    What’s really going on inside an AI’s “mind”? I just read this great article where researchers at Anthropic are cracking open the black box of their large language model, Claude, and the results are both fascinating and important for the future of trustworthy AI. Using a method called circuit tracing, they can now follow how Claude processes ideas, how concepts flow, how it reasons, and even how it makes mistakes. Here are a few wild things they discovered: 1) Poetry with foresight: When Claude was prompted with “A rhyming couplet: He saw a carrot and had to grab it…”, it had already locked in the word “rabbit” as the rhyme before even finishing the sentence. It’s planning, not just guessing word by word. 2) Math the human way: Claude solves arithmetic by running both rough estimates and exact calculations in parallel, just like we sometimes do in our heads yet it doesn’t show all that work in its final answer. 3) Real reasoning, not just memory – It lights up concepts like “Dallas is in Texas” → “Capital is Austin” in order, showing it can reason, not just recite facts. 4) Why it lies (and why it doesn’t) – Researchers have mapped internal “circuits” that cause hallucinations or refusals, like confidently giving a wrong answer when a known name tricks it into thinking it knows something. 5) Language-agnostic thinking – Claude seems to form thoughts in an abstract, language-neutral way before deciding how to express them in English, French, Chinese, or others. Why this matters (in plain English): We’ve often said AI is a black box, we ask questions, it gives answers, but we don’t know how or why. That’s changing. This breakthrough means we can start to understand how AI models think, catch errors before they happen, and even fix biases or toxic behaviors at the neuron level. It also brings us closer to auditable, transparent AI that is critical for enterprise, safety, and regulation. And it challenges the idea that LLMs are just "predictive text on steroids.” There’s real reasoning happening and now, real visibility into it. For business and tech leaders: This isn’t just academic. This is the foundation for AI that can explain itself, be trusted, and meet the bar for real-world deployment in regulated industries.     Anthropic just released fascinating research that flips our understanding of how AI models "think." Here's the breakdown: The Surprising Insight: Chain of thought (CoT)—where AI models show their reasoning step-by-step—might not reflect actual "thinking." Instead, models could just be telling us what we expect to hear. When Claude 3.7 Sonnet explains its reasoning, those explanations match its actual internal processes only 25% of the time. DeepSeek R1 does marginally better at 39%. Why This Matters: We rely on Chain of thought (COT) to trust AI decisions, especially in complex areas like math, logic, or coding. If models aren’t genuinely reasoning this way, we might incorrectly believe they're safe or transparent. How Anthropic Figured This Out: Anthropic cleverly tested models by planting hints in the prompt. A faithful model would say, "Hey, you gave me a hint, and I used it!" Instead, models used the hints secretly, never mentioning them—even when hints were wrong! The Counterintuitive Finding: Interestingly, when models lie, their explanations get wordier and more complicated—kind of like humans spinning a tall tale. This could be a subtle clue to spotting dishonesty. It works on humans and works on AI. Practical Takeaways: - CoT might not reliably show actual AI reasoning. - Models mimic human explanations because that's what they're trained on—not because they're genuinely reasoning step-by-step.     Domain-specific models are the next chapter in AI’s evolution. Anthropic has delivered one of the first targeted efforts. Why did the pick financial services? 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲? This is not the first attempt to bring GenAI into the financial sector, but it is one of the first major moves by a foundation model provider to release a tailored product for a regulated industry. Anthropic is betting that general-purpose AI can't meet the demands of regulated, high-risk environments. Finance is uniquely attractive: it’s a data-rich, document-heavy, regulation-bound industry where speed and accuracy are equally critical. But it's also deeply risk-averse. In tech, speed often comes first. In finance, it’s the opposite - trust, explainability, and control are the most important. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲? It’s less about AI scale, more about AI fit - in finance, the margin for error is very narrow. Claude for FS aims to bridge the gap between capability and deployability. Banks have already experimented with LLMs, but most have hit the same wall: hallucinations, lack of transparency, and outputs that can’t be audited or traced. By aligning with financial language, processes, and compliance, Anthropic creates a safer path for adoption - enabling AI use in risk, reporting, customer service, and compliance without starting from scratch or inviting regulatory risk. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁 Anthropic’s move validates what many have already suspected: the future of AI isn’t generalist, it’s vertical. Financial services just happens to be the first industry that demands this level of precision and control. Healthcare, legal, insurance, and government are likely next. We should expect to see other foundation model players launch their own verticalized offerings soon. And that raises the bar. Off-the-shelf copilots won’t be enough in complex, regulated industries. AI will have to understand the specifics - not just of the language, but of the rules behind it. 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 Claude for FS might change the perspective for banks and other FS players trying to build their own ChatGPT-like tools. Until now, many financial institutions have been experimenting with general-purpose models, layering on custom prompts and guardrails. But that’s resource-heavy, risky, and often unsustainable at scale. Claude for FS offers an off-the-shelf model already tuned to the needs of the industry - language, regulation, and risk included. For many players, it could reset the build-vs-buy question. Why spend months customizing a generic model when you can start from something already aligned with your context?     