After a three-year hiatus, one of Jeep’s most important nameplates is back. The nameplate that helped define the modern SUV in the 1980s and 1990s comes back wearing a boxier, upright shape that nods to those earlier models while ditching the polarizing curves of its 2014-2023 predecessor. But by the time it disappeared after 2023, the segment had moved on, leaving Jeep without a direct answer to the Honda CR-V, the Toyota RAV4, or the Subaru Forester.

The 2026 Cherokee arrives as the first model to use Jeep's new hybrid system - a 1.6-liter turbo-four hybrid producing 210 horsepower - but more importantly, it now has the efficiency, cargo space, and standard tech it needed years ago. Jeep is entering a much tougher market than the Cherokee left behind, though. Its rivals are roomier, more established, and already proven with hybrid buyers. The new Cherokee has all the right ingredients, but after three years away, it now has to prove the name still carries weight.

The 2026 Jeep Cherokee is all-new and marks the return of the nameplate after it left the lineup following 2023. It gets a boxier, more upright design, a larger cabin, more cargo space, and a new hybrid powertrain aimed at improving fuel efficiency.

2026 Jeep Cherokee Price: Which One To Buy

The 2026 Jeep Cherokee starts at $35,000, excluding the $1,995 destination charge. The Laredo follows at $38,000, while the Limited starts at $40,000, and the Overland tops the range at $43,000. There is also an 85th Anniversary Edition this year, with a $40,905 MSRP before destination. It is essentially a Laredo-based special edition trim, adding unique anniversary details and a handful of extra comfort, tech, and appearance upgrades. That pricing drops the Cherokee into one of the toughest fights in the segment, because buyers can already get excellent hybrid SUVs from Toyota, Honda, and Subaru without taking a chance on a revived nameplate.

The good news is that, for the money, the new Cherokee no longer feels like too bad a deal. Even the base model comes with the hybrid powertrain, standard 4x4, a 12.3-inch infotainment screen, a 10.25-inch digital cluster, and most of the key driver-assistance features. Still, we would stick with the Laredo, since it offers the best balance of price and equipment at just around $40K. That could change if Jeep announces a Trailhawk later, because that is the trim that would most naturally deliver the extra character this new Cherokee still feels like it is missing.

Interior And Features

The Cherokee’s interior is one of the most important parts of this redesign because the old model had fallen badly behind. Jeep buyers will usually forgive some hard-wearing materials if the vehicle feels purposeful, but they will not ignore cramped packaging, old tech, or a cabin that feels cheaper than the price tag. The 2026 model fixes a lot of that with a cleaner dashboard layout, a larger cockpit, more storage, and a rotary gear selector that frees up space in the center console. Uconnect 5 is generally one of Stellantis’ better systems when it works well, with clear menus, quick responses, and standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Every Cherokee comes standard with a 10.25-inch full-color digital cluster and a 12.3-inch Uconnect 5 touchscreen, which is a major step up from the old Cherokees. Better yet, Jeep has not gone fully buttonless, but it also has not kept the kind of simple physical climate controls we would prefer, as some HVAC functions use touch-capacitive controls instead. That is a little annoying in a vehicle meant to be used on the move, even if the overall layout is much cleaner than before.

Space

The 2026 Cherokee seats five, and on paper, it is larger than the previous Cherokee. Front legroom is listed at 41.3 inches, while rear legroom comes in at 38.5 inches. That gives the Cherokee enough room for adults in both rows, although it is not quite as generous in the back as the Honda CR-V, which remains one of the segment’s space champions with 41.0 inches of rear legroom.

Cargo

Cargo space is one of the clearest improvements on the 2026 Cherokee. Jeep says the new model offers 30% more cargo capacity than the previous Cherokee, which is a major upgrade for anyone who found the old one too tight for family duty. The new Cherokee offers 33.6 cubic feet of space behind the second row and 68.3 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. The numbers still do not beat the Honda CR-V and the Toyota RAV4, but for most buyers, the difference between 33.6 and 37.8 cubic feet will not be a dealbreaker, especially since the Cherokee’s boxier shape should make the cargo area easier to use. The Limited trim can also add a hands-free power liftgate, while the feature comes standard on the Overland.

