see Renoir crash down. A successful jump will perform a counterattack. |
| Petal Gather | Petals will gather around Renoir as he waves his weapon around. When he's done, he will create 2 mirrors that can heal him. This move is done automatically at 50% HP. The Petals will act on Renoir's turn. | Destroy the mirrors ASAP to prevent Renoir from healing. Stunning him before he reaches 50% HP will delay this move, but not prevent it. The mirrors do not show up in the action order, they will act on his turn. Their HP pool is relatively low even on expert, so you shouldn't need much to defeat them. |
| Summon Masks | Three masks will appear above Renoir. He will control each mask to send a wave starting from the left side. The head will move left and right before it attacks. Each masks will attack individually twice (total of 6), then on the final strike, they will attack together. | Once the masks move, get ready to press Parry to counter this attack. Alternatively, you can also press Dodge to avoid getting damaged. |
| Ranged Attack |
From a distance, Renoir will attack one target. This will attack 4 times. He will begin with a horizontal slicing motion, followed by a thrust a second later. The third strike will be heavily delayed while Renoir performs a dramatic flourish. He will spin twice, then thrust again. The final strike, he will leap into the air, and after an audio cue, will slam into your expeditioner. |
Look at the hand movements of Renoir and pay attention to the slowdown moment as he waves the weapon. He will shortly attack after this slowdown, and this is a good time to press Parry or Dodge. |
| Inside the Monolith Encounter | ||
| Melee Combo |
A 5-6 hit combo, depending on your phase. Renoir will dash toward an Expeditioner before delivering an uppercut slice, followed by another uppercut shortly after. The third strike will be a delayed overhead slash, followed by a flourishing hop into a low sweeping attack, and concluding with a jumping slash after a brief pause in the air. Note: If you are in phase 2 of Old Lumiere or in the Monolith, he will follow up the 5th attack with a 6th, where he will hover in the air, gathering golden chroma before exploding it toward your party member. If this final blow lands, the Expeditioner will be stunned. |
Renoir lets out a short grunt right as he is about to attack. Press parry the second you hear it. Additionally, you can also watch for the following animation cues: The first two attacks come back to back and have similar speed, but the third, you will need to pause for half a second before parrying. Ignore the flourish after the third attack. Simply wait for Renoir to jump, as he will attack the second he lands, so press parry as he is about to land back on the ground. In the 5th attack, he will linger in the air for a moment after jumping. Wait half a second after he jumps, then parry. Timing is similar to strike three, albeit with a different animation. For the 6th attack, there is a loud audio cue that plays as the chroma coalesces into Renoir. Parry as soon as the sound concludes, as that is when he will erupt. |
| Gathers an Incredible Amount of Chroma |
A dark ink will form above Renoir as he appears to absorb it. The screen will turn dark as the ink rotates, then it will strike the party. (Old Lumiere, phase 1 only) In phase 2 of Old Lumiere, and for the entire duration of the Monlith battle, he will summon 3 blasts of chroma. The first two will be in succession, the third one, a gradient attack, will be marginally delayed. If any of these hit the party, it will apply Defenceless. |
Watch the pool of chroma. It will begin as a large blob of energy, before quickly shrinking inward. Once it does this, there will be an audio cue. For Old Lumiere phase 1, simply press your gradient attack button at this time. For Old Lumiere phase 2, as well a the Monolith battle, use your standard parry for the first 2 strikes, then gradient parry the third. The third will be marginally delayed in its execution, but the timing is still based on the same animation/audio cue. |
| Beast Summoning | When Renoir falls down on his knees, a Beast will walk inside the cave to heal him and attack the expedition. This move also applies Enraged to Renoir, which gives him another turn. | n/a |
| Beast Launch Attack | The beast will let out a loud roar then do a backflip. The beast will reposition itself to the back of the cave, then it will launch itself to attack the group one more time before vanishing. | The beast's attack can be avoided with a combination of Parry or Dodge and a Jump. The first attack will come after the roar, then once the beast jumps to the back of the cave wait until you see it turn into a dark orb flying across the room, then Press Jump as it get close to the group. |
