    WIPO’s global report on IP filings is out and records are being broken. 2024 saw the highest ever patent filings – 3.7 million worldwide. Design filings also peaked at a record 1.6 mln, while trademark filings stabilized after two years of decline. But within this rich trove of data from nearly 150 IP offices, a few deeper insights stand out. First, emerging and developing countries continue to embrace IP-driven growth and transformation, whether driven by the need to diversify engines of growth, support increasing aspirations of local innovators and entrepreneurs, create more attractive investment environments, or simply seek new sources of growth. For the sixth consecutive year, India posts double-digit growth in patent filings, with Türkiye also up some 15%. Among the top 20 countries of origin, 12 saw increases in trademark filings, led by Argentina, Brazil and Indonesia, and with strong growth in upper middle-income economies like Colombia, South Africa, Thailand and Viet Nam. Design filings tell a similar story, with the fastest growth in India, Morocco and Indonesia. What this means is that many emerging economies are following the path of the world’s established innovation powerhouses in using IP as a strategic lever for economic growth, diversification, development and resilience. The next challenge is commercializing more of these filings, so they become real-world products and services. Second, we’re seeing more domestic, or “resident” filings. In areas like trademarks and designs, resident filings have traditionally made up the vast majority (+70%) as local businesses often register IP to protect brands and designs serving domestic markets. Now, we’re seeing the same dynamics in patents. Resident patent filings grew almost 7% last year, the fastest rise since 2016, to 72% of the total. This growth in domestic filings suggests that innovation ecosystems are maturing (even for high-tech discoveries, inventors typically file at home first before expanding abroad). It may also reflect shifts in global trade flows, with some industries becoming more localized. Third, many of the major trends in recent years continue to accelerate. Just as AI and digital innovation dominate the headlines, computer technology remains the top field for patent activity, with its growth outpacing all others. The gender balance in innovation is also improving. The proportion of women inventors in international patent applications has increased from 11.6% in 2010 to 18% last year. Beyond the individual data points, the value of this report lies in what it reveals about the global state of innovation and the direction it’s heading. This year’s WIPI shows that people everywhere continue to believe in the power of IP to protect ideas and incentivize innovation, and it gives WIPO the energy to continue strengthening IP ecosystems everywhere to give these innovators and creators the tools to protect and commercialize their ideas. 🔗 https://ow.ly/gub150XqnE7

    #Batteries are starting to dominate the evening peak in California's grid, charging up with daytime solar then discharging as solar ramps down. On 5th April they set another new record for share of supply, peaking at over 34% at 7pm. This represents a rapid progression - two years ago the record was just 13%. And they remained the largest source of supply on the grid from 6:35pm until 9:40pm. As more and more battery storage enters the mix, batteries will continue to play an increasing role in the state's grid, and continue to break more records. They are flexible and extremely quick to respond. By charging in the middle of the day they are soaking up excess solar and are then putting this to good use later, reducing the need for gas and imports in the nighttime hours. From just 0.5 GW in 2018, by late 2024 California already had over 13 GW of battery storage capacity, with more on the way. While that may sound like a lot, there is still some way to go with the California Energy Commission estimating the state will need around 52 GW of battery storage to meet it's 2045 target of getting all its power from carbon-free sources. Batteries will play an important role in the decarbonised grid of the future. As prices continue to fall we will see more and more batteries deployed, and are certainly seeing this happen in Australia - especially Western Australia.     Ever heard of the Lippitt-Knoster Model for Managing Complex Change? It's a classic in the change management world, laying out the essential pieces needed to navigate big transformations. Taking a cue from that, I've adapted it to fit the world of digital transformation. There are seven key elements you can't afford to miss: Vision, Strategy, Objectives, Capabilities, Architecture, Roadmap, and Projects & Programs. Skip any one of these, and you're asking for trouble. Here’s why each one matters: • 𝐕𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧: This is the 'what' of your transformation. A clear vision gives everyone a target to aim for, aligning all efforts and keeping the team focused. • 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐲: Think of this as the 'why' and 'how.' A solid strategy explains the logic behind your vision, showing how you plan to get there and why it's the best route. It’s designed to guide everyone in the company on how to make decisions that support the vision, aligning all efforts and keeping the team focused. • 𝐎𝐛𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬: These are your milestones. Clear, specific objectives make it easy to measure success and ensure everyone knows what's important. Without them, you can easily veer off course and waste resources. • 𝐂𝐚𝐩𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬: These are what your company will now be able to do that it wasn't able to before in order to achieve the objectives. These can be organizational capabilities (like improved decision-making), technical capabilities (such as real-time operational visibility), or other types like enhanced customer engagement or streamlined processes. • 𝐀𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞: A robust architecture ensures all your tech works together smoothly, preventing inefficiencies and costly headaches. This includes various types of architecture such as data architecture, IT infrastructure architecture, enterprise architecture, and functional architecture. Effective architecture is central to reducing technical debt and aligning software with broader business transformation goals. • 𝐑𝐨𝐚𝐝𝐦𝐚𝐩: Your roadmap is the game plan. It lays out the sequence of actions, helping you avoid uncertainty and missteps. It's your guide to getting things done right. • 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐬 & 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐬: These are where the rubber meets the road. Actionable projects and programs turn your strategy into reality, making sure your plans lead to real, tangible outcomes. From my experience, I think '𝐂𝐚𝐩𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬' and '𝐑𝐨𝐚𝐝𝐦𝐚𝐩' are the two most overlooked.     