One of the early-game missions in Subnautica 2 requires the player to do a little bit of cleanup. It would seem the underwater inhabitants, specifically those with an intelligent life, are struggling with some sort of infection.

It is now your job to clear things up by taking a Sonic Resonator from your back pocket and removing some of these unwanted infestations. This will not only help you progress the story, but will also help you traverse more humid locations, specifically ones that have a ton of thermal vents attached to them.

This early game structure needs a little bit of elbow grease, but it's worth getting it up and running.

Why Increase Your Heat Protection

Throughout the early stages of Subnautica 2, you won’t have much need of this feature. Most of the temperature in the ocean is fairly mild, with most creatures, including yourself, being able to swim around without much worry.

There is one spot in particular you will need this, though, as the area’s temperature goes well above 100 degrees when swimming through it. This is because of the volcanic activity around the area, as there are thermal vents everywhere. You’d think the further down you get, the colder the ocean becomes, but that’s not the case here.

This is located around 300 meters to the east of the Lifepod and is crucial for the story as there’s a habitat way down there that better expands the plot. With that said, you can completely avoid this area entirely, as it’s not necessarily mandatory.

You will unfortunately be missing out on some crucial information along with various materials that are required for more advanced crafting. This is because both Sulfur and Gold are prominent in these hot areas, not to mention there are a handful of steamy locations in the latter portion of the campaign far to the east (a couple kilometers).

Because of this, it’s advised to get this protection at some point, not to mention it’s not particularly difficult to do so. Note that this protection doesn’t fully resist heat, meaning if you get too close to a thermal vent, you will take damage, but you’ll be able to traverse the areas.

How to Get Heat Protection

In order to get additional heat protection, you will need to interact with another alien membrane, similar to the one you first interacted with at the beginning of the game when you woke up.

Unfortunately, this one requires a little bit of work to get. This is because there is a blooming infestation that has wrapped itself around the foreign life of this ocean, and it’s your job to get rid of it and be rewarded for it.

The first thing you will need to do, though, is obtain a Sonic Resonator. This is a very powerful tool for collecting materials, but also destroying certain nasty blooming infections.

To get this, you will need to locate Sonic Resonator fragments scattered around the first area. Once you have the blueprint, you will then need to build a base with a Habitat Builder tool. It doesn’t need to be a big base, just one that has enough energy and storage to run a fully functional Fabricator.

Once you have this, you will need one Basic Battery (2x Copper and one Acidic Raion Pouch), 2 Titanium Ingots, 2 Lead and one Wiring Kit. The Titanium Ingot is one of the trickier ones, as there are a couple of Ingots you’ll be able to find in some crates around the area, but you’ll want to build a Processor in your base to create these.

Subnautica 2 Angel Comb 05

Now that you have the Resonator, what you are looking for is an Angel Comb. You will get a mission from your Lifepod regarding it, and it will send you around 200 meters to the northwest. Here, you will notice down on the ocean floor, what looks like giant crab/root-like tentacles coming out of the ground. Follow these around the area to find white infections with blue-glowing bulbs. Pop these bulbs and be prepared to be attacked by the infestation that’s defending them.

There will be one in a cave system that's to the south of the Angel Comb, and to the northeast. Try to follow the tendrils that are connected to the Angel Comb. After these are taken down, head to the main Angel Comb and destroy the ones that are now populating this cave system. There will be a nasty predator roaming around, so be prepared to dodge it. Afterward, the membrane will become available for you to put your hand in, gaining the ability to withstand heat.