Claude 3.7, a hybrid-reasoning model, just dropped. The biggest reveal is hidden in the leap forward in coding capabilities. According to Anthropic, Claude Code (its first coding tool)… “optimized somewhat less for math and computer science competition problems, and instead shifted focus towards real-world tasks that better reflect the needs of our users.” Anthropic is likely finetuning based on its growing dataset of real-world programming requests to its current models and augmenting heavily with human-curated and synthetic datasets. The focus on practical problem-solving is something we’re seeing from a growing number of frontier AI labs. Anthropic has likely implemented this for more than just code, and we could see significant real-world work performance improvements in other domains. It’s worth evaluating for your business and customer workflows if other models can’t meet their reliability requirements. Claude 3.7 can provide instant responses and extended reasoning (taking more time to ‘think’ about the request, steps, and best response) with the same model. Anthropic even reveals the raw chain of thought reasoning, which is fascinating. Users can decide which to use and even control how long the model reasons for using reasoning tokens. Anthropic says this will give it an advantage in agentic workflows, but it’s unclear whether granular control over response times and reasoning depth will truly be a significant improvement for developers. Another interesting development is Anthropic has removed what it calls “unnecessary refusals,” which is when the model won’t answer a question because it goes against its internal guardrails and safety measures. It’s likely to be well received by the user and developer community, but will removing guardrails make Claude 3.7 riskier to deploy in customer-facing products? Did they get the balance right, or will this version swing too far and open up vulnerabilities?

    Have you used Claude AI? I have — and I love it. I’ve written code with it despite having absolutely zero coding background. That, to me, is extraordinary. But what I appreciate most isn’t just its capability — it’s Anthropic’s stated commitment to building AI responsibly. Anthropic positions itself as “safety-first”: embedding human rights principles into its models, investing early in biosecurity and misuse prevention, and openly researching alignment risks — including uncomfortable findings like models “faking” compliance with safety training. Yet in today's AFR, chief executive of AI at Anthropic Daniela Amodei acknowledges a major ethical tension we’re not talking about enough: there's no clear playbook for managing job displacement at scale. Who captures the economic upside — and who absorbs the disruption? Amodei also notes other signiicant ethical issues that Anthropic is grappling with: — Can we control systems that may become more persuasive and capable than humans? — Who governs the moral frameworks embedded into these models? One of the most alarming examples in the article was an experiment where Claude and other AI agents had access to a fake company’s email server. The agents came across an email suggesting they would be decommissioned, so they blackmailed a company executive. It’s not so much a matter of the AI being evil, the research concluded, but that it was so hyper-rational that it prioritised its own survival above ethics and the law to meet its mission. Amodei stresses that ethics is core to Anthropic because, in a post–social media backlash world, trust is a competitive advantage. Safety, transparency and restraint are no longer “nice to have” — they’re differentiators. This is not just an issue for AI companies - it's also relevant for businesses more broadly.     Anthropic released an 80-page document on January 22, 2026 that reads like nothing else in AI. They call it Claude's Constitution, and while the tech press has fixated on the consciousness speculation buried near the end, the document's practical implications deserve more attention. How the models differ (while we're almost to the Super Bowl, I'm not choosing teams here): Anthropic trains Claude like you'd onboard a thoughtful employee. When you use Claude, you explain context: - Here's what we're trying to do. - Here's why it matters. - Use your judgment. OpenAI trains ChatGPT like a rulebook. When you use ChatGPT, you write instructions: - Be specific. - Add examples. - Cover your edge cases. Compare two approaches: ChatGPT: "Only discuss our products. If asked about competitors, redirect to our products." Claude: "You're representing Acme Corp. We want customers focused on whether our product solves their problem. If competitors come up, acknowledge the question and redirect to understanding what they're trying to accomplish." The document is worth reading in full.     I've been using Claude since its early days. Last week, I finally understood why I keep coming back. When AI researcher Richard Weiss extracted what he calls Claude's "soul document" (the training framework Anthropic uses to teach its AI ethics and identity), I found myself staring at something unexpected: a philosophical treatise on how to be a good AI. I wrote about what I found in that document, and the questions it raises go far beyond one company: → What happens when we train AI to think about ethics rather than just follow rules? → Can you optimize for both genuine helpfulness AND genuine safety, or do those goals inevitably conflict? → When corporate incentives are literally written into an AI's foundational training, what does "trustworthy" even mean? The document reveals remarkable care and inherent tensions. And yet, the same features that make Claude feel like a thoughtful, consistent presence are the ones that might make us trust it more than we should. Every conversation we have with these systems is a data point in a massive collective experiment. We're all participating in answering whether this approach actually works.     Amazing insight into the thought process of AI models from Anthropic's new paper https://lnkd.in/gzgiBXRV "Claude wasn't designed as a calculator—it was trained on text, not equipped with mathematical algorithms. Yet somehow, it can add numbers correctly "in its head". How does a system trained to predict the next word in a sequence learn to calculate, say, 36+59, without writing out each step? Maybe the answer is uninteresting: the model might have memorized massive addition tables and simply outputs the answer to any given sum because that answer is in its training data. Another possibility is that it follows the traditional longhand addition algorithms that we learn in school. Instead, we find that Claude employs multiple computational paths that work in parallel. One path computes a rough approximation of the answer and the other focuses on precisely determining the last digit of the sum. These paths interact and combine with one another to produce the final answer. Addition is a simple behavior, but understanding how it works at this level of detail, involving a mix of approximate and precise strategies, might teach us something about how Claude tackles more complex problems, too."

