The Hellion's Heart is a Companion Quest in Baldur's Gate 3. The Hellion's Heart can be acquired from Karlach as part of Our Fiery Friend during act tba. Completing The Hellion's Heart will progress Karlach story progression forward. Completing Quests allows players to learn more about the world and characters in Baldur's Gate 3, as well as earning more loot and experience to become more powerful.

Baldur's Gate 3 The Hellion's Heart Walkthrough

The Hellion’s Heart quest begins once Karlach joins your party and begins revealing details about the Infernal Engine inside her. If you’ve already brought her along to face the Paladins of Tyr in the Hunt the Devil quest, she’ll confide that the engine has been overheating ever since she escaped Avernus. She's desperate to find someone skilled in infernal mechanics to help stabilize it.

Tracking Down Dammon, the Infernal Mechanic

Karlach's best hope lies in a tiefling named Dammon, who used to work on infernal devices during his time in Avernus after the fall of Elturel. Dammon recognizes the origin of Karlach’s heart and offers to assist, if he can get the right materials. He suspects Infernal Iron will be essential for any repair work and recalls spotting some during his travels.

You can encounter Dammon in a few key locations, depending on your progress:

• In the barn at the Last Light Inn.
• Near the Forge of the Nine in the Lower City.
• At the Druid Grove, specifically within The Hollow.

Be cautious: Dammon’s survival isn’t guaranteed. He can perish during the Raid the Grove assault, or fall victim during Marcus Fist’s attack on the Last Light Inn. If he makes it safely to Baldur’s Gate, he’s no longer in danger, unless, of course, the player chooses to attack him.

Where to Find Infernal Iron

To fully upgrade Karlach’s engine, you’ll need to collect two pieces of Infernal Iron. These rare materials can be found in various locations, such as:

• A chest in the basement of the Blacksmith’s House in the Blighted Village, which also contains the Highcliff's Blueprints.
• A locked chamber above Dror Ragzlin’s throne in the Shattered Sanctum.
• A reward from Kith in Grymforge after successfully passing three conversation checks.
• A room in the Mason’s Guild in Reithwin Town, located in the Shadow-Cursed Lands.
• A locked area in the back-left of the Zhentarim Hideout in Act 1, accessible during the Free the Artist side quest.

Upgrading Karlach’s Engine

With Karlach in your party, you can return to Dammon to begin the repair process. Only she can initiate the upgrade herself, so her presence is mandatory. After the first enhancement, Karlach notices a reduction in the extreme heat, though the engine still isn’t stable. Dammon hints at the need for more Infernal Iron and speculates about magical coolant as a possible solution.

The second and final upgrade is far more significant. Karlach finally gains the ability to touch others again without causing harm, a powerful emotional moment for her, as she hasn’t experienced physical contact in a decade.

Where and when Dammon is met affects the upgrade process:

If the first repair is performed in the Grove, he won’t be able to complete the second until he relocates to the Last Light Inn.
Meeting Dammon initially at the Last Light Inn allows both upgrades to be completed after a Long Rest.
If you find him for the first time in Baldur’s Gate, both upgrades are possible at the Forge of the Nine, again after resting.
