If there’s one component to Subnautica 2 that’s the most important, it’s oxygen. It’s what makes the world go round (almost literally), as breathing is survival at its base level. Being on such a desolate and isolated planet, we are met with little to no above-water structures, meaning going underwater is routine.

Because of this, controlling your oxygen and best preserving it is key, but the further down you go, the less capable you become. Thankfully, there’s a way to improve this. Go hunting for material as this guide will show you exactly what you need to increase your oxygen efficiency.

Why Do You Need More Oxygen Efficiency?

Subnautica 2 Rebreather Location

One very crucial aspect of Subnautica 2 is the ability to traverse to depths you normally wouldn’t be able to. Even though you obtain an Adaptation right at the beginning of the game that lets you dive to the deepest parts of the sea without any trouble, that doesn’t mean the amount of air intake is the same.

Because of this, the further you go down, the more air you will require. So, no matter how high quality of a tank you have, obtaining something that increases your oxygen efficiency is crucial for going further down.

This is because, while you are given anywhere between 30 and 180 seconds on your O2 meter, when you hit a certain threshold underwater, your O2 depletion will basically double, ensuring that the time you have to get to the surface or an air bubble is much less than you would have hoped.

How to Get More Oxygen Efficiency?

Outside the obvious first Adaptation which allows you to dive under extreme pressure, something that a normal person wouldn’t be able to do, to increase your capability for diving, you will need one specific item: The Rebreather.

The Rebreather is something that has been a staple of the Subnautica franchise since the first game, and it makes its return to the sequel.

There are a handful of locations where you can find a Rebreather to be scanned, and thankfully you only need to find one of them. While we can list all the various locations where it’s located, we will give the simplest option from the start of the game.

As soon as you spawn from your Lifepod, your objective is to head southwest of your location. You will eventually come across what looks like the edge of the seabed, as there’s a sharp vertical cliff, and down the line some destroyed debris hanging over the side.

Continue forward and downward along the cliff. You will notice more debris on the edge of the cliff down more, and to the right a red habitat against the cliffside wall. Head inside the habitat.

Here, immediately to the right, you will find a Rebreather to scan.

Subnautica 2 Rebreather Recipe

After scanning this, head back to your Lifepod. This is where things get a little trickier. You won’t be able to craft a Rebreather in your Lifepod’s Fabricator, but instead you need to build a base. It can be a basic base, but one that has power and a Fabricator in it.

Once this is complete, you will need to collect the materials to craft this Rebuilder:

  • 2x Fiber Mesh
  • 1x System Chip

For a System Chip, it requires a Wiring Kit (Copper Wire and Silver) and two Quartz. For Fiber Mesh, you need two Fiber and Strong Acid. The latter is a little harder to get because you need to build a Processor and grind up Sulfur and Gold, which can be found to the east of the Lifepod in the hotter zone.

After all this work, you will obtain a Rebreather and be able to drop to far greater depths than ever before (unlimited at this point).
