Balthazar's Experiment is a Companion Quest in Baldur's Gate 3. Balthazar's Experiment is a part of the The Wizard of Waterdeep Companion Questline. Completing Balthazar's Experiment will progress Gale story progression forward. Completing Quests allows players to learn more about the world and characters in Baldur's Gate 3, as well as earning more loot and experience to become more powerful.

BG3 Balthazar's Experiment Objectives

 Deal with Balthazar's ritual circle.

• We found a strange ritual circle hidden in a secret workshop within Balthazar's chambers. Gale was able to understand the strange sigils used to cast it, and says it was used to create the Moonlanterns that protect their wielders from the shadow curse. Gale says there is enough magic still within it to create one last lantern, one he claims he can make even better than Balthzar's. But this requires him to use a kind of magic forbidden by Mystra. To earn her good favour, he'd be better off destroying it.
  
  

Balthazar's Experiment Walkthrough

In a concealed workshop tucked away inside Balthazar’s quarters, we uncovered a mysterious ritual circle. The markings inscribed around it were foreign to us, but Gale deciphered their purpose. According to him, this enchantment was responsible for forging Moonlanterns—powerful items shielding their bearers from the creeping Shadow Curse. He believes the circle still holds enough residual power to craft one final lantern, potentially superior to Balthazar’s own. However, doing so would demand the use of arcane methods Mystra forbids. If Gale seeks her favor, his best course may be to dismantle the circle entirely.
Using the remains of a discarded pixie, we activated the circle and shaped a Shadow Lantern from its dark magic. Though Gale warned this kind of spellwork would likely displease Mystra, she has shown no signs of punishing him for it—at least, not yet. Regardless of her silence, the lantern we’ve made turns the very shadows against themselves, and its power may prove invaluable in the battles to come.
We chose to destroy the circle, purging the area of the lingering shadow corruption. Gale felt no words from Mystra, but for a brief moment, he sensed her nearness. As a sign of her favor, she granted him a small blessing—an aid in his continued struggle against the darkness. (Mystra’s Benevolence: Gale gains advantage on concentration checks until his next long rest.)
We attempted to harness the ritual’s power without involving Gale. The attempt backfired, causing the circle to collapse beyond repair. Gale was... less than pleased.
We chose not to interfere with the ritual site. Its dark energy will slowly seep into the surroundings, polluting everything it touches—unless someone else decides to make use of it.
