I don't like the word "delegate". We stopped "delegating" at Grüns. Here's what we do instead, and how it helped us scale to $100M+ of revenue in just two years. Most managers are obsessed with delegation. They read books about it. Attend seminars on it. Pride themselves on being "great delegators." But delegation is broken. Here's why: When you delegate, you're still the owner. You're handing someone a task but keeping the accountability. It's like giving someone the keys to your car but insisting that you sit in the passenger seat. At Grüns, we don't delegate. We EMPOWER. The difference? ❌ Delegation says: "Do this task for me." ✅ Empowerment says: "You own this outcome." ❌ Delegation creates dependence. ✅ Empowerment creates leaders. ❌ Delegation keeps you in the loop. ✅ Empowerment gets you out of the way. If you're a manager feeling overwhelmed, you might be delegating. Try to empower instead. If every decision and idea has to flow through you, your company won't grow. The results of empowerment? We grew to $100M+ in annual revenue in just two years. I went from 100-hour weeks to having 2 direct reports (although, I will have 4 direct reports soon 👀). One of the biggest myths in business is that empowerment is simply about “giving people more responsibility.” In reality, real empowerment happens when people have clarity, trust, and the right tools. Empowering Your Team to Conquer Challenges 💪 Every team faces challenges (like climbing up the switchbacks in the photo and then climbing the mountain!), but the truly great ones don't let them stop them. They have the ability to overcome obstacles and emerge stronger than ever. But how do you cultivate that kind of resilience in your team? Here are a few tips: 1. Create a Culture of Open Communication: Encourage open and honest communication, where team members feel comfortable expressing their ideas, concerns, and frustrations. Be receptive to feedback and actively listen to their suggestions. 2. Foster Collaboration: When faced with a challenge, bring your team together. Utilize their diverse skills and perspectives to brainstorm solutions collaboratively. Encourage healthy debate and respect different view points. 3. Empowering them to overcome challenges independently will make them even more resilient in the long run. 6. Lead by Example: As a leader, set the tone for resilience. Show your team that you are confident, resourceful, and committed to overcoming difficulties. Share stories of past challenges you've faced and what you learned from the experience. 7. Encourage a Growth Mindset: Encourage your team to adopt a growth mindset, believing that their abilities can be developed through hard work and effort. This will help them approach challenges with a positive and solutions-oriented mindset. 8. Celebrate Successes: Recognizing and celebrating successes, large and small, is crucial to maintaining team morale and motivation. Highlight your team's achievements and show them the impact of their hard work. In my case it was getting to the top with my friend Lynn Noyce (teammate) and taking in the view. When mentoring young leaders or executives, I’m often asked, “What are the top four or five actions I can take to create an environment where people feel valued, empowered, and motivated to contribute their best work?” Let’s first establish that leadership is complex. Agreed. However, with that said, here are my five go-to areas of leadership development that can help any leader motivate and empower their team: ◾ Start by leading with empathy. Understand the unique strengths and challenges each team member faces. Recognize their efforts publicly and provide constructive feedback privately. ◾ Always lead with vision. Your command-and-control style has merits, particularly in situations requiring strict compliance and efficiency. However, it's important to note that promoting an environment of empowerment can drive even greater performance by unlocking your team's full potential and inspiring confidence in the transition. Here's how you can transition to a more empowering leadership style without compromising performance: 1️⃣ Recognize your team members' strengths and competencies.
