Mechanics

[edit | edit source]

Maps have a gameplay mechanic, or more commonly a combination of multiple mechanics. Many also have a story, and in some it is even the main focus.

Some mechanics are:

Puzzle
Puzzles to solve, using either custom features or vanilla mechanics such as redstone.
Parkour
Courses focusing primarily on movement, often with the goal of being as fast as possible. Parkours are often called Jump and Run as they usually include various jumps, such as across gaps or around blocks.
Combat
A place, such as an arena, that has one or multiple enemies to fight against. Combat against players is often called PvP (Player versus Player) and combat agains mobs is often called PvE (Player versus Entity).
There can be additionl goals that are required to win, grant an immediate win, or provide some advantage.
Survival
A world to be played in Survival Mode, with some modification, such as being in the sky.
Escape room
A room or series of rooms made of unbreakable blocks such as bedrock, with the goal of escaping in Survival Mode using in-depth knowledge of vanilla game mechanics and few items that have to be preserved as long as possible.
Dropper
A vertical build with the spawn at the top, something to break the fall such as water at the bottom, and obstacles on the way down that have to be avoided as the fall damage would be fatal.
Maps usually consist of a series of droppers, where finishing one sends players to the next with the goal being to complete all as quickly as possible.
Alternatively, landing at the bottom can make the target smaller, for example by placing a block in the water where the player landed, and send the player back up, which slowly increases the difficulty over time. Multiple players can take turn jumping, with the goal of surviving the longest.
Tycoon
A simulator with the goal of getting rich. Idle Tycoons usually feature some sort of money-making machine that can be upgraded with money to produce more money.
