In a game like Pokémon Legends: Z-A, with 230 total creatures to catch, it can be daunting doing it all by yourself, even if the Legends series only releases one version of each entry. Thankfully, with trading, you can finish up that Pokédex much faster.

By using community trade codes and the link play system, you can trade with other trainers and make your life a lot easier. While many Pokémon can be caught within the game's Wild Zones, a lot of them are special cases or are found elsewhere within the city.

How Trade Codes Work In Pokémon Legends: Z-A

Give A Pokémon, Leave A Pokémon

To initiate a trade code, you need to progress with the game until you unlock the Link Play option in the main menu. This happens very early in the game when you meet Mable, during Main Mission 3: A New Life in Lumiose City. All you need to do is speak to her, and you'll be good to go, as Link Play will unlock shortly after.

Think of this like a "multiplayer" section, which allows you to play ranked and private battles, alter your title, check for news, accept mystery gifts, and trade with online or local trainers. For these link codes, you're going to want to select "faraway players," which refers to online play. If you have local friends, you'll want to choose the "nearby players" option.

As for the rest, all you need to do is enter the code as shown. Note that you will want to send a Pokémon that you're not particularly attached to, as this trade code system is a faceless, one-way street. Notice that there are two sections to input a code.