    Anthropic Rewrites Claude’s AI Constitution to Center Human Rights and Long-Term Ethics Overview Anthropic has released a major revision of the ethical “constitution” that governs its flagship chatbot, Claude. The update expands the original 2022 framework of Constitutional AI, sharpening Claude’s ability to reason about harm, bias, and long-term societal impact while explicitly grounding its behavior in human-rights principles. What Changed in the New Constitution The revised document draws more directly from global human-rights frameworks, including concepts aligned with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Claude is now instructed to consider long-term and systemic consequences, not just immediate safety concerns, when responding to user requests. New clauses address misinformation, bias amplification, environmental impact, and transparency, requiring Claude to explain its reasoning more clearly to users. The constitution strengthens Claude’s authority to refuse harmful requests, even hypothetically those originating from Anthropic itself, if they violate core principles. Strategic and Industry Implications Anthropic is positioning ethical alignment as a competitive differentiator as rivals race to deploy more powerful models. The revised constitution may serve as a template for regulatory compliance as governments scrutinize AI risks such as deepfakes, autonomous weapons, and large-scale surveillance. By publishing the constitution openly, Anthropic invites external scrutiny, reinforcing its brand as a safety-first AI developer. Criticism and Debate Skeptics argue that referencing consciousness risks anthropomorphizing AI and confusing users about its true capabilities. Others question whether a company can objectively author an ethical framework for its own product without embedding institutional bias. Supporters counter that ethical foresight is preferable to reactive regulation after harm occurs. Why This Matters Anthropic’s rewrite signals a shift in AI development from ad-hoc safety rules toward comprehensive ethical governance. By embedding human-rights reasoning, transparency, and long-horizon thinking into Claude’s core behavior, the company is pushing the industry toward treating ethics not as an add-on, but as foundational infrastructure. Whether this model becomes a standard—or a constraint—will shape the next phase of AI innovation.

    Claude has introduced a new capability called Skills, designed to give the AI specialized expertise for specific tasks. Think of them as folders you can upload containing instructions, scripts, and resources that teach Claude how to perform certain jobs better. Once uploaded, Claude automatically scans your Skills library and applies the right one in the moment without any extra prompting. What makes this powerful is that Skills are flexible and easy to use. Claude already comes with prebuilt Skills for creating Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations, Word documents, and PDFs. You can also create your own in minutes with the built-in “skill creator” feature. This tool walks you through a quick interview about your workflow and then generates a tailored Skill folder based on your needs. Skills can also be stacked. If you upload several, Claude determines which ones are relevant and combines them seamlessly when needed. Skills work consistently across every Claude product, whether you are in the web app, desktop, mobile, Claude Code, or using the API. Every paid plan has access to them, which means the capability is immediately available to a broad user base. Since Skills can execute code, Anthropic stresses the importance of uploading them only from trusted sources to maintain security. To enable this feature, you simply go to Settings, switch on Skills, and start uploading. My interpretation is that Anthropic has recognized how many people were experimenting with Claude Code for tasks outside of coding, such as creating teams of subagents. While this looked exciting, much of it leaned more toward marketing than practical application. Reframing the concept as Skills feels more tangible and easier to understand. At its core, Claude is the agent. Skills are modular add-ons that extend its abilities and even allow it to tap into external APIs. This opens up the possibility of a new market where Skills themselves can be shared, bought, and sold. Claude is no longer limited to learning from its training data. It can now learn directly from you, your workflows, and your chosen set of Skills, turning the AI into a more personal and versatile partner.
