The GTA 6 hype is real, and you might be tempted to run straight to the first online retailer you find to snag a preorder and make sure you don't miss out on playing GTA 6 day one. But there is an important detail that many players might overlook that could render their copy of GTA 6 unplayable.

PlayStation 5 GTA 6 codes will be region locked. Rockstar Games has officially confirmed that the physical edition of GTA 6 will not contain a physical disc. It will be empty except for a lonely voucher containing a code. This is a digital download code, and on the PS5, those codes will be tied to specific regions. If your code's region doesn't match the region your PlayStation account is set to, you might not be able to redeem it at all.

PS5 GTA 6 Codes Are Region Locked

When you've spent money on GTA 6 and waited so many years for the release, the last thing you want is an error code telling you that you can't play your game! But that could very well be the reality for many GTA 6 fans. According to Rockstar's official documentation, PS5 download codes must match the region of the PlayStation account they're redeemed on.

For example, North American codes can only be redeemed on eligible North American PlayStation accounts, and UK codes are only intended for UK PlayStation accounts. This could pose massive problems for players who have purchased codes from overseas retailers or who are traveling and secured a copy abroad.

The best path forward would be to purchase your copy from a local retailer in the same PlayStation Store region as your account, or directly from the PlayStation store via your account. That way, you can be sure you're getting the right code for your account, and you can avoid any headaches on release day.

Unfortunately, you cannot change the region of a PlayStation account after it has been created. If you have purchased a code from a different region, you could choose to create a separate PlayStation account set to the region matching your code, just for GTA 6.

And we haven't even gotten into Japanese codes yet. Japanese GTA 6 codes are subject to even more local regulations, the most notable of which is that they come with an expiry date.

If a Japanese GTA 6 code isn't activated within 170 days after the issue date, that product code will expire. That is according to Rockstar's official statement. This statement leaves us with many unanswered questions and doesn't really shed much light on what it actually means. The statement seems clear—the code will expire if it is not redeemed within 170 days.

But what happens if someone misses that deadline? Will Rockstar issue a replacement code? Will retailers be expected to replace expired vouchers? Or will buyers lose the ability to redeem the code altogether? The entire game being nuked after someone has already paid for it (and a decent amount of cash, mind you), just doesn't sit right with many gamers.

Rockstar has yet to comment on this, but has claimed that the expiration date for redeemable codes was instated due to 'regional regulations.' For now, all players can do is make sure they redeem their codes within the 170-day deadline.

Xbox Players Aren't Affected

In a rare win for Xbox, region-locked codes are only tied to the PS5. So if your Xbox has been gathering dust in the corner of your room for the past few years, and you've been put off by Sony's control over games media you've spent your hard-earned money on, it might be time to dust off those cobwebs and switch teams for a while!

Sony is already in the bad books of many gamers following their controversial decision to stop producing PlayStation game discs in 2028. This latest decision has fueled that debate, leading gamers to question whether publishers are already exercising too much control over digital games and what this means for the future of gaming as a whole.