Cabin storage is also better than before, with a rotary gear selector freeing up space in the center console. Every 2026 Cherokee gets a full-length front console with a concealable storage bin, an armrest storage bin, front cupholders, a glove box, a passenger-side seatback map pocket, and rear armrest cupholders, while Limited and Overland trims also get a wireless charging pad.

Materials And Colors

A Global Black interior motif is standard on the 2026 Jeep Cherokee, while the lighter Arctic interior is optional on Laredo, Limited, and Overland trims. The base Cherokee comes with Black Ghoul cloth seats, while the Laredo gets Soul cloth seats with Labyrinth embossing. The Limited upgrades to perforated Capri leatherette seats, and the 85th Anniversary Edition also uses perforated Capri leatherette upholstery with its own special-edition detailing.

The Overland gets uniquely perforated Capri leatherette seats, giving it the most distinct cabin treatment in the lineup. Jeep is also using non-leather materials and recycled carpeting in the new Cherokee, but this is still a mainstream SUV cabin rather than a luxury one. Hard plastics are still visible in some areas, though the cleaner layout, larger screens, and available lighter interior help the cabin look more modern than before.

Features And Infotainment

Every 2026 Jeep Cherokee comes with a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a 12.3-inch Uconnect 5 touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, dual-zone automatic climate control, front USB-C ports, and a six-speaker audio system. Jeep’s Connect One package is also standard, adding a 10-year trial for over-the-air updates, remote vehicle functions through the Jeep app, and automatic SOS calls. The base Cherokee has a six-way manual driver’s seat and a four-way manual front passenger seat. The Laredo adds an eight-way power driver’s seat with two-way lumbar adjustment, heated front seats, remote start, and rear USB-C charge ports. The 85th Anniversary Edition is based on the Laredo but adds navigation, upgraded audio, a hands-free power liftgate, and a heated steering wheel.

The Limited adds a power front passenger seat, a wireless charging pad, a power liftgate, and a heated steering wheel. Its available Tech Group adds navigation, HD Radio, Alexa Built-In, Off-Road Information Pages, premium Alpine audio, a hands-free power liftgate, and traffic-sign information. The Overland makes most of the Limited’s Tech Group features standard, including navigation, premium Alpine audio, Alexa Built-In, Off-Road Information Pages, the hands-free power liftgate, and the dual-pane panoramic sunroof. It also adds driver memory for the seat, mirrors, radio, and climate settings. The Overland’s available Advanced Pro Tech Group adds ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a digital rearview mirror, a 360-degree camera, windshield wiper de-icer, and automated parking assistance.

Performance

All four trims use the same new 1.6-liter turbo-four hybrid powertrain, producing 210 horsepower and 230 lb-ft of torque. It pairs a gas engine with two electric motors and a battery, and it also marks the debut of Jeep’s new hybrid system and Stellantis’ first 1.6-liter hybrid application in North America. Independent testing shows a 0-60 mph time of 8.1-8.3 seconds and a top speed of 115 mph. Every trim also comes with Jeep Active Drive I 4x4, including a rear-axle disconnect to improve efficiency when extra traction is not needed.

The Cherokee also gets eight inches of ground clearance, a 19.6-degree approach angle, a 29.4-degree departure angle, an 18.8-degree breakover angle, and a 3,500-pound towing capacity.

Test Drive Feedback

CarBuzz drove the 2026 Jeep Cherokee in California and came away with a mostly positive impression of how the new hybrid setup behaves in the real world. It is not especially playful, but it is composed, secure, and more refined than expected for a hybrid crossover. The steering has decent weight, the body stays controlled in corners, and the chassis feels solid over rough pavement rather than loose or floaty.

The hybrid system can get noisy when pushed or on long downhill sections, but the overall driving impression is still positive. More than anything, the Cherokee feels stable and confidence-inspiring, which matters far more here than outright excitement.

Fuel Efficiency

Fuel economy may be the Cherokee’s biggest improvement, because Jeep has not always had a strong answer in this part of the market. EPA estimates put the 2026 Jeep Cherokee at 39/35/37 mpg city/highway/combined, with 507 miles of range from its 13.7-gallon fuel tank. The Cherokee’s efficiency figures also look stronger because 4x4 is standard. Many rivals post their best fuel economy numbers in front-wheel-drive or lower-output versions, then give some of that back once all-wheel drive is added.

