Here’s a behind-the-scenes walkthrough from Confluence designers Natalie Johnson and Eden Gorton on their application of these principles: 1) Extend what already works - leverage a common design system for both humans and agents, so users do not need to relearn anything 2) Agents appear wherever humans do - this naturally involves a ton of trade-offs between visibility and UI density, but we're aiming to find that sweet spot for comprehension 3) Make it easy to 'Pop the hood' - you should be able to drill down and see the specific moment of a particular edit Agentic Confluence is a hugely powerful and exciting phase shift for teams, and I hope hearing from the designers communicates the care (debates and all) that is going into the change.

We talked about using agents in Jira, creating content with Rovo in Confluence, and how easily Loom can help QA a bug with a quick video. But the real magic is how it all works together. Using AI to take care of some of the work so teams can spend more time on the problems that matter most. Ever had a project that made you feel like Nacho Libre putting on his stretchy pants, equal parts excited and slightly terrified? 😅 For me, some of the hardest but most rewarding projects I’ve worked on have been building compensation structures from the ground up (twice) and reimagining one completely. It’s not flashy work. It’s mostly spreadsheets, calibration sessions, and hard conversations, but it’s taught me a lot about balancing data, philosophy, and fairness. Here are some lessons I’ve learned: 👉 Align on philosophy early. Before any pricing or structure work, make sure everyone agrees on the company’s pay philosophy. It’s painful to realize halfway through that people had different assumptions about targets or approach. A little alignment early saves a lot of rework later. 👉 Respect the data, but bring the art. Market data is essential, but it doesn’t always tell the full story. Use it, question it, and look for better sources if something doesn’t make sense. At the end of the day, you’re setting pay for your company. The goal is a structure that’s logical, fair, and competitive, even if it looks a little different from the raw data. Just review carefully and avoid making changes based on one person’s whim. 👉 Get leveling right. This is the foundation. Take your time, run multiple calibration rounds, and make sure levels are fair and clearly defined. When leveling is solid, everything else flows much, much better. I’ve had the chance to put these lessons into practice at BambooHR, and I’m still learning every time I go through the process. What’s a project that stretched you, and what did it teach you?