| Beast Tail Attack | The beast will return to the fight and the screen will turn black and white as the beast lets out a growl. After a brief pause, it will quickly jump up to swipe its tail against the group. | Watch out for the part when the screen turns black and white. Get ready to gradient parry once you see the full body of the beast midair as the attack will strike your entire team an instant later for very high damage. |
| Beast Claw Attack | The beast will return to the fight will appear in front of the group. It will raise its paw to attack 3 times. The pattern is left, left, brief pause, then heavy attack. | There's an audio cue right before the beast will attack. Make sure to listen, as well as look at the movements of the paw. The first 2 strikes have a similar timing, while the third one has a slight delay before it attacks with both paws. You can press Parry or Dodge for this attack. |
| Gommage |
Renoir will approach one target and reach out his hand before jumping. Then, as he crashes down, the screen will turn black and white, before he strikes to vanish a target. This removes the target from the fight for the remainder of the battle. He has a tendency to OPEN with this attack in Old Lumiere, and he will continue to use it sporadically, or even in succession multiple turns in a row, until he vanishes a party member. Once he vanishes someone, this attack will not trigger again. During phase 2 of Old Lumiere, as well as the entire Monolith battle, this attack will have one additional attack. Renoir will leap into the air as he does with the phase 1 version, but this time it will just be a standard attack. After he lands, the screen will turn black and white, he will flourish, aiming his back to you, then strike as he turns 180 degrees to face the Expeditioner. |
Watch out for the part when the screen turns black and white. Get ready for a Gradient Parry as this attack requires a quick reaction time. If you are in phase 2 of the Old Lumiere fight, he will attack normally once, then use the vanishing gradient attack. In this case, parry as you see his aerial attack descend towards you, then gradient parry when he has his back to you. The gradient parry timing for phase 2 is marginally delayed due to a flourish versus the timing of phase 1; don't be as eager to parry it the second the screen changes to black and white. If you miss parrying the standard attack during phase 2, don't worry. It's just the gradient attack that will vanish a party member. Note: This attack is in the wrong section, as he will have access to this attack when facing him in Old Lumiere, AS WELL as inside the Monolith. However, when inside the Monolith, he will ALWAYS use the phase 2 version: basic attack, then gradient vanishing attack. |
| Lumiere Encounter | ||
| Renoir Attack | Renoir will wave his cane then strike it upward. Then, he will pause briefly, and strike downward. | The first strike can be avoided by pressing the Jump when you see Renoir wave his weapon. Wait for a slight delay after the first attack, then get ready to press Dodge or Parry. |
| Black Hole | Renoir will summon a black hole above him. After preparing this attack, he will control it to launch at the group. This attack will drain your party's AP to 0 if it lands. | Look at the Black Hole getting larger as it charges up. After a while, you will hear an audio cue signaling the launch of this attack. Get ready to press Parry or Dodge after you hear the "zing". |
| Void Cross | Renoir will wave his weapon twice, and a Chroma cross will form in front of him. After an audio cue, he will control it to attack one target. | When you see the second line of Chroma appear across the screen, get ready to press Dodge or Parry. |
| Renoir Combo | Renoir will approach one target and swing his weapon to attack a target 5 times. The first strike will come from the left, right, then he will jump toward the target, swing from above, then attack from the right again. After this, he will continue to fly higher, then charge up the last strike. | This attack has different timing and he will wave his weapon in between strikes to delay the next attack. Make sure to watch the movement of his hands and weapon so you can press Dodge or Parry on time. |
| Axon Summon | Renoir will call on the power of Sirene, Visages, Reacher and Hauler to assist him once his first HP bar reaches 50%. The Visages can grant Renoir Shields. Reacher will apply buffs. Hauler will throw a building at you. | Watch carefully who he is summoning. Visages will grant him a significant number of shields. Use skills that can destroy Shields like Breaking Rules (Maelle), Chevaliere Piercing (Monoco). The Reacher will apply powerful, shell and rush to Renoir (or will negate Powerless, Defenceless and Slow if you've currently applied them.) Simply use whatever means you desire to reapply your debuffs to negate any buffs he's received. Removing Rush should be your priority, as the fewer turns he gets, the easier the fight will be, as this also means fewer turns for the Axons. The Hauler will toss a building at your team for an AOE blast. It will appear on the horizon, pause for half a second, then rocket toward you. Press parry as it begins its descent, as it approaches deceptively fast after it pauses. Note: The Axons act on Renoir's turn and are independent. Meaning Renoir will get a turn, THEN an Axon will support him. So once summoned, he essentially gets two actions every turn until his first HP bar is depleted. You can delay this move by timing your break around 50% of his HP bar, allowing you to deal more damage before he can use a turn to call upon them, thereby limiting just how often the Axons will attack. |