Should you try Google’s famous “20% time” experiment to encourage innovation? We tried this at Duolingo years ago. It didn’t work. It wasn’t enough time for people to start meaningful projects, and very few people took advantage of it because the framework was pretty vague. I knew there had to be other ways to drive innovation at the company. So, here are 3 other initiatives we’ve tried, what we’ve learned from each, and what we're going to try next. 💡 Innovation Awards: Annual recognition for those who move the needle with boundary-pushing projects. The upside: These awards make our commitment to innovation clear, and offer a well-deserved incentive to those who have done remarkable work. The downside: It’s given to individuals, but we want to incentivize team work. What’s more, it’s not necessarily a framework for coming up with the next big thing. 💻 Hackathon: This is a good framework, and lots of companies do it. Everyone (not just engineers) can take two days to collaborate on and present anything that excites them, as long as it advances our mission or addresses a key business need. The upside: Some of our biggest features grew out of hackathon projects, from the Duolingo English Test (born at our first hackathon in 2013) to our avatar builder. The downside: Other than the time/resource constraint, projects rarely align with our current priorities. The ones that take off hit the elusive combo of right time + a problem that no other team could tackle. 💥 Special Projects: Knowing that ideal equation, we started a new program for fostering innovation, playfully dubbed DARPA (Duolingo Advanced Research Project Agency). The idea: anyone can pitch an idea at any time. If they get consensus on it and if it’s not in the purview of another team, a cross-functional group is formed to bring the project to fruition. The most creative work tends to happen when a problem is not in the clear purview of a particular team; this program creates a path for bringing these kinds of interdisciplinary ideas to life. Our Duo and Lily mascot suits (featured often on our social accounts) came from this, as did our Duo plushie and the merch store. (And if this photo doesn't show why we needed to innovate for new suits, I don't know what will!) The biggest challenge: figuring out how to transition ownership of a successful project after the strike team’s work is done. 👀 What’s next? We’re working on a program that proactively identifies big picture, unassigned problems that we haven’t figured out yet and then incentivizes people to create proposals for solving them. How that will work is still to be determined, but we know there is a lot of fertile ground for it to take root.     About a year ago, I created a comprehensive graphic comparing the major cloud providers. As I revisit it now, I'm struck by the rapid evolution of the cloud landscape. While each provider's core competencies remain largely unchanged, there have been some significant developments and emerging trends. Let's dive in! 1. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗠𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶-𝗖𝗹𝗼𝘂𝗱: Increasingly, businesses are adopting a multi-cloud approach, cherry-picking services from different providers to optimize costs, avoid vendor lock-in, and take advantage of each platform's unique offerings. This shift towards a more diverse and flexible cloud strategy is a testament to the growing maturity of the market. 2. 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲: In response to the pressing need for environmental action, the big three cloud providers have all stepped up their sustainability efforts. From renewable energy initiatives to tools that help customers monitor and reduce their carbon footprint, the cloud is becoming greener. 3. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗜/𝗠𝗟 𝗕𝗼𝗼𝗺: Artificial intelligence and machine learning have seen explosive growth, with each provider offering an expanding array of AI/ML services. These tools are becoming more user-friendly and accessible, democratizing AI and enabling businesses of all sizes to harness its power.     4. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀: Edge computing has come into its own, with Azure Arc, AWS Outposts, and Google Anthos all seeing significant enhancements. This development is crucial for IoT, real-time data processing, and low-latency applications. As the intelligent edge continues to evolve, it's opening up exciting new possibilities. 🚀 5. S𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗦𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆: Serverless computing has been a game-changer, abstracting away infrastructure management and enabling developers to focus on writing code. Over the past year, serverless offerings have continued to mature, with improved tooling, easier integration, and more robust functionalities. As always, the "best" cloud provider is the one that aligns with your unique requirements, existing infrastructure, and long-term objectives.     