What is Mortal Shell 2?

Mortal Shell 2 is a dark fantasy RPG that tests the player’s resilience, patience, and skills as they navigate a world called Fallgrim - a dense swamp inhabited by creatures and horrors alike. This Soulslike expands greatly on the original game, and is set to release in full on August 20th, 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Mortal Shell 2 boasts an interconnected semi open world broken down in large sections, with a fluid combat system, and a considerable lore expansion from the previous game.

Story and Setting

Fallgrim has been infiltrated by dark forces, who have stolen away the Undermether’s Ova, and are fueled entirely by their addiction to Tar - a substance that is made from Ova and serves as both a form of currency and something between a drug and an object of worship. Tar is distilled from True Nektar, an essence harvested from the Glands of the Unborn, who are entities brought into existence by the goddess Vatra. The Unborn currently exist as Ova, just as the Harbinger did. Through careful extraction, True Nektar is refined into Tar, each carrying a fragment of its celestial origin.

Tar is believed to be the first step toward transformation into one of the world’s Revered. Devotees offer it in elaborate rites, convinced that communion with its essence brings them closer to ascension. But truly, it is a drug, much like Moon Sugar in Elder Scrolls, and has done more harm than good to the world of Fallgrim.

The player, the Harbinger, is born from an uncorrupted Ovum, and is tasked with saving as many of their siblings as they are able to. The Harbinger is not human, and because of this, needs the physical protection and abilities of mortal ‘Shells’ to navigate Fallgrim. There are many confirmed Shells, all of which function as the game’s classes. The Harbinger must possess mortal Shells and navigate the cursed lands, all in an attempt to dethrone false gods, cleanse a shattered world, and reclaim the corrupted Ova of the Undermether. Per the game’s website, you will “explore a dense, open world filled with dark secrets, strange companions, and loathsome foes.”

Gameplay and Mechanics

Mortal Shell 2 is a thrilling Soulslike experience, with dark aesthetics and terrifying themes. There is no shortage of lore and flavor text, and the combat system has been greatly improved upon since this game’s predecessor. New weapons add a great deal of depth to the way that combat functions, saving players from the repetitive nature of the previous game’s combat. The Harbinger can now skulk about in the shadows and deliver blows from a distance with a wide array of weapons, rather than merely a single Ballistazooka.

The stamina system from the previous game has thankfully met its end, which allows the Harbinger to chain attacks, dodge, and parry without restriction. You can’t, however, cancel attacks, which means that simply smashing buttons and hoping for the best is often punished by enemies. Instead of stamina, Mortal Shell 2 utilizes a ‘posture’ mechanic - providing a bar that tracks how vulnerable an enemy is at any given time.

You can increase an enemy’s stagger damage by successfully parrying or blocking their attacks, which makes them more open to damage and harsh finishers. Special abilities from shells and tarstones also provide some opportunities to deal stagger damage.

While the original Mortal Shell only has four playable Shells in the base game, Mortal Shell 2 has eight playable Shells, each with their own class and unique abilities. My personal favorite is Tiel, an acolyte who is a thieving, rogue-like Shell with the ability to use the shadows to empower his dodges and to attack without being seen; though other options such as melee-focused combat or durability-focused Shells are excellent choices, as well.

Mortal Shell 2 offers a massive variety of enemies, from flying reptiles that spew poison at the Harbinger to the all-familiar Wormfish. Enemies are designed to challenge the player’s timing and abilities. However, Bosses tend to have unique mechanics that require strategizing and using your resources carefully.

Visuals and Thoughts

The original Mortal Shell game had breathtaking graphics, and the sequel absolutely follows in the first game’s footsteps. Mortal Shell 2 uses Unreal Engine 5, which actually plays a significant role in film production, architectural visualization, automotive design, and virtual production. It’s safe to say that Mortal Shell 2's graphics are as intricate as the story itself - the game bringing a hauntingly beautiful dark-fantasy world to life.

Mortal Shell 2 boasts over a dozen riposte takedowns just in the demo alone, and there’s no shortage of gore, creative attacks and visuals, or enemy-maiming. The environments are well-thought-out and plenty detailed, often offering flavor text in new areas and intriguing dialogue from NPCs for an immersive experience.

Final Thoughts

Mortal Shell 2 is set to be released on August 20th, 2026 and is available for pre-purchase at a reasonable $49.99, though if you ‘shell’ out an additional $10 for the Devout Version, you’ll receive up to 72 hours of advanced access to the game. As of right now, the special physical edition is out of stock.

All in all, Mortal Shell 2 is a stark improvement from the original Mortal Shell, and I’m looking forward to playing the game in its entirety. I’m definitely counting down the days until its release and am eagerly awaiting any new morsels that may be dropped in preparation for the feast that Mortal Shell 2 promises to be.