| Sirene Rescue | When Renoir's health drops, Sirene will rescue and replenish Renoir's health to full. This marks the end of the first battle. Renoir will lose access to the Axons going forward, but gain the following moves listed below in exchange. | n/a |
| Dessendre Canvas | Renoir will summon a large canvas behind him at the start of phase 2. He will rip a portion of it and go inside the painting. After vanishing inside the painting for a few seconds, he will come out glowing. | This grants Renoir Powerful, Shell and Rush. Simply use whatever means at your disposal (exposing break, for example) to remove these buffs ASAP. Note: if you have stun applied to him at the end of phase 1, it carries over to his second HP bar. While his turn will automatically be shoved to the front of the line, the stun will prevent him from summoning the canvas until his NEXT action, delaying the application of his buffs. |
| Renoir's Power Unleashed |
This is a 4-part attack that triggers when you reach 50% of his second health bar. Renoir will begin to fly around the arena, gathering powers from all the Axons. Do not let your guard down, despite how cinematic this looks, it IS an attack. Wait until he reconvenes above your party with his new wings and blade drawn. |
Each attack is signalled by two audio cues. The first you will hear, is a chime like sound. Do NOT parry or dodge when this sounds as you will be too early. Renoir will let out a distinct grunt as soon as this chime sound concludes, marking his attack actually occurring. For the first two attacks, parry when you hear the grunt as by the time the audio ends, the attack will connect with your team. The second grunt might be a bit muted, depending on your music settings, as the music for this attack is scripted to play the chorus of this theme and it's quite loud. For the chroma blast, there is both the audio cue of the grunt, as well as the visual cue of Renoir pushing his throwing/weapon arm downward toward the party. The timing is the same for both cues (he grunts as his arm descends), so use whichever you find easier to pay attention to. For the final attack, you want to wait a fraction of a second AFTER his grunt has fully concluded, as he hovers in the air for about a third of a second, THEN divebombs the party. Similar to the above attacks that happen at specified HP thresholds, ensuring Renoir is stunned around 50% HP will delay the usage of this attack until his next available turn. |
| Frantic Attack | Renoir will approach a target and start to attack them 8 times while hovering and flying in front of them. The first strike will come from a right swing, then brief pause before swinging from the left. He will return to the middle of the target right before he launches himself forward to attack going to the right, left, and right, and right. After this, he will return to the center again, then launch another frontal attack that will make him spin fast. The screen will turn black and white and Renoir will slow down right before he crashes down to attack the target. | This attack has different timing and he will wave his weapon in between strikes to delay the next attack. Make sure to watch the movement of his hands and weapon so you can press Dodge or Parry on time. |
| Pool of Darkness | Renoir will fly high then wave his weapon around him. After a brief pause, he will crash down and cause 3 explosions. | The first strike will happen after Renoir reaches the peak altitude, then he will swing his weapon once. After that, he will crash on the ground. Make sure to press Parry or Dodge before he hits the ground. Then, get ready to Parry or Dodge 2 more times after this. |
| Void Meteor | Void orbs will gather around Renoir that resembles a star shape. Once all 5 orbs are lined up, the screen will move further away, signaling the start of the attack. Soon after, the orbs will be shot toward a target. This attack can stun the targets briefly. | Once the orbs have lined up, focus on the orb on the lower left side. This is the first that will be fired after a quick charge-up period and you will see an explosion before it is fired at a target. You can press Parry after this explosion fires, but before it hits the target. Alternatively, you can press Dodge early to avoid this attack. The sequence is: Lower Left, Top, Upper Right, Lower Right, then Upper Left. |