🚛 WHEN TRANSPORT LEARNS TO THINK GREEN I came across a concept today that stopped me — an autonomous hydrogen truck-trailer drone designed for long-distance freight. At first, it looked like another futuristic vehicle. But then it hit me: this isn’t just transport evolving — it’s intent evolving. For decades, we’ve designed logistics around speed and scale. Now we’re finally designing around sustainability. This new concept merges autonomy, aerodynamics, and hydrogen power to do something radical: → Eliminate carbon emissions in heavy freight. → Cut operational energy costs through intelligent routing. → Reduce highway congestion with coordinated drone convoys. It’s not just engineering — it’s a shift in philosophy. A move from moving faster to moving responsibly. We often talk about “green tech” as a feature — but the real shift happens when sustainability becomes the invisible infrastructure behind innovation. It’s not an addition to progress. It is progress. What’s needed now isn’t more invention — it’s integration. We need to: ✅ Build networks where clean energy and automation reinforce each other. ✅ Redefine “efficiency” to include environmental balance. ✅ Shift from carbon offsetting to carbon prevention at design level. Because the next breakthrough won’t come from faster engines — but from systems that make waste impossible by design.     We may be standing at a moment in time for Quantum Computing that mirrors the 2017 breakthrough on transformers – a spark that ignited the generative AI revolution 5 years later. With recent advancements from Google, Microsoft, IBM and Amazon in developing more powerful and stable quantum chips, the trajectory of QC is accelerating faster than many of us expected.   Google’s Sycamore and next gen Willow chips are demonstrating increasing fidelity. Microsoft’s pursuit of topological qubits using Majorana particles promises longer coherence times and IBM’s roadmap is pushing towards modular error corrected systems. These aren’t just incremental steps, they are setting the stage for scalable, fault tolerant quantum machines.   Quantum systems excel at simulating the behavior of molecules and materials at atomic scale, solving optimization problems with exponentially large solution spaces and modeling complex probabilistic systems – tasks that could take classical supercomputers millennia. For example, accurately simulating protein folding or discovering new catalysts for carbon capture are well within quantum’s potential reach.   If scalable QC is just five years away, now is the time to ask : What would you do differently today, if quantum was real tomorrow ?. That question isn’t hypothetical – it’s an invitation to start rethinking foundational problems in chemistry, logistics, finance, AI and cryptography.   Of course building quantum systems is notoriously hard. Fragile qubits, error correction and decoherence remain formidable challenges. But globally public and private institutions are pouring resources into cracking these problems. I was in LA today visiting the famous USC Information Sciences Institute where cutting edge work on QC is underway and the energy is palpable.   This feels like a pivotal moment. One where future shaping ideas are being tested in real labs. Just as with AI, the future belongs to those preparing for it now. QC Is an area of emphasis at Visa Research and I hope it is part of how other organizations are thinking about the future too.

    It’s an incredible time to be a leader. No two days are the same with new ideas and challenges coming at you all the time.    Each year, for the last ten years, we’ve spoken to over 1,300 CEOs from across various industries, countries and continents to better understand what drives them, how they are navigating challenges and their views on the greatest risks to growth, as part of our #CEOoutlook survey.    This year’s survey reveals that while confidence in the global economy remains high, it has waned – from 93 percent in 2015 to 72 percent today. Despite this, business leaders continue to show impressive resolve in steering their companies through this era of volatility and transformation. Their strategies and priorities offer a glimpse into the decade ahead.    From the economic and social shockwaves of the pandemic to surging inflation, geopolitical tensions and the rise of AI, leaders have had to adapt to several once-in-a-generation moments happening all at the same time.    The magnitude of these challenges has redefined leadership, requiring CEOs to be more resilient, agile and innovative than ever before.    For me, CEOs navigating the next decade will face four key things: a bold embrace of AI, a renewed commitment to ESG and sustainability as a source of value creation, a deep focus on their people, and an ability to balance competing stakeholder demands.    AI stands at the heart of the current CEO agenda and it’s part of every single conversation I have with our clients. This year’s findings show that 64 percent of CEOs are prioritizing investment in the technology.    However, this optimism is tempered by a sobering view of the immediate impacts. A significant majority (76 percent) of CEOs believe #AI will not fundamentally alter job numbers yet only 38 percent feel their employees are prepared and ready with the skills they need to fully reap the benefits. So, while AI has tremendous transformative potential, its success rests on aligning the rapid technological developments with workforce readiness and ethical considerations.    Another big feature from the last decade has been the rise of #ESG considerations, shifting from a peripheral concern to a central strategic pillar. Nearly a quarter of CEOs see failing to meet ESG targets as a significant competitive disadvantage. Despite the growing politicization of the issues, 76 percent are willing to make tough decisions, such as divesting profitable but reputation-damaging parts of their business to uphold their commitments.   The next decade will, without a doubt, produce its own storms. Treating them like children who need constant supervision is not just demeaning – it's counterproductive. However, it's crucial to maintain a balance. While micromanagement is detrimental, companies still need to ensure discipline and focus on key priorities. The goal is to empower employees while aligning their efforts with organizational objectives. That’s why one needs to focus on result-focused management: 1. Shift your metrics: Focus on project milestones, work quality, and client satisfaction instead of hours logged. 2. Embrace flexibility: Allow flexible hours and remote work when possible. Trust employees to manage their time effectively. 3. Cultivate a culture of trust: Communicate openly about priorities and challenges. Reward results, not face time. Promote work-life balance and well-being. Companies like Netflix, Basecamp, and Atlassian have implemented results-only work environments (ROWE) with remarkable success. They report higher employee engagement, better outcomes, and a more dynamic, innovative workplace culture.
