    Are you ready to take your business global? Here are five things to keep in mind. As an entrepreneur, I know that expanding your business internationally can be daunting. But if you do your homework and plan carefully, it can be a hugely rewarding experience. Here are five things I learned while expanding CSB internationally: 1. Local Flavor, Global Vision: Before you set sail, take the time to truly understand the culture, preferences, and nuances of your target market. Adapting your product or service with a local touch doesn't just make you relatable; it makes you unforgettable. 2. Build a Network of Navigators: Take your time! Forge alliances with local partners, distributors, or influencers who understand the lay of the land. These connections can open doors and help you navigate the maze of a new market. 3. Legalities and Logistics Matter: International expansion isn't just about trading products; it's navigating legal frameworks and supply chains. Don't skimp on the legal nitty-gritty and ensure a smooth logistical flow – your business's lifelines abroad. 4. Flex Those Adaptability Muscles: Like packing extra socks for a journey, be prepared to pivot and adapt. Cultural norms, business practices, local language, and even customer behaviors might differ from what you're used to. Embrace change as your co-pilot. 5. Research is Your Jet Fuel: Buckle up because research is your turbocharged engine. Study the market trends, competition, and regulatory landscapes like your business's success depends on it – because it does. Knowledge is power; in a new market, it's your lifeline. Lastly, patience is the key to everything. Take your time with things. Building a business in a different country takes a lot of work and time. So be patient and trust your hard work. High-performing teams create a “safe container” where everyone—from the quiet thinkers to the bold disruptors—can voice their ideas without fear. 🔹 Inclusive Decision-Making Diversity is wasted if decisions are still made by the loudest voice in the room. Structured inclusion ensures that varied perspectives aren’t just heard but drive the direction forward.     Inclusion isn’t a one-time initiative or a single program—it’s a continuous commitment that must be embedded across every stage of the employee lifecycle. By taking deliberate steps, organizations can create workplaces where all employees feel valued, respected, and empowered to succeed. Here’s how we can make a meaningful impact at each stage: 1. Attract Build inclusive employer branding and equitable hiring practices. Ensure job postings use inclusive language and focus on skills rather than unnecessary credentials. Broaden recruitment pipelines by partnering with diverse professional organizations, schools, and networks. Showcase your commitment to inclusion in external messaging with employee stories that reflect diversity. 2. Recruit Eliminate bias and promote fair candidate evaluation. Use structured interviews and standardized evaluation rubrics to reduce bias. Train recruiters and hiring managers on unconscious bias and inclusive hiring practices. Implement blind resume reviews or AI tools to focus on qualifications, not identifiers. 3. Onboard Create an inclusive onboarding experience. Design onboarding materials that reflect a diverse workplace culture. Pair new hires with mentors or buddies from Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) to foster belonging. Offer inclusion training early to set the tone for inclusivity from day one. 4. Develop Provide equitable opportunities for growth. Ensure leadership programs and career development resources are accessible to underrepresented employees. Regularly review training, mentorship, and promotion programs to address any disparities. Offer specific development opportunities, such as allyship training or workshops on cultural competency. 5. Engage Foster a culture of inclusion. Actively listen to employee feedback through pulse surveys, focus groups, and open forums. Support ERGs and create platforms for marginalized voices to influence organizational policies. Recognize and celebrate diverse perspectives, cultures, and contributions in the workplace. 6. Retain Address barriers to equity and belonging. Conduct pay equity audits and address discrepancies to ensure fairness. Create flexible policies that accommodate diverse needs, including caregiving responsibilities, religious practices, and accessibility. Provide regular inclusion updates to build trust and demonstrate progress. 7. Offboard Learn and grow from employee transitions. Use exit interviews to uncover potential inequities and areas for improvement. Analyze trends in attrition to identify and address any patterns of exclusion or bias. Maintain relationships with alumni and invite them to stay engaged through inclusive networks. Embedding inclusion across the employee lifecycle is not just the right thing to do—it’s a strategic imperative that drives innovation, engagement, and organizational success.     I’ve trained in rooms where people speak English, but think in Marathi, Hindi, Bengali, Tamil Same company, same goals, but completely different communication styles. We love patting ourselves on the back for being diverse. But when a South Indian team feels a North Indian manager is "too aggressive," or a Gen Z employee thinks their Gen X boss is "dismissive", we call it a "communication gap." When really it's India's invisible boardroom barrier. Because while communicating, you’re navigating: 🔹 Cultural nuances 🔹 Generational gaps 🔹 Language preferences 🔹 Urban vs regional perspectives And if you're not adapting, you’re alienating. Here's my 3A’s of Cross-cultural communication framework: 1. Awareness: Recognize that your communication style is shaped by region, generation, and upbringing. It's not universal. 2. Adaptation: Match your message to your audience. One style doesn't fit all rooms. 3. Ask: When in doubt, clarify: What does yes mean here? How do you prefer feedback? What's the protocol for disagreement? India's diversity is incredible. But if we are not actively learning to communicate across cultures, not just languages, we're wasting it. P.S.     