One Piece Officially Teases Luffy's Gear 6 Transformation

In One Piece Chapter 1044, which was officially released on March 28, 2022, in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump Issue #19, Eiichiro Oda unveiled Luffy's true power of Luffy's Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika, and gave us Gear 5 through its Awakening. This chapter was one of the most iconic in the entire series, if not the most iconic, and despite four years having passed, it is still fresh in the memory of all the fans. Luffy awakening Gear 5 was important for him to take the next step on his journey to becoming the Pirate King. By acquiring Gear 5, he was able to defeat Kaido and stand on an even footing with the other Emperors.

Now, however, One Piece is in the Final Saga and in the climax of Elbaf. Luffy needs more than just Gear 5 to triumph over the King of the World, Nerona Imu, who descended officially on April 5, 2026, in chapter 1179. All the other threats that are going to be faced by the Straw Hat Pirates from here on out are on a completely different level, which requires Luffy to be much stronger as well, and hence sets up the need for Gear 6. On paper, Gear 6 might seem like an impossible dream for Luffy to achieve, but the latest information presented in One Piece Chapters 1179 and 1182 indicates that Gear 6 is still possible, and now, has been teased by the author Eiichiro Oda himself.

One Piece Chapters 1179 And 1182 Officially Introduce God Rings In Elbaf And Set The Basis For Gear 6

Luffy's gears are one of the most ingenious ways of fighting that we have seen in One Piece to date. He developed the power of Gear 2 in the Enies Lobby arc and showcased it against Blueno in One Piece Chapter 388 on November 7, 2005, for the very first time. In the battle against Rob Lucci, in One Piece Chapter 421, on July 31, 2006, Luffy unveiled the power of Gear 3 for the very first time. Following the timeskip, Luffy had already learned Gear 4, and he unleashed its power against Doflamingo in One Piece Chapter 783, on April 13 2015, which was then followed by multiple versions of Gear 4 in the Whole Cake Island arc. Finally, Luffy tapped into Gear 5 in One Piece Chapter 1044, on March 28, 2022.

Undoubtedly, Luffy's powers have continually evolved over the years in the face of greater threats. Now, Nerona Imu, the King of the World, stands in front of Luffy as an indomitable force that the Straw Hat Pirate needs to take down. Unfortunately, Gear 5 does not have the capabilities to do that, based on what Eiichiro Oda has shown us himself. This is precisely why Gear 6 is needed, and the framework for it could be set within the powers of Luffy's Devil Fruit Awakening.

In One Piece Chapter 1179, which was released in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump Issue #19 on April 5, 2026, Eiichiro Oda unveiled the full power of Nerona Imu and his Devil Fruit ability, known as Akuma no Mi. This power manifested by granting him a unique transformation, and one of the most peculiar things about this transformation was a ring of black flames behind Imu's back. This ring of black flames can be freely manipulated by Nerona Imu, and he calls it his Omen or his military might.

In the battle against Loki, which began officially in One Piece Chapter 1181, we could see Nerona Imu use this giant ring of black flames made of Omen to produce offensive as well as defensive measures. The offensive power of this black ring of flames is such that it can deal deadly damage to Loki, someone with the power to destroy the world, and the defensive power is such that it can tank attacks that can potentially wipe out whole countries. This giant ring might be mistaken for a unique ability of Nerona Imu's Akuma no Mi ability; however, One Piece Chapter 1182, which was officially released on May 10, 2026, in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump Issue #24, officially disproved that. This chapter introduced Rain God Zaza to us for the very first time through Killingham's usage of the Ryu Ryu no Mi, Model: Kirin.

As an MMA, Rain God Zaza manifested in the Western Village of Elbaf and immediately started flooding the land with immense amounts of torrential rainfall. What was most curious about Zaza was that this God also held a giant ring of water behind its back, akin to Nerona Imu. This giant ring of water could be freely manipulated by Zaza to produce more water and destroy its enemies. The implication here is that each God in the world of One Piece has this giant ring, but One Piece's Sun God Nika, Monkey D. Luffy, has not been shown this ring yet, setting up room for an improved version of Gear 5 or what Luffy could potentially call Gear 6.

In the Wano Country arc, specifically in One Piece Chapter 1044, Luffy officially called Gear 5 the peak of his abilities. This was because he had awakened his Devil Fruit for the very first time, and it is clear that beyond his Awakening, there is no other transformation. However, that does not mean that Luffy cannot improve his usage of Gear 5 and discover new abilities within it. If Luffy goes on to awaken his own Sun Ring, which floats behind his back just as Nerona Imu and Rain God Zaza have their own, then this power would still work within the concept of the Nika form — only Luffy would then label it Gear 6.

It is also curious to note that Luffy's main transformation has earned him the name Sun God Nika, yet nothing about his Gear 5 transformation can even be attributed to the sun. Perhaps the real reason why this unique white Warrior of Liberation transformation is known as the Sun God is because of this ring of bright flames that could potentially be awakened by Monkey D. Luffy in combat against Nerona Imu in the climax of the Elbaf Arc.

Why Gear 6 Is A Necessity For Luffy In The Final Saga

As things stand, Luffy does not have what it takes to fight Nerona Imu and defeat him in combat. This is clear when looking at the display that he put on against the likes of Kaido and Admiral Kizaru. While Luffy is strong, he was still more or less around the same level as these individuals. He was able to overwhelm Kaido and Kizaru at times, but Nerona Imu is on a completely different level of strength. Even Loki, who is stated to hold the power to destroy the world officially in One Piece Chapter 1130, is struggling to rival him in combat.

Taking these things into consideration, there is no way for Luffy to defeat Imu as he is currently. As such, the biggest way for Luffy to fight Imu and take him down in battle is to gain further power, which could be delivered through this ring of the Sun. Without further upgrades to Gear 5, Luffy's innate strength is not going to increase, and his Conqueror's Haki is not going to grow either. All of this is tied together, which tells us that Luffy must get stronger in one way or another.
