Pokemon GO's Mega Mewtwo Raids will feature a new mechanic that forces the user to raise their device in the air alongside other players to charge up a new Unity attack. Mega Evolution was added to Pokemon GO several years ago, and Niantic has slowly been adding all the various Mega Evolutions from the mainline games. For three decades now, Mewtwo has been one of the most popular Pokemon, and fans have been eagerly waiting to see its Mega Evolutions added to Pokemon GO.
July marks the tenth anniversary of Pokemon GO, and the occasion coincides with Pokemon GO Fest 2026. Niantic has three in-person events this year, which are taking place in Tokyo, Chicago, and Copenhagen. As is usually the case, Pokemon GO will also host a global event, which will allow players to take part in the festivities even if they can't attend one of the in-person events.

Pokemon GO Fest 2026 has begun in Tokyo, and players now have a chance to participate in Super Mega Raids to get Mega Mewtwo X and Y. Ahead of time, Niantic revealed changes to Mega Evolution in Pokemon GO, but there's one new mechanic that players are just finding out about. Unity Attacks are a new mechanic where players team up to perform a powerful attack together when the opposing Pokemon is at low health. To charge up the Unity Attack, the phone or device is raised into the air alongside other players. Naturally, some fans have found that doing so is a little embarrassing.

This isn't the first time Niantic has forced players to do something unusual with their device; evolving Inkay in Pokemon GO requires turning a device upside down. However, that's something players can do in their own home, and the public nature of Super Mega Raids makes things a little more awkward. Thankfully, it does seem that there are workarounds that make it a little less embarrassing for players. One user on Reddit attended the event in Japan, and they noted that keeping the device low right before the Unity Attack and then raising it works well enough. In theory, it seems going from a sitting to standing position could also work.
Over the years, Niantic has put a big emphasis on Pokemon GO as a social game. After a number of concessions to keep the game thriving during the coronavirus pandemic, the developers have spent the last few years looking for ways to get people playing the game in public again. Fans haven't always been happy with how this is handled; Pokemon GO can have some frustrating requirements at times. Sometimes Niantic expects a little too much from players, whether it's traveling to specific biomes, or participating in certain Raids in public. Given that, it's understandable why some fans are already frustrated with the idea of making big gestures in public.

Pokemon GO appeals to a wide range of players of all ages, and some of the game's older fans would probably prefer to remain low-key while playing the game in public. That's not always feasible, especially when the developers decide to implement silly additions, like these new Unity Attacks. It's possible Niantic could make a change if there's enough frustration from players, but at the very least, it seems there's a workaround for those who need it.
