A slow burn thriller that disguised itself as a horror film. While there are moments of genuine fright, it doesn't feel like it should be considered one. Some really great tension and atmosphere throughout, but a bit too slight on narrative.

This was so unsatisfying. You’ll be on the edge of your seat the entire time and when things reach the boiling point, stuff goes insane, but then it just falls flat and you get nothing out of it. Resulting in just a really bad time all around and a feeling of being unfulfilled. I just don’t like how this made me feel which is disappointing because I generally love A24 films. Some scenes were good, but about midway through I just almost wanted to turn it off because it just felt like I was waiting for it to get to a point that I already knew I wouldn't get.

I get what it’s going for, but just, no. I understand that sometimes just the fear itself of something can be more detrimental than the thing, but I really wanted just any kind of payoff at the end of this and it never came. Also wouldn’t really call this “horror” and that’s coming from someone who’s a baby when it comes to mildly spooky things.

The Plot: Secure within a desolate home as an unnatural threat terrorizes the world, a man has established a tenuous domestic order with his wife and son. Then a desperate young family arrives seeking refuge.

Cast: Joel Edgerton, Christopher Abbott, Carmen Ejogo

This is a first (and last) time viewing.

The Good: The actors did their jobs well in that they were who they were supposed to be in an unnamed mid-pandemic apocalypse. I suppose the things they did were sensible in context.

The Bad: It absolutely failed to have me interested in anyone in the movie at all. I knew what was coming with an hour left, but at no point did they give me anyone to root for, or care about, or feel sad about. I didn't break my 1/2 Hour Nope because there was enough premise AT the 1/2 Hour to hold my interest. It lost it.

The Alternative: I had to break down and look for movies like this one to get an answer, because I don't actually like movies like this one. The peril of going in blind, I reckon. Anyways, the suggestion that popped for me was The Empty Man, which I really enjoyed, 8/10

The Last Word: This was a movie that I watched. Is that a scathing condemnation? It is, and it is not. I can't tell you not to watch it, but I can't encourage you TO watch it.
