Andy Plesser shared thisGreat job, David KaplanAndy Plesser shared thisMany thanks to *Katie Couric for letting Beet.TV takeover her podcast studio at Horizon Media's Varick St. offices earlier this week for the AI Media Summit. (I made sure not to touch a thing.) Anyway! I got to speak with a stellar lineup of industry leaders about the practical ways AI is evolving within the confines of CTV, retail media, content and distribution, and the agency world. Horizon Media's Domenic Venuto talked about how the independent agency has maintained its human-centric approach while scaling AI capabilities; his colleagues David Campanelli dug into the shift from vanity metrics to real business outcomes, while Dane Kunkel shared thoughts on the barriers holding brands back from fully embracing a more performance-driven, AI-enabled model even as they must continue to cultivate the upper-and-mid parts of the marketing funnel, and Katy Finnin Ferguson discussed the essential value of incrementality in understanding how outcomes are delivered. (Not pictured: Horizon Media founder Bill Koenigsberg was interviewed by Andy Plesser about his 2 decades of agency evolution and what separates winning agencies in an outcomes-driven world. Pictured: I got to meet Horizon's Elisa Maggio in person!) Other interviews included Philo's Michael Keyserling on how streaming companies can compete against larger players through AI efficiency; NBCUniversal's Kristina Shepard on attention metrics in premium video environments; Albertsons Media Collective's Brian Monahan on the "couch to checkout" measurement challenge; Swivel's Frans Vermeulen on agentic AI for sell-side operations, as CEO Joseph Hirsch discussed balancing AI-driven efficiency with creative storytelling. And as always, thanks to my Beet.TV partner Nikki Fabrizio for keeping it all sane as well as fun! Speaking of which, great to catch up with Rob Williams and Tameka Kee, who were working the event room and the stage. Separately, going to include an image of IAB's Collin Colburn, who came by the main Beet.TV studio the next day in advance of the trade group's Connected Commerce Summit on April 14. And yes, me and @Beet.TV will be there for that as well. Videos drop soon on Beet.TV... stay tuned for all of it. #BeetHorizon

Hot off the press: we now offer speaker identification in our Captivate captions. For years automatic speech recognition has struggled to include statistically accurate change-of-speaker indication in live captions, usually double chevrons or dashes (>> and -). We're now not only improving that accuracy, we've incorporated a voice-imprint process to correctly add speaker names. Full speaker identification has historically been most common in sporting events, where the announcers are not frequently on camera. I personally rely on captions to tell me if I should blame >> Colinsworth: or >> Tirico: when my team loses (and they always lose). Do you notice speaker changes when you watch live captions? Does it make a difference to you to know who is speaking? It's in the FCC Caption Quality best practices I helped author over ten years ago now, but I'm curious to know viewer opinions have changed?

Huge News For Radio. More people listen to radio now than 20 years ago, but it hasn't been measured with the same precision as digital - until now. The pixel based solution from MagellenAI will measure radio attribution the same as podcasts showing the true impact of a full audio stack. https://lnkd.in/geU3XuqH

The digital switchover in the radio industry demands careful consideration, while the discussions between industry stakeholders, mobile manufacturers, and policymakers are ongoing, I believe it's essential to get it right. Transitioning from terrestrial to digital is beyond technology. Ensuring availability, scale, and policy clarity is what is going to drive the industry forward. With a vast audience of 20 crore listeners for private FM , I think a gradual shift makes sense where digital and analog radio can coexist for a while, perhaps for the next five years. If we can strike the right balance, digital radio can bring significant benefits, including measurement data and new opportunities. It has to be a level playing field, a viable solution and a win-win for everyone. This article goes into the depths of the current need to address the process of the 2025 Digital Radio Rollout. Definitely worth a read. Red FM Akanksha Nagar https://lnkd.in/g3WuVj3E

It’s not just consumers that dislike how ATSC 3.0 / NEXTGEN TV (and DRM) is being implemented. The latest round of letters to the FCC shows how low-powered broadcasters are split on whether ATSC 3.0 should be a mandatory transition. This isn’t small stakes or inside baseball. The US Smart TV market is estimated at 50.73 million units and expected to reach 68.1 million by 2030, according to Modor Intelligence. https://lnkd.in/d4NPiHgj #TV #ATSC #NEXTGENTV #BROADCAST

The transition from satellite to IP for live video infrastructure is no longer a future discussion. It’s happening now, at scale. Broadcasters, sports leagues, and OTT platforms are moving toward IP-native workflows that require performance, reliability, and operational visibility equal to, or better than, traditional distribution models. That’s why we’re excited about this collaboration between Appear and LTN. By combining the Appear X Platform with LTN’s fully managed global IP network, we’re enabling a scalable infrastructure for contribution and distribution of premium live events, designed for the most demanding live sports and broadcast environments. Great collaboration between the teams at Appear and LTN bringing this to life. Malik Khan Ed McGivern

Broadcast Management Group… • 16K followers
On opposite sides of the Atlantic, two companies– Showpower Global B.V. and Broadcast Management Group, Inc.–are tackling the same challenge: reducing the carbon footprint of large-scale productions without sacrificing performance, reliability, or impact. In entertainment, Showpower has so far helped power 65 Coldplay concerts in 16 countries entirely on batteries by deploying their SmartGrid™ system. A first for a stadium-level touring band, which has contributed to an overall 59% reduction in touring emissions compared to the band's last stadium tour. It's proof that live events on a massive scale can run cleaner, without sacrificing quality or reliability. In live television, Broadcast Management Group has applied this same spirit of innovation to space. Our work with Blue Origin’s NS-34 mission used a REMI (remote integration) model to reduce on-site crew, gear, and travel, cutting the carbon impact by 80%, while still delivering a complex, multi-camera live broadcast. As battery systems and sustainable tech like Showpower’s become more prevalent, REMI models like BMGs will only become more efficient and more environmentally impactful. The potential for a completely sustainable model—clean energy + remote production—is real, and it’s coming. Whether you’re producing a world tour or launching rockets into orbit, reducing emissions is no longer optional...it’s part of the job. #GreenProduction #LiveProduction

The power dynamic between major broadcast networks and their local affiliates is a constant source of tension. ICYMI, Jeff Westling wrote in an op-ed for TV Technology about how the current FCC media ownership rules actually weaken independent broadcasters. Jeffrey argues that lifting the national market cap would allow independent broadcast groups to achieve the scale necessary to negotiate on fairer terms with networks. This would give them more control over the content they air and provide a meaningful check on network power, ultimately benefiting local communities. CFOs and CMOs, take note. Media Monitors’ recent expansion—now covering the top 250 markets and keeping every AM/FM radio ad file permanently—marks a turning point for audio in media mix modeling. Why it matters: • Better Data, Better ROI – With 86% of AM/FM radio reach now represented, MMM and attribution models will finally give radio the credit it deserves. • Always-On Measurement – Advances in AI and tech are lowering costs, bringing MMM to more local and regional advertisers. • ROI Proof – While perception lags, Nielsen’s global benchmarks rank AM/FM radio #2 in ROI among all media. As Deloitte’s Duncan Stewart reminds us: “Nobody listens to radio anymore” is a myth. The evidence is clear—radio delivers. John Fix Pierre Bouvard José M. Broadcasting standards need to stand the test of time and cover the entire broadcast landscape: public, private, and community broadcasters. And then regulators, broadcasters and manufacturers must work together, as no regulator or government would accept the idea that one person, one “influencer,” or one group of stakeholders can have the ultimate word and vote. https://lnkd.in/eW_gwHm7