Teams are often dysfunctional. For six reasons, not five. In his 2002 book "The Five Dysfunctions of a Team," Patrick Lencioni suggested that genuine teamwork is rare, and that organizations often unknowingly fall prey to five interrelated dysfunctions that hinder team effectiveness. These dysfunctions form an inverted pyramid, each one leading to the next: - Absence of Trust: Team members are unwilling to be vulnerable, leading to... - Fear of Conflict: Inability to engage in unfiltered, passionate debate of ideas, leading to... - Lack of Commitment: Feigning agreement during meetings, leading to... - Avoidance of Accountability: Hesitation to call peers on actions and behaviors that seem counterproductive, leading to... - Inattention to Results: Putting individual needs above the collective goals of the team. Lencioni emphasizes that while these concepts are simple in theory, they require significant discipline and persistence to overcome in practice. He also writes that the leader plays a crucial role by demonstrating vulnerability first, setting the tone for the team to follow. I very much agree with his take. Based on my experience working with diverse teams across the globe, though, I would add another dysfunction: 6. Misunderstanding the Power of Difference: Diverse teams bring unique perspectives and strengths, but misunderstanding or underestimating these differences can lead to missed opportunities and great resentment. Here's how to address this dysfunction: - Acknowledge, understand and value differences. - Foster inclusive, candid communication. - Don't blame difference when things go wrong (since difference is usually not to blame). Whatever the line of difference—identity, role, or geographical location—effective teams manage differences proactively and thoughtfully. When they don't, misunderstandings and misinterpretations due to differences in language, cultural norms, and communication styles can hinder their effectiveness.     “A brilliant VP offended a Japanese client without realizing it.” The meeting room in Tokyo was a masterpiece of minimalism—soft tatami mats, the faint scent of green tea, walls so silent you could hear the gentle hum of the air conditioner. The Vice President, sharp suit, confident smile, walked in ready to impress. His presentation was flawless, numbers airtight, strategy compelling. But then came the smallest of gestures—the moment that shifted everything. He pulled out his business card… and handed it to the Japanese client with one hand. The client froze. His lips curved into a polite smile, but his eyes flickered. He accepted the card quickly, almost stiffly. A silence, subtle but heavy, filled the room. The VP thought nothing of it. But what he didn’t know was this: in Japanese culture, a business card isn’t just paper. It’s an extension of the person. Offering it casually, with one hand, is seen as careless—even disrespectful. By the end of the meeting, the energy had shifted. The strategy was strong, but the connection was fractured. Later, over coffee, the VP turned to me and said quietly: “I don’t get it. The meeting started well… why did it feel like I lost them halfway?” That was his vulnerability—brilliance in business, but blind spots in culture. So, I stepped in. I trained him and his leadership team on cross-cultural etiquette—the invisible codes that make or break global deals. • In Japan: exchange business cards with both hands, take a moment to read the card, and treat it with respect. • In the Middle East: never use your left hand for greetings. • In Europe: being two minutes late might be forgiven in Paris, but never in Zurich. These aren’t trivial details. They are currencies of respect. The next time he met the client, he bowed slightly, held the business card with both hands, and said: “It’s an honor to work with you.” The client’s smile was different this time—warm, genuine, approving. The deal, once slipping away, was back on track. 🌟 Lesson: In a global world, etiquette is not optional—it’s currency. You can have the best strategy, the sharpest numbers, the brightest slides—but if you don’t understand the human and cultural nuances, you’ll lose the room before you know it. Great leaders don’t just speak the language of business.     5 Ways to Turn US-India Culture Differences Into Collaboration Wins (With Real-World How-To’s) 1. Invest in Cultural Fluency—Not Just Sensitivity What to do: Host “culture exchange” sessions. Invite both teams to share how and why they work the way they do. Example: One company held monthly “Ask Me Anything” calls. India teams asked about the US’s drive for speed. US teams learned why Indian teams seek senior buy-in. Result: Less frustration, more alignment. 2. Blend Directness With Context What to do: Start meetings with clear, direct goals (US style), then invite scenario-based or clarifying questions (India style). Example: In a product launch, the US PM set the objectives, then the India lead explored the “what-ifs.” This led to both faster starts and better coverage of risks. 3. Rotate Meeting Leadership What to do: Don’t let the same side run every meeting. Switch between US and India leads. Example: For weekly standups, the India manager led one week and surfaced local blockers; the US PM led the next, driving focus on customer results. Both perspectives became visible, and engagement soared. 4. Build Feedback Loops That Actually Work What to do: Teach both sides to give feedback in each other’s style—direct, but always constructive. Make feedback a routine, not a surprise. Example: Teams closed every sprint with a “Start/Stop/Continue” check-in. The US team practiced softening feedback; India team practiced being more candid. Trust and psychological safety improved quickly. 5. Celebrate Shared Wins—And Shared Learnings What to do: Shine a spotlight on successes that happened because of your differences. Example: When India’s process rigor averted a risk, it was celebrated in a global town hall. When the US team’s “just try it” mindset led to a breakthrough, that was spotlighted too. Both became team best practices. The best India-US teams don’t just “manage around” culture—they make it their competitive advantage.     During my career, I had the opportunity to build a team dedicated to supporting learning needs for a global audience. For the first time, I collaborated with someone who operated fully remotely. Our first in-person meeting took place nearly two years later, but by then, we had already formed a strong team. Despite our different time zones, we consistently met our commitments together. This experience is truly unforgettable for me. Oncourse, managing a diverse team with both remote and in-office members can be quite a balancing act. It's essential to ensure that everyone feels connected, engaged, and empowered to give their best. Here are a few approaches that have worked well for me: 📍Clear Communication: Regular, transparent communication is key. Leveraging various tech tools keeps everyone informed and connected. 📍Flexible Work Arrangements: Promoting a flexible work style allows team members to adapt to their schedules while feeling fully supported. 📍Team-Building Activities: Organizing virtual or in-person events helps build camaraderie and strengthen team relationships. 📍Recognition and Appreciation: Celebrating achievements, no matter the location, boosts morale significantly. A little acknowledgment can make a big difference. 📍Trust and empowerment: Trust your team members to handle their responsibilities.
