Soulframe Gameplay and Breakdown
Character Customization in Soulframe
The first thing that players will do in Soulframe is to customize their character, this is also the step that will determine the Abilities, Stats, and starting Equipment of the Envoy. Here are the 4 things that a player will decide upon starting the game:
- Virtues - Spend 4 Points between Courage, Spirit, and Grace
- Starting Armor - Choose between Signet Leathers and Tempest Leathers
- Starting Weapon - Choose between Rivt-II (Short Blades), Vasp-IV (Polearm), and Sollos-1 (Long Blade)
- Pacts - Decide between Pact of the Feykin and Pact of the Tempest
The starting armor determines the appearance of the Envoy but it will not have any stats contribution. On the other hand, the weapons will determine how to fight the enemies, giving players a chance to choose their preferred playstyle. Virtues are the attributes or stats of the Envoy, and lastly, the Pact alters the appearance of the right arm and determines what kind of Skills and Abilities the Envoy will have. The pact can be swapped anytime at the Nightfold.
Soulframe Combat Guide
Combat Actions in Soulframe
Soulframe's combat is heavy, slow, and strategic. As the Envoy, the player will be fighting against the forces of Kingdom of Ode. They will find armored soldiers who use different types of weapons and magic to inflict damage, whereas the Envoy can also use Weapons and Abilities to deal damage. At first, the Envoy has limited options to melee range and use Dual Blades, Polearm, or Long Blade. They can also use a Bow once they find one and try the ranged combat. For new players, it is important to keep in mind that weapons accumulate experience and will increase the stats and base damage of that weapon, as well as earn points that can be used for Combat Arts for that specific weapon.
Finisher Mechanic in Soulframe
The Finisher is a mechanic that lets players execute enemies with a fixed animation such as punching, slashing, bow gutting, and thrusting with swords. The animation will change depending on the equipped weapon, and this move is not just for the cool animation, but it can be a buff for the envoy as well. The Fellust is an ability that increases the envoy's damage shortly after doing a finisher. Players can find this ability under the Pact of the Feykin.
Combat Arts in Soulframe
Combat Arts, or Weapon Arts is a progression system that determines the envoy's expertise with a specific weapon. The envoy will gain points as they use the weapon, and they can use these to unlock weapon skills which modify their attacks and gain specialized bonuses for that weapon. In Soulframe, many of the Combat Arts share a name and effect across different weapons. For example, Riposte lets the envoy attack after a successful Parry, Perfect Throw grants maximum damage when the weapon is thrown at the right moment, and Smite is a weapon skill that exposes an enemy's soul for a short duration, allowing the envoy to deal massive damage. In contrast, each weapon also have their own unique skills or weapon arts that cannot be obtained elsewhere.
To access the Combat Arts Menu, go to the Nightfold and interact with the shelf at the back of the tent. Arts can be reset and redistributed to learn a different modification (within the same weapon category). Please view the Combat Arts page to see the full list of Combat Arts in Soulframe.
Switching Weapons
The Envoy carries an arsenal with them in their adventures. Only one weapon can be equipped at a time but can be switched on the fly by going into the Nightfold. This allows the players to adjust their equipment based on the environment and the battle that they are about to face. To support this mechanic, the Envoy can also master different types of weapons just by using them. The weapons will accumulate experience while they are used in combat, and a weapon will increase in damage and stats each time they level up.
Death in Soulframe
When the Envoy dies in combat, their spirit will travel to the nearest Revive Shrine. These are checkpoints that the envoy can use when they die in combat. These are special structures activated through touch and serve as respawn points. A Revive Shrine is easily discernible due to its distinct shape and size, the overgrowth of roots, as well as the ornamental etchings on the stonehead.
The Revive Shrines can be used as an automatic respawn at the shrine itself, or seek out the fallen body by flying towards it as a sparrow, then respawn where the body is. Revive Shrines can be found throughout Midgard and the Sparrow Guide will also point out this structure if there's one nearby.
Soulframe Equipment
In Soulframe, Equipment can be looted from Chests but the more powerful ones are only available through Crafting. The Crafting can be done through Tuvalkane the Blacksmith. Just like the other Ancestors, the Blacksmith also requires completing a discovery quest before they can move to the player's Nightfold. Once the Blacksmith is unlocked, players can collect Equipment Fragments and Crafting Materials, and pay the Blacksmith to craft the item. However, players also need to wait in real time to complete the crafting, which can take up to 24 hours, per item.
Engaging Enemies in Combat
When fighting enemies in Soulframe, the Envoy will be fighting the uniformed soldiers of the Kingdom of Ode. These enemies can use different types of weapons and magic to inflict damage. The envoy can also use different types of weapons and learn different Abilities through Pacts to damage enemies. The envoy can perform basic moves with their weapon: Light Attack, Heavy / Charged Attack, and Melee Throw. The Light attack is the commonly used move, while Heavy/Charged requires timing and positioning. The Melee Throw is a mechanic that lets the envoy throw their weapons toward the direction of the enemies. The animation varies from weapon to weapon and implements a Perfect Throw to get the maximum damage. On top of this, the Envoy can also perform Kicks, Parries and Finishers. The Finisher is a special animation that executes an enemy automatically once their health drops to the threshold, while Kicks are effective in breaking the guard of enemies or pushing them toward an edge.
