Synopsis

Gratuitous gore takes away from the story. If you are a queasy sort skip this one. Story got mottled with the gory content. Interesting ideas...but I could not watch the last 20 minutes because of how bloody and gross the characterizations became.

A modern day horror story exposing hideous culture of the entertainment industry. The Arthouse influenced style of story telling is captivating as is the direction and the intensity of the characters.
Demi Moore is fiercely bold as Elisabeth. A mesmerising performance! In my opinion, her greatest and most memorable role.

‎The Substance is a dark and emotional story that follows three main characters whose personalities shape the whole movie. Elisabeth Sparkle is an aging TV fitness star who feels forgotten and unappreciated. She is vulnerable, insecure, and desperate to feel valued again. Sue, created through the mysterious drug called “the Substance,” is the younger and more confident version of Elisabeth. She is bold, energetic, and quickly becomes everything Elisabeth believes she has lost. Harvey, the producer, is selfish and insensitive. He only cares about youth, ratings, and power, and he pushes Elisabeth into using the dangerous serum through his cruelty.The rising development builds as Elisabeth and Sue must share the same life, switching places every seven days. At first, Sue thrives in the spotlight, gaining attention and success, while Elisabeth grows weaker and jealous. Their relationship turns into a battle for control. The major plot twist comes when Sue refuses to switch back, causing the serum to malfunction and creating a monstrous fusion of both women. This shocking turn shows the danger of chasing perfection and the emotional cost of trying to become someone else.

The Substance is a dark, stylish thriller that mixes body-horror, ambition, and identity into something both disturbing and emotionally sharp. The film follows a woman who uses an experimental product “the substance” to become a younger, more ideal version of herself, but the process quickly spirals out of control. What begins as a dream makeover turns into a violent battle for control between two versions of the same person.
The movie stands out because of its intense atmosphere and fearless storytelling. The pacing stays tight, the tension builds steadily, and the visuals are bold and unsettling in a way that fits the theme. The performances sell the emotional weight, showing how far people can go to chase perfection and what happens when that desire becomes dangerous.
While the film can be shocking at times, it’s never shocking just for fun. It uses horror to explore insecurity, aging, and the pressure to reinvent yourself. That gives the story more depth than a typical thriller.
Overall, The Substance delivers a powerful mix of psychological drama and horror, with a unique concept that stays in your head long after the ending.

“The Substance” is a chilling and deeply unsettling horror film that blends body-horror with incisive social commentary. Demi Moore plays Elisabeth Sparkle, a washed-up celebrity who, desperate to reclaim her youth, turns to a black-market drug. That drug creates Sue, a younger, more vibrant version of her, played by Margaret Qualley. Dennis Quaid rounds out the main cast as Harvey, Elisabeth’s ruthless producer. The film’s grotesque transformation scenes and its exploration of identity, ageism, and vanity make it emotionally potent as well as viscerally disturbing.🍿

Wading through some tough scenes but made me think! Obviously it’s about misogyny and ageism. However, try on the heavier thought of mother/daughter relationships. That was a total surprise for me.

A peek into the TV and entertainment industry where maintenance of body & face aesthetics is sometimes a struggle.
The storyline is great with a few unexpected surprises, but far too slow in places, I nearly gave up, but the special effects are first class. Demi and Margaret performed their characters beautifully

The premise was enticing, the cinematography was captivating, the acting was stellar. Elements of modern day horror ie picture of Dorian Grey etc evoked a sense of meaning to the first half but the last 30 mins of the movie were utterly ridiculous. Too over the top and excessively gory rendering any previous intelligent debate about the excesses of Hollywood and over reliance on beauty products utterly meaningless. I also couldn't shake the focus on the male gaze, ageist and misogynistic tendencies. Watching it was torture for me
