This is the worst day of my life. "Joshua, you're just being dramatic." Shut up, I'm crying in da clerb or whatever it is you cool kids say. Where I really want to be crying is in Goodsprings in Fallout: New Vegas, where I, a courier, have been shot in the head before beginning a quest for vengeance that takes me across the Mojave Wasteland. Like many fans, I seriously hoped Fallout Season 2 would lead to some kind of Fallout game remaster, but my fingers were and have been crossed for New Vegas. The latest rumors and leaks are breaking my heart all over again.

There's no doubt that Bethesda's Fallout games are a pillar of the RPG world, standing alongside The Elder Scrolls games, and few games have come close to Bethesda's dominance in the realm. It'll be interesting to see what the next few years look like, but if leaks are true, then we'll be getting remasters/remakes/recreations of Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas. My problem is the purported order.

Fallout: New Vegas Designer Comments on the Possibility of a Remaster

Fallout: New Vegas designer and Obsidian Entertainment co-founder Chris Avellone weighs in on the potential of the game getting a remaster.

Fallout 3 Before Fallout: New Vegas Would Make Me Go Mad

Recently, Jez Corden of Windows Central discussed the release pipeline of these rumored Fallout remasters during an episode of the Xbox Two Podcast (around the 02:02:13 mark). Corden explained that the Fallout remasters are probably further off than people think, saying that he wouldn't expect either remaster until 2027 at the earliest. Based on general Fallout leaks and other suggestions, it would seem that the title would be Fallout 3 instead of Fallout: New Vegas, which is at the heart of my personal, devastating issue, but it gets even worse, bro (gender neutral).

Corden also discussed what he's heard about the next Elder Scrolls game, which he estimates/thinks/speculates would come a year or two after the first Fallout remaster, and it logically follows that the second Fallout remaster could come some time after that. For what Corden said, it's worth highlighting that his claims are assumptions based on leaks and not leaks themselves, which might be my only saving grace, but the release pipeline may look something like Fallout 3 in 2027, The Elder Scrolls 6 in 2028-2029, and Fallout: New Vegas in 2029-2030. Not only do I not get New Vegas first, but there could also possibly be years between the two remasters.

And as the best Fallout game in the franchise and one of the greatest RPGs of all time, it should be Fallout: New Vegas in that 2027 slot. If they were months apart, I would be less sour. If they were released closely together, I would be less sour. But Bethesda expects me to survive to 2029 or 2030, in this economy, to re-experience peak Fallout? "Joshua, Fallout 3 did come out first. This approach makes logical sense." Shut up, I travel through Quarry Junction to face Deathclaws and feel alive—logic does not help me, right now, when I am vulnerable, exposed, and emotional. And if we really want to follow release order instead of best Fallout game order (at least for Bethesda-era Fallout games), then we should at least ensure both products are closer—something like Fallout 3 in 2027, Fallout: New Vegas in 2027/2028, and The Elder Scrolls 6 in 2028/2029 is better! We've waited this long for The Elder Scrolls 6, just tack on more years, it's okay.

Don't even get me started on Fallout 5...

Best Bethesda-Era Fallout Game Order (For Reference)

  • Fallout: New Vegas
    • Yes, this was developed by Obsidian Entertainment, but it's post-acquisition of the IP by Bethesda and ergo part of the Bethesda Era
  • Fallout 76
    • If you can handle Bethesda jank, Fallout 76 is much better in 2026 than it was at launch
  • Fallout 3
  • Fallout 4

Am I going to play the purported Fallout 3 remaster and explore the Capital Wasteland whenever, if ever, it arrives? Sure. But I'm going to be pouty about it. Am I going to wish it were Fallout: New Vegas the entire time? You bet I am. Do I understand why it's this way and am, at least, somewhat facetious about how upset I am? Yeah. But goodness, with all the ongoing Fallout rumors and leaks, even thinking that a New Vegas remaster could possibly be something like 4 years away is roughhhhhhh.