Status Effects
While exploring Midgard, the Envoy can encounter spirits of their ancestors that grant various effects. One example of this is the soul of Fenn Jotar. When interacted with, his spirit will imbue the sword with a fire effect and this buff persists for a short duration. The information we have is currently limited, but it appears that the buff lasts for at least 60 seconds, and until the character leaves the current dungeon. At the moment, we haven't seen other types of temporary status effects, but it is expected that there will be more spirits like this one.
Virtues or Envoy Stats in Soulframe
The Envoy Stats or Virtues serve as the foundation of a character's specialization. The Virtues are divided into four: Courage, Spirit, Grace, and Life. Each Virtue, except for Life, enhances a specific set of attributes, while Life is determined by the accumulation of the 3 Virtues. Players can customize their character's strengths and abilities based on how the points are allocated. This is a familiar system commonly used in MMORPG that determines the progress of a character.
- Courage - From Mora came strength, bravery, resolve.
- Spirit - By Iridis we knew empathy, imagination, arcanics.
- Grace - Saphene bestowed cunning, agility, insight.
- Life
A point allocated in a Virtue will impact the weapon damage based on its attunement. For instance, the Grace Virtue emphasizes attributes like Cunning, Agility, and Insight. By dedicating points to Grace, the Envoy will do more damage with Rivt-II. This point system offers players an exceptional flexibility, since Virtue Points can be reallocated at no additional cost whenever they want to switch weapons, and can be easily accessed by going into the Nightfold.
Wandering Souls in Soulframe
Wandering souls are the souls of the ancestors that can be encountered in different locations to gain buffs that will aid the envoy in combat. Once encountered, these can benefit the player by granting the player a buff that can grant a fiery sword, an additional spell slot, or a temporary bonus to Virtues or Envoy stats. Ancestors can be encountered in several locations but these are randomly generated, just like the Dungeons encountered in each location.
NPC and Ancestor Interactions
The Envoy has a chance to reunite with its fallen ancestors in Midgard. They will find them among ruins, and beneath the fallen ground. Once found, an Ancestor can be interacted with at the Nightfold. They can have their own little section, or they could be resting inside the round tent, like Fenn Jotar. Other Ancestral Spirits will require certain conditions to be met before they can be brought to the Nightfold.
In a recent update, Soulframe reworked Orlick and Tuvalkane's discovery quest. More improvements are expected to be made soon, but New Players can expect a variety in completing NPC discovery quests. On the other hand, there are simple NPCs like Fenn Jotar whose only requirement is that the envoy will reunite with their spirit beneath a well.
Soulframe Blacksmith
Tuvalkane the Blacksmith in Soulframe has a discovery quest similar to Orlick. At first, the envoy will encounter their spirit in the land, and they will require a quest to be completed before they can offer their services. Once completed, Tuvalkane will set up her shop in the player's Nightfold. As a Blacksmith, she can craft weapons using collected fragments and gathered Materials. Crafting a weapon in Soulframe requires in-game currency and real time crafting hours which can go up to 24 hours for Rare weapons.
Sparrow's Tale Short Quests
Sparrow's Tales are quick objectives that can be completed while exploring. This is a familiar concept that exists in most MMORPGs since it gives players various rewards that will help in character progression while also introducing enemies and combat situations to the player. In Soulframe, completing a Sparrow's Tale will grant experience to Pacts and Weapons, and grants rewards like Materials, Items, and Equipment Fragments. There are different kinds of Sparrow's Tale but the ones in The Dermak Undercity include Fell the Mighty: Slay the Banneret, Spoilt Plunder: Clear the Dungeon, and Treasures Yet Uncovered: Retrieve a relic of Dermak.

The available quests also change depending on the location and Glades of Andurin will have the following short quests:
- Synod’s Finest: Slay the Banneret and their patrol
- Mock Nor Moan: Destroy the Ode n’ Moaners and Mockeries
- Treasures Yet Uncovered: Retrieve an Andurian Artifact
Pacts in Soulframe
Pacts are the class system in Soulframe, and these will affect available magic abilities, as well as the core attributes and stats of the Envoy. At the start of playing Soulframe, players will have access to 2 of 3 pacts, while the 3rd one will be unlocked later on. The three pacts in Soulframe are:
A player's pact is one of the ways a character will progress. This determines the type of magical abilities the envoy will have, and the pact can be upgraded in the Nightfold. Upgrading a Pact will give the envoy abilities, skills, and combat boosts. A Pact is upgraded as the player gain experience through fighting, defeating enemies, and completing quests.
