The Human Side of the Algorithm 🧠

Quick take from someone who has spent 12+ years building and instrumenting large-scale data systems behind consumer products:

You may have seen the recent headline where Instagram’s CEO said social media isn’t “clinically addictive.” That distinction actually matters. As engineers designing ranking, notification, and recommendation systems, we should be precise about both language and incentives.

A few realities worth keeping in mind:

Algorithms don’t have intent. They optimize the objective functions we define - watch time, CTR, DAU, retention. When those objectives correlate with repeated or compulsive usage patterns, the system can create addiction-like behavior even if no one explicitly designed it that way.

Optimization is not the same as clinical diagnosis. Clinical addiction is a medical determination with defined criteria and treatment pathways. Engagement metrics are behavioral signals - useful for product decisions, but not substitutes for clinical assessment.

Feedback loops are powerful. Reinforcement learning, recommendation bandits, and continuous A/B tuning create rapid amplification loops. Small adjustments in ranking models or notification cadence can meaningfully reshape daily user behavior at scale.

Measurement shapes outcomes. If well-being matters, engagement cannot be the only north star. Teams should instrument for additional outcomes: session spacing, meaningful interaction quality, frictionless churn, sleep-disruption proxies, long-term retention vs. short-term spikes, and heterogeneous cohort effects.

Practical steps for product and data teams:

  • Use randomized experiments and causal inference to evaluate whether features cause harm, not just correlate with engagement.
  • Track secondary welfare-aligned metrics such as satisfaction, meaningful interactions, and healthy usage patterns.
  • Introduce intentional friction where appropriate (rate limits, notification batching, healthier defaults).
  • Maintain transparency through feature audits, explainability, and external review where possible.

We can acknowledge the nuance in leadership messaging while still pushing ourselves toward better measurement, safer defaults, and more responsible optimization.