Safety

NHTSA and IIHS have not rated the 2026 Jeep Cherokee yet, but the standard safety list is strong. Every trim gets the main driver-assistance features, while higher trims add more camera and parking tech.

Neither NHTSA nor IIHS has published crash-test ratings for the redesigned 2026 Jeep Cherokee yet. The previous Cherokee was rated by IIHS, but those results apply to the 2019-2023 model and do not carry over to the new hybrid Cherokee.

Every 2026 Jeep Cherokee comes standard with seven airbags, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, adaptive cruise control, active driving assist, lane management, intersection collision assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-path detection, drowsy-driver detection, a rearview camera, rear parking sensors with stop, hill start assist, traction control, electronic roll mitigation, trailer sway damping, tire-pressure monitoring, child-seat LATCH anchors, and a rear-seat reminder. Traffic sign information is optional on the Limited and standard on the Overland. Limited and Overland trims can also add blind-spot monitoring with trailer detection and trailer hitch zoom. The Overland adds front/rear parking sensors and side-distance warning, and it is the only trim available with a 360-degree camera, automated parking, and front/rear camera washers.

Reliability

The 2026 Cherokee is too new for meaningful long-term reliability data. It is an all-new generation with a new hybrid powertrain for Jeep, so there are no J.D. Power ratings yet. There is already one recall involving a small number of 2026 Cherokee models equipped with a trailer-tow module. In this case, 57 vehicles were potentially affected, and the issue could cause a loss of trailer lighting.

The 2026 Jeep Cherokee comes with a three-year/36,000-mile basic limited warranty and a five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty. It also includes five years/60,000 miles of roadside assistance and five years/unlimited miles of corrosion-perforation coverage. Because the Cherokee is a hybrid, its traction battery is covered for eight years or 100,000 miles.

Design

The previous generation had capability, but its design was polarizing in a way that never fully aged into charm. This new model goes back to a boxier, more upright shape, and that alone gives it a stronger identity. It draws on 50 years of Cherokee history, which shows in the sharper edges, taller stance, and clearer link to older models. Up front, the new Cherokee gets a cleaner and more confident face, with squared-off LED headlights, U-shaped daytime running light accents, and the familiar seven-slot grille still anchoring the whole look. From the side, the biggest change is the profile itself. It is straighter, more upright, and less softened than before, which gives the Cherokee a more traditional SUV shape and a stronger presence. Around the back, the rear design leans into Jeep's heritage with jerry-can-inspired taillights, which is a small but clever touch that helps separate it from the anonymous hybrid crossover crowd.

For the regular 2026 Jeep Cherokee lineup, the base Cherokee, Laredo, and Limited come with 18-inch machined-face painted aluminum wheels and 225/60R18 all-season tires. The Overland upgrades to 20-inch machined-face painted aluminum wheels with 235/50R20XL all-season performance tires. Paint choices include Bright White, ’41, Diamond Black Crystal Pearl, Hydro Blue Pearl, Red Hot Pearl, Silver Zynith, and Sting-Gray. Bright White is the no-cost color, while the other colors are extra-cost options. Two-Tone Paint options are exclusive to the Overland. The 85th Anniversary Edition gets unique 20-inch wheels and three limited exterior paint colors: Bright White, Diamond Black Crystal Pearl, and Silver Zynith.

Verdict: Is The 2026 Jeep Cherokee A Good SUV?

After years of feeling like an afterthought, the Cherokee is back as a solid option with fewer obvious trade-offs than before. For years, buying some Jeep models meant accepting worse fuel economy, less space, or older tech because you liked the badge and the image. This Cherokee does not ask for as many excuses. It brings hybrid efficiency, more cargo room, and a strong list of standard tech. But the one thing that may keep it from reaching the top spot is its price. It costs more than the CR-V Hybrid and RAV4 Hybrid, yet both rivals beat it on fuel efficiency and space, which is what this segment is all about. The missing Trailhawk is disappointing, and buyers looking for the most spacious or most proven hybrid SUV may still land elsewhere. Even so, this is the first Cherokee in years that feels easy to recommend, even if it may not lead the class.
